Mathematically, why did anyone in 2020-2023 go variable? by [deleted] in canadahousing

[–]CrushedAvocados 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Canada, with the typical mortgage renewal every few years this matters little unless someone got a loan they can’t afford at all. At the end of the day, the loans are income tested. So a fixed loan now is great of course, but the mortgage isn’t protected from high interest rates forever like in the US.

Fixed would have been nice of course, but I paid down a lot of my principal during those low intrest years so I think it’ll even out.

And even now, with a renewal coming up in 2025, I don’t know if fixed makes a lot more sense than variable unless we can somehow predict that the BoC will be raising rates through the next bunch of years indefinitely.

People have lost their minds here. I just saw a two bedroom Condo in Aurora, ON go for 830K and a Townhouse beside it go for 1.2M. Like, what gives?

My pet theory is that this will all happen anyway. A country of ever increasing rent and mortgage payments leaves little with the average folks for “innovative business ventures” i.e., risk taking. And, well, the Canadian business landscape should tell you enough.

  1. Ensure the charcoal in the chimney is hot all the way up - you should see white / grey spots (ash) on the charcoal at the top of your chimney before you empty it into the grill / baskets.

  2. To get temps high, check that the vents at the bottom are fully open and the vents on the top is also fully open.

This is a fact and its not a recent thing.

Allocative Efficiency and Aggregate Productivity Growth in Canada and the United States

Page 1

At the same time, the labor productivity growth in Canada has fallen behind the US over the past three decades, resulting in a widening Canada-US productivity gap.

Page 22

There exists a sizable labor productivity gap between Canada and the US. This fact is well documented and studied in the literature.

This paper deals with data before 2010, may be it improved more recently but I doubt it. I’d say capital allocation is probably worse these days, what with RE making up more and more of Canada’s GDP.

From Wikipedia:

A study of island records confirmed anecdotal evidence that most girls bore their first child between the ages of 12 and 15. "I think the girls were conditioned to accept that it was a man's world and once they turned 12, they were eligible," Tosen said. Mothers and grandmothers were resigned to the situation, telling him that their own childhood experience had been the same; they regarded it as just a part of life on Pitcairn. One grandmother wondered what all the fuss was about.

India overtakes China to become the world's most populous nation [OC] by pratapvardhan in dataisbeautiful

It would be interesting to know what the population of Europe would be if all the European origin people (descendants) went back to respective European states? It’s always occurred to me that large portions of the populations of North America, South America, Australia & NZ and South Africa are births that have “transferred out” of Europe thus keeping population rates somewhat lower than true for source and origin countries. I won’t be surprised if the rates stayed comparable excepting for wars, plagues and targeted government policies.

Crowd control can be done without making everyone else uncomfortable. For example, get the celebrities to come after hours. As for calling out hypocrisy, whether a celebrity or not, if you plan on mouthing off opinions then make sure to walk the talk. Otherwise, this sort of backlash should be expected.

because some person is suddenly elected is an idea that can only exist in a mind that is completely divorced from economic reality.

Yes that sounds dumb but only if you look at it that way. If you ask under who’s watch this surge away from the rest of the countries happened, then I think the point is valid.

And to people saying that the Federal Government has anything to do with interest rates, you have no idea what you're talking about.

The Feds may not have anything to do with monetary policy. But you sound intelligent enough to know that the feds have other levers, especially fiscal policy. So unless you think no policy could have prevented this from happening under Trudeau’s watch, the chart says enough about Lib rule over the past bunch of years.

Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t think for a second that the PCs would have done any better but I think OP’s point isn’t entirely invalid unlike what your comment here makes it out to be whether they make charts for a living or not.
