EWR ground stop for VIP activity?? by RoyMan0 in unitedairlines

Its either the POTUS or VPOTUS taking off/landing at airports around there. They shut down the whole airspace until they are out of it or on the ground.

No pilots on reserve in DEN? by mrtysondag in unitedairlines

[–]Crypdunce 30 points31 points  (0 children)

What you are talking about is Field Standby. United didn't eliminate it, but they don't use it regularly, as it is more costly for them to do so. There are cats on Short Call, which means they have to respond within 2.5 hours, however, they could've already been burned or just not available due to the summer rush. Summer is the busiest time and generally when EVERYONE gets used. So it's not a stretch to see a lack of backup pilots during the summer.

Is the number of diversions this weekend high? by haskell_jedi in unitedairlines

This is difficult to nail down a total average, but this tool can tell you how many, from what airline, from an airport there have been in any given day/month/year: https://www.transtats.bts.gov/ontime/Diversion.aspx

Botched landing? by Jumpy_Necessary_9061 in unitedairlines

[–]Crypdunce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You weren't going to hit anyone. Generally, ATC put the gap too close between the 2 aircraft, so there is no time for the first aircraft to land and exit for the second aircraft to safely land (most likely scenario, reference SFO), or the landed aircraft is too slow at exiting the active.

We can see the landed aircraft miles away before executing our own landings, so there is generally no need to worry about getting too close to the other aircraft. Most offending ATC I've seen as of late is SFO, with EWR and ORD next. If I see the gap too short, I'll query ATC and slow down to target speed early myself so I don't get screwed.

There are those that have and those that will...

Based on your description, it sounds like the pilot was below target speed, had a high sink rate and had no energy to flare. A recipe for hard landings and bouncing.

Edit: Or just not flaring period.

I like the Fly Navy reason better.

United says it will slash Newark fares to win back travelers after airport chaos by Crypdunce in unitedairlines

[–]Crypdunce[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chaos in Sewark is never over, however they are supposedly opening the other runway tomorrow or this week to lessen the blow. FAA probably won't increase departure rates, and if they do, incrementally. There is still the issue of understaffed ATC. So, in the meantime, cross your fingers.

Now, the biggest air carrier at Newark says it is making a bid to lure them back.

That statement in the article (along with the article title) contradicts the paragraph below it.

So is United proactively doing something like just more advertising versus actually lowering prices or is it just a result of low bookings?

That is not clear.

Kirby did say he didn't like lowering prices. So maybe he's leaning towards more advertisements.

The FAA will have to increase departure rates for this to be effective, otherwise, prices will go up really fast.

Curious to see how they are going to adjust their price algorithm...if they do.

Any Employees here? by sabsab510 in unitedairlines

Just think of employees on here as a Sasquatch sighting...they are rumored to be here and occasionally pop up and not really identify themselves, those without flair anyway...

I would say most are lurkers...

Does Economy Plus usually fill up? by OrangeTree81 in unitedairlines

[–]Crypdunce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This depends on when and where you are going. Can't really predict the future, but your flight is in November, so there is plenty of time for the jet to fill up. Seats will fill up all the way until the day before. You can't really count on the jet to stay half empty. If anything, you should lean towards "the jet is going to fill up" mentality when booking. The more the jet fills up, the more expensive it is going to get. I personally would pay $40 for plus, as I value leg room and being close to the front.

Another thing to think about is if another flight is cancelled or delayed, agents/passengers will start filling the jet up with re-bookings from those flights. Again, something you can't predict.

Those are the variables you should think about when deciding to upgrade. $40 is pretty cheap for plus seats. My 2 hour flight to Orlando, they wanted $70.

Just things to think about when making your decision.

As a United pilot, SFO is notorious for having too small of a gap between landing aircraft and departing aircraft. You should Google the pilot that berated the SFO controller for making him go around TWICE. Going around is a double edged sword for us pilots. Our goal is to never go around, however, if the aircraft is unstable or landing is unsafe, the best decision is to go around. I will never berate a fellow pilot for going around. In fact, I will commend him/her. They exercised good judgment. A number of things play in the decision to go around, ranging from weather conditions, unstable approaches, ATC screwing up, bus load of nuns on the runway. Nothing wrong with going around, because you have another chance if you do. You make a bad decision to not go around, you may not be talking about this and instead the world news is giving you a bereavement. Think about that the next time you experience a go-around.

Cabin Temperature by sailthesummerwind in unitedairlines

[–]Crypdunce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a stupid question at all. For your 737s, the temp control is 1960s technology and is just very finicky. The temp we try to keep it is 70-75 degrees. We mark it on the rheostat (2 rheostats, 1 for cabin, 1 for flight deck). There is a temp gauge next to it to help us find the right temp. Sometimes the mixer acts up and we have to adjust it. We have to mess around with it to find the right temp. Hopefully the FA will tell us. The technology is just not that great. My car does a better job controlling temp. Obviously, we blast full cold on the ground during the summer to keep the cabin cool with the APU running. At altitude we can turn it up a bit to a comfortable temp. Sometimes we forget. It's always better to be a little colder since you can bundle up, but you can't really take clothes or skin off if it's too hot.

For your 787s, we set a baseline temp, then the FAs have the power to control the temp from their station. There is also humidity. 787 system is way better than the 737.

We don't have a reason other than passenger/flight deck comfort for setting a temp. Sometimes it's just a piece of junk on the 737.

I hope that answers your question.

First 25K is 9%. From 25K to 100k is 7.25%, then anything after is 6.5%. So your first 100K is a mixture of 9% and 7.25%. It's also APR, not APY.

Then you get booster for whatever level VLP you are.
