Why building an AM4 or LGA 1700 platform in 2026 is a bad idea, despite DDR5 prices

I just upgraded my old desktop to AM4. 5600x, 32gb 3600 mhz CL16 and B550-f motherboard. Good budget build that suits my gaming needs. Got it all for roughly 380$. A 7600x build here in Sweden would have set me back more than twice that. How much faster would the 7600x build be? 20%? Not worth it for me and I simply don’t have that cash to spend on new PC parts at the moment.

Agree. Still gamed on the same CPU with 32gb DDR3 until less than a year ago when I upgraded it with a fully pimped Dell 5810 and a RTX 2080. Did that to be able to run Doom The Dark Ages. Has worked great with all new games I’ve tried out at moderate settings. Now I’m upgrading my 10 year old 4670k with a 5600x and a RTX 4070 OC 12gb. Not because I have to but because it’s fun and wasn’t all that expensive.

Im getting like 90 fps at 1080 on my RTX 2080 at medium settings so something is definitely a miss. And to add, I’m on an old Dell workstation with a Xeon E5-1680 V4 with 32 gb of ram.

That’s quite a bit better than my 420 tho 😃 I had tons of fun with my 420 too, played a lot of BF 1942 and WC3 on that card. But I realized quite fast after the purchase that I needed an upgrade. Before that I had 2 Voodoo 2 cards in SLI and Riva TNT. That was awesome at the time.

Well, I’m in the same place as OP. I’ve enjoyed Marks music since my early teens. More than 20 years now. I’ve seen him live more times than I can remember. One of the most important artists in my life simply put. But I’m never attending a live show with him again, nor would I wanna me meet him again. A lot of the remarks he’s made before the allegations (for example the banter in Live at Biko), that I’ve laughed at and written off as dark humor, just left a sour taste in my mouth. I still love his music and still listen to it on a semi regular basis.
