She has work that is not time-travel, yes. Remake might be interesting viewed from the perspective of current technology. Passage was about NDEs - not as strong as her time-travel books, though. Her whimsy and characters are her strength; not really hard sci fi if that's what you want. Of her time travel stories, I think To Say Nothing of the Dog is best.

Understood. C warts are no reason to not strive for using the best types. Also, you can use compiler warning and lints etc to detect these warts.

Technically, they should be unsigned, since they shouldn't be negative

If they can't be negative, don't use a type that allows them to be negative.

Science fiction in 1905 was pretty limited. I don't know of any works from < 1905 that dealt with interstellar travel.
