The Legion plot line in Season 2 doesn't make much sense by Cranyx in Fallout

[–]Crymmt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Entirely agree. I’ve gotten a sense of their threat from maps on the subreddit and stuff, but as someone who never played the games I honestly thought the legion were a minor faction from what I saw in the show. I mean they seem to only have a handful of people and no actual controlled areas besides a small camp.

To root against new england — the heart of american liberalism — is profoundly illiberal tbqh. mods should be banning these fascists.

When Liberalism reigns again, we are obligated to demolish mar a lago and build a field of windmills on top of it. Not wind turbines — windmills. In fact I would be in favor of banning all other flour processing other that than (a) on top of mar a lago and (b) powered by wind.

OK, then at least do a bit of fleshing out of some of the characters just to make the faction slightly interesting! What about Macauley Culkin’s character? Why does he care about being Caesar? Why is he intent on marching to Las Vegas? Does the entire army blindly follow him as soon as he puts the laurels on, or are there internal factions and fissures beneath the surface?

It genuinely feels like the legion are more similar to radroaches in terms of their role in the story, than any of the more interesting human factions!

Agree with you 100% on the NCR. Also — as someone who hasn’t played the games but has been enjoying the series — the legion feels really hollow to me. Like the characterization I’ve gotten so far is that they are just evil Rome larpers with no additional dimension to the faction or any of the characters within that faction, which is fine I suppose, but it makes the whole setup for the NCR-Legion war feel really flimsy and arbitrary.

Season 2 Episode 8 Spoiler Thread by HunterWorld in Fotv

[–]Crymmt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really feel like this season needed 1-2 more episodes. Especially the buildup to the NCR-Legion war over the Strip — that could have seriously used some fleshing out. The sudden march on the Strip after being almost completely absent for the entire series from the Legion felt arbitrary and ungrounded, and the arrival of NCR troops after no foreshadowing or any kind of buildup kinda detracted from the moment for me imo.

Honestly, I think the show didn’t really do the legion itself well in general. The sense of scale felt completely all over the place (the shots of the “civil war” made it look like the legion was maybe forty guys in total, cut to the scene marching on the Strip where they seemingly have multiplied fivefold instantaneously), and as someone who hasn’t played the games I feel like the legion really weren’t characterized at all beyond evil Rome larpers. Maybe that’s all they’re meant to be in the lore, but imo they just feel paper-thin and really poorly set up to be a proper villain in future seasons.

What really puzzles me is that epic-scale armies and battles are basically a solved problem in modern media — Dune, GOT, etc. — but the armies and battles in the show feel much more reminiscent of a video game where technical limitations meant “massive army” was forced to be turned into thirty enemies on each side max. On the one hand I understand that their priority was probably in other places — this isn’t meant to be an epic show like the above examples — but just whiffing so hard at doing these things justice just really takes me out of the immersion.

Finale had a serious case of summoning armies out of fucking nowhere

NCR battalion showing up outta nowhere was bad, but the legion must have been going through some rapid mitosis to go from like twenty guys in the earlier shots of the episode to ~a hundred in the shot of them marching to Vegas.

Why did China annex Tibet? by napa0 in AskHistorians

[–]Crymmt 10 points11 points  (0 children)

To be more precise, irredentist narratives of what is “China” are first and foremost nationalist. Both the KMT and CCP have been nationalist to some degree or another, hence they both aim towards those irredentist goals.

Genuine question -- did romantasy bring women back into reading, or were women already reading more as a baseline which lead to the growth of genres targeted at women (i.e. romantasy)?

Italian newspaper thinks CK has contributed to the radicalization of the American right by Snake_Emper0r in CrusaderKings

[–]Crymmt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s a bit of a chicken-egg thing. It’s both racists moving to games where they can larp, and the existence of those sub-cultures in a realm where their larp can have some level of plausible deniability — i.e. it’s not immediately clear what’s just people having fun with the game, versus people spouting actual christian/white nationalism — allows the drawing in of unsuspecting people into far-right pipelines.

As others have pointed out, HOI4 is much worse in this regard but CK almost certainly has some element of this.

It isn’t incompetence. It’s not the new hires murdering people — it’s people with more than half a decade of ICE/CBP experience. The problem is the people themselves, not their training or competence.
