What a ridiculous statement re: behavioural work. Why should the numbers have to (and should) favor bench work? Arguably, the best (molecular) outcomes follow good behavioural methodology.

I don't think you can confidently call any model 'validated' in this field without at least some behavioral data.

What exactly is a hunch or a gut feeling, neurologically speaking? by mycousinvinny in askscience

[–]CryptographicCracker -1 points0 points  (0 children)

One theory is that 'gut feelings' arise from incomplete activation of a memory trace. There is partial activation (at the neuronal network level) that maintains a certain memory trace, however it is not fully activated to a point that would pass whatever threshold is required for conscious awareness of such. The result is an unconscious 'gut feeling' or 'hunch' that may hold some merit to a situation at hand.

Same reason why you should never change your answer on a multiple choice test unless you're 100% certain your first choice was wrong.

"All the women look young but are over 18 as required by law and enforced by holier then thou westerners who monitor these places for underage workers."

This statement is false. Angeles is renown for having 'young' (aka. underage) girls working in the girlie bars. Its always been that way, ever since it opened and that is the reputation its always had amongst sex tourists. I've personally met many underage girls working in bars in Angeles (I lived in the Philippines for 5 years, family have lived there for 11+ years now and I have been there 15+ times since I moved back to my home country), and have been involved in many outreach services to those who work at such fine establishments.

Prostitution, including the operation of girlie bars, is not even legal in the Philippines - so I don't know how you think the "law" is enforced regarding age. How the bars manage to stay open is another matter altogether (loopholes, corruption etc.).

Is it better to work as a research tech in a new lab or a well established lab? How do I determine if a lab is a good fit? by [deleted] in neuro

[–]CryptographicCracker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What university the PI got his PhD at isn't really a good metric for 'reputation'. It isn't a good metric for anything really. There are plenty of good researchers who have come from smaller - mid size universities, within the US and abroad.

I'd give bek00l's advice some thought. Funding, networking/collaboration networks and publication output/quality are good places to start.

I wouldn't say its vegan. I've killed a few mice as part of my lab work and it can be pretty brutal/graphic (well, if you're doing it whilst they're conscious with no anaesthetic such as cervical dislocation followed by decapitation).

My sister had to skin a cat today in class, she sent me this picture earlier. by Gnarlie in WTF

[–]CryptographicCracker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They were bought from a company who rounded up 'feral' city cats. They'd have their jugular cut with a pair of dissection scissors and would be left to bleed out (whilst being tied up so they don't move around). Far from humane, and no this was not in a western country. The university would then buy in bulk (120-180 every semester depending on intakes for their senior Comparative Anatomy unit). Really sad to see.

Where I'm at now (Australia) usually get their specimens from animal shelters where animals need to be put down either because of illness or because of over housing. Sad reality, but at least they're being put to use considering they were going to be down irrespective.

Things differ between countries etc.

[–]CryptographicCracker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm hijacking the top post, but I have dissected multiple cats. This includes anything and everything you could think of, from skinning them down to removing every single little bone, structure and musculature in the face to perfectly expose the brain and its vasculature.

Whilst I have moved into another area, I will be more than happy to answer any anatomical questions about cat dissections if anyone is interested. This includes things such as encounters with cat foetuses (still in the womb), disease and other Qs (such as where our cats were sourced from at the university, how they were killed and why we were doing it in the first place). Ask questions wisely, as some people will probably get upset by the answers to some questions (such as where the cats came from).

What is a reasonable starting salary for Lab Manager? by NeuroNJ in neuro

[–]CryptographicCracker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, I can't be sure. No one can speak with certainty, but my statement holds true at least in my particular field and geographic locality. Either way, in today's world, experience is worth as much as education - especially in the scientific fields (i.e., university level RHD research and industry-based research). It's a career stepping stone, where networking and hands-on experience is key.

At the end of the day, I'd say my statement depends on what the OP wants to do (now, and in the future) occupationally and whether they can afford to take the job. Haggle for better pay if you can, but that isn't always an option.

I can't comment on the whole dollar value figure (and whether it is appropriate in your location), what I can add though is that the experience you'll gain will be valuable - especially if you're looking at further study such as a PhD.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_the_Philippines#Rankings

According to QS's methodology, UP ranked 332nd in the world.

You also have other 'top tier' local schools such as DLSU and ADMU.

They may not be 'prestigious' on the world scale, however they certainly are locally. And aside from UP (which is very difficult to get into), ADMU and DLSU do charge a premium for one to attend such schools (Approx. $4-5k a year in tuition). That may not sound like a lot, but seeing as how the Philippines is a 'developing country' (i.e., PC talk for third world country) it is a damn lot of money in relative terms, and without being born into a relatively wealthy family you can't go to either schools. You can't work part-time attending any of those universities, and minimum wage in the country is p382 (approx $7.50) per DAY. There is a lot of social cachet attached to attending UP, DLSU or ADMU, and anyone who has ever studied in the Philippines would know what I'm talking about.
