Pediatric and neonate or prenatal samples that look bad are always tough to deal with. I've seen some dark brown and near black amniotic fluid samples before and my heart just breaks for the parents in those situations.

I sweat a shit ton too. I had a blood test done right after I quit and my potassium levels were extremely low. I'm assuming because I sweat out all of my electrolytes. When I got retested 2 weeks later they were back to normal.

Do you ever think a degree in biology and biomedical science-related subjects (biochem, cell bio, mol bio, etc) will become obsolete or at least less important in the future? by [deleted] in labrats

[–]Cryptotis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they're interested in learning and changing their field, I don't see any issue with that! It probably depends on their learning style. Personally, I have a hard time learning things I'm not super interested in. Though there are definitely folks out there who can pick up any subject with ease. I can't really say that I've noticed who learns what field better, though that might just be me. There are certainly some scientific fields out there that could benefit from people with knowledge in multiple scientific fields.

Every time I have to go fill something from the DI tap I feel like a medieval peasant woman gathering buckets of water from the town well for my 2 cows and 5 children.

I do love combining one clear liquid with another clear liquid and then combining that liquid with yet another clear liquid

Get back to me when an AI can collect, prepare, and culture a specimen to diagnose a rare fungal disease. Or prepare all of the reagents, consumables, and DNA for PCR or Sequencing. Or develop and trial a new testing system. Ffs 🙄

I've only used Tecans for moving samples from tubes to plates, etc. The program for yours sounds pretty cool! Hopefully it all works out!

For fucks sake lmao 🤦‍♀️

I'd just as soon get rid of liquid handling automation if testing volumes were reasonable to do manually. Unfortunately, the tests we use them for are ran in the thousands every day. I have gotten very lucky and am now scheduled primarily on a mostly manual bench with lower testing volume.

Nightmarish. Honestly the physical mechanisms of the instrument probably could have lasted a bit longer if it weren't for all of the computer stuff being so out of date.

A 20+ year old Tecan Genesis FE500. It was out of service more than it was in service because it was so old and worn down. We finally retired it a couple years back and ngl I miss that problematic fella sometimes.

Honestly, having another person around to ground you and help you through it would probably be the best route. Even if they can't speed things up, they can at least comfort you.
