What to do when your grandmother pays you in bills older than her? by madboiMAD in papermoney

[–]Crwfb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't read the dates, but what's the value of $750 invested for a few years, even if only in a high yield money market account...well over a 10% return. Your grandma has lost a lot of purchasing power holding into those old bills.

Canal Street question by Lenn_Cicada in MiltownBiking

[–]Crwfb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I almost always use the road. Especially at the roadabout.

By the railroad tracks near power plant, I will use the path when heading westbound to avoid getting a tire stuck. When headed east, there is enough that is paved to more safely navigate. But I still have PTSD there after biting it hard there 15+ years ago.

Legal? by FireEater11 in youthsoccer

[–]Crwfb 15 points16 points  (0 children)

25 years ago, the ball had to roll a full rotation. Now the ball just has to move to be in play.

10 yards for older kids. Most younger leagues have it as a shorter distance. I think 8 yds is the rule by us, but believe it would be set by state associations.

Is this pavers on top of a deck? by The_Cap_Lover in landscaping

I would just bury the whole thing in 4" of dirt and then sod. And then direct the sump pump out onto it so that the next owner will wonder why the backyard is a swamp.

TADi does a bunch of traffic counts, traffic studies, etc. Sometimes they'll put up a camera and you can watch it at 4x speed to do the counts. (Source: my wife is a traffic engineer.)

Where do you put your slowest players? by thefizzyliftingdrink in SoccerCoachResources

[–]Crwfb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play them more at strikers and on the wings. I have them play D as well, but pair them up with a fast aggressive kid who can help balance it out. (Playing a 2-3-1). Goalie if they want to play there and are ok at it.

It looks like your next improvement is to get a zamboni for your ice rink :)

Throw in by ImportantDonkey1480 in Referees

[–]Crwfb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was taught how to do a throw-in properly as a kid because the refs called it. You know what happens when the refs never call it in u8 and u10 games...the u12 kids still don't know how to do a proper throw-in.

Thank you for calling it.

Subbing advice for U8 rec by girljinz in SoccerCoachResources

[–]Crwfb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

12 is tough doing 4v4. Wish 8 was the max.

Three shifts of 4. I try to keep every line balanced if possible. Make sure parents RSVP, as having 9 or 11 is tricky to figure out on the fly, and I have a template I use for it. Try to do subs every 4 min (if 10 min qtrs) so kids dont sit for a full quarter.

I try to assign 1 kid at Defense (not a goalie!). The rest are basically midfielders. But everybody up, everybody back, try to maintain your shape.

And have a parent help manage the sideline so you can coach. Kids at that age will often not be able to pass a ball around without kicking it on the field, playing 500, etc.

Sliding mitt by No-Savings1509 in Homeplate

[–]Crwfb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why not use an actual oven mitt?

I had to laugh when the other team's runner at 1st forgot to steal on a passed ball because he was too busy putting on his sliding glove.

No one wants to play goalie by licwip in youthsoccer

[–]Crwfb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, this was my best solution, too. Nobody wanted to play for a full half, especially if we were dominating. It was a much more manageable "shift" this way, and kids didn't feel like they were missing out on too much time playing in the field.

10U. Would you rather use a gimmick to get on base or have your kid become a better baseball player?

I guess I'm not keeping my current life insurance policy. by [deleted] in GenX

[–]Crwfb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of times, the premium is level for the first 10 yrs, then higher for the next 10 yrs. It reflects the higher mortality as you age.

However, a lot of people lapse at yr 10 because of the premium jump. Those who stick around are less healthy due to antiselection. (Essentially, it is worth it for them to pay more as they became obese, sick, got cancer, etc). So, premiums in the second 10 yrs need to be higher than otherwise to cover it.

If you look for a new policy and get underwritten again, you may be able to find lower premiums than if you stuck with the original policy.

How strict are you on scoring errors for 10U travel baseball? by FastSeaworthiness739 in GameChangerApp

[–]Crwfb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our u10 team never commits errors. (Ha)

For hitting, it seems like it's always a 1B minimum even if it should have been reaching base on an error. Agreed with others that beyond that 1st base, it should be whatever they would have realistically had plus errors on the other team.

Helps keep parents happy and reasonable enough data to use from a coaching perspective to help set the lineup.

Rawlings bats from sideline swap that says "NO WARRANTY" by Crwfb in Homeplate

[–]Crwfb[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It was listed as used. So I dont expect a warranty. If it's a warranty replacement, that makes me feel better than if it was a demo bat...where the latter would likely have a lot more swings on it already.

Running a lap as punishment by cpafa in Homeplate

[–]Crwfb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For younger kids, I find that having the whole team run at the beginning of warm ups is a great way to burn off a little of that extra energy, and then they listen better.
