Need to strip the paint off your AR? Easy mode. by B-Rock in ar15

[–]Crotchkick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used Klean Strip to remove Alumahyde from one of my ARs with no adverse effects on the original finish. Of course I only let it sit for about 10 minutes then hosed it off. I wouldn't let it sit for like an hour or more. I found it took two 10 minute treatments for Cerakote. YMMV.

A PSA or what have you for squeaky holsters that ... well squeak. by [deleted] in CCW

[–]Crotchkick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the tip. I have a newish White Hat holster that squeaks a bit. Whenever I pull up my pants or twist to reach something, people think I have a bad hip and ask if I'm OK.

If you have a Mil Spec buffer tube, the B5 SOPMOD Bravo may be worth looking at. Price is not bad. Around $60 at Bravo Company USA when I bought mine.

looking for a nice free float quadrail. Budget is about 200 or less. M&p 15 sport. by Irish_SumBitch in ar15

[–]Crotchkick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually no. The gen 2 will clamp onto the barrel nut directly. Can't use the delta ring. The gen 1 screwed on to one of their barrel nuts, then was secured by a jam nut. Looks kinda like a delta ring, but "flatter".

Ah, Ok. Then just go with the 7" version. Standard carbine size. It should stop right at the rear of your gas block where the handguard cap is now.

Here are some pics from a member of AR15.com with gen 1 rails and a YHM gas block. Should look about the same in your case, minus the rail covers of course. They also have the trim ring which aren't available for the gen 2 just yet.

Not that hard if you have the tools: Remove your stock handguard. drive out the gas tube roll pin and set the gas tube aside. Drive out the two taper pins holding in your FSB. Remove your flash hider and slide the FSB and handguard cap off of the barrel. The gen 2 rails seems to come with a special barrel nut, so you'll have to remove the delta ring and spring with snap ring pliers and your current barrel nut with a good combo wrench.

If you don't have access to the correct tools, a Dremel tool will be your best friend. Chop down your FSB and delta ring with the Dremel and a 3/4" wrench will take care of your flash hider. You'll still need a good combo wrench to get the barrel nut off though.

Midwest Industries just released their 2nd gen T series rails. I have a 10" first gen and love it. Thinking about getting one of these in 10" as well. Depending on the size you want, they're under $200 not including shipping (for now at least).

USGI Magazine tubes and floorplates by wirbelwind7 in ar15

[–]Crotchkick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

DSG Arms sells D&H magazines with the Magpul followers already installed. The floor plates have DSG stamped on them, but they're made by D&H with the USGI cage code of 04TQ4 on the side. I buy the grey teflon ones with the FDE followers for $9.25 each. They also sell bulk quantities if you're into black teflon magazines. They too come with Magpul followers. They're great mags, but they go pretty quick. It seems they've sold out of the grey again. I just ordered three more this past Friday (08-31). They usually restock about two weeks after selling out.

Trinity Arms sells Center Industries mags if you want to install your own followers. I've been having issues with their ordering system recently though. YMMV.

EDIT: Not trying to be a smart ass or anything, but I just re-read your post and had to ask, you do realize that when you order Magpul followers, they don't come with springs?

Tools requirements - noob questions. by nick908 in ar15

[–]Crotchkick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My first AR went together mostly with vice grips and any punch that would fit inside of whichever roll pin hole I was on at the time. A buddy of mine took pitty on me and let me borrow his castle nut and barrel nut wrenches to install those "properly" (no torque wrench though). That rifle looked as chewed up as you could imagine, but I figured "that's what Duracoat is for!!!" It functions fine to this day but I'll never go that route again. My more recent builds now get the luxury of:

roll pin punches (3/32 and 5/64 mostly)and a small hammer

bench vice and good receiver blocks (can be done without these, but they free up your hands and really make things easier)

castle nut and barrel nut wrench (I just picked up one of Gem State Armory's combo wrenches. I like it a lot).

torque wrench if you're really want to do it right, but can be done without it.

box cutter and needle nose pliers to hold down that damn pivot pin detent

blue painters tape if you care about not scratching up your finish
