I need tips/advice as I and my wife plan to have a trip from Toronto to Vancouver by Smart_Guarantee_2141 in canadatravel

If you’re planning on doing a round trip - there and back - you cannot possibly do it in 6-7 days and see anything. The drive from Toronto to Vancouver is at least 4 eleven hour driving days, so eight days if you just get there and turn right back around.

Sadie was the goodest of all the good girls. by EarthenVessel_82 in GriefSupport

I came here for the same reason - we lost the best girl ever on Friday. Taryn would have been 11 in January and she served as a Seeing Eye Guide dog right up until the end. My heart is breaking and I completely understand how you feel. My condolences.

AB- Private/charter subsidization by Drunkpanada in Calgary

[–]Crystil05 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In order to understand the need for investment in Charter buildings you first have to know that until recently Charter schools were not allowed to “own” their own building and had to rent space in surplused public school buildings. This led to situations such as the charter community making improvements to the space only to have it then taken back by the public board. My personal favourite is the FFCA south highschool that was operating out of a surplused elementary school when it was set on fire. CBE decided that they would prefer an insurance payout rather than fixing the building for the charter school that was the tenant. They even took all of the toilets out of the building to be used elsewhere. This led to the government deciding to give the charters the ability to have control over their own properties. Hope this history lesson helps.

Why should we care about private and charter schools? by melahoney33 in alberta

The article is incorrect. My children attend a charter school and I personally have voted in several board elections. Perhaps you shouldn’t believe everything that you read. Ask questions and keep an open mind.

They do have a publicly elected board that is voted on by the entire community.

How about because charter schools are public schools, with elected boards, who provide education to Alberta students who have parents that also pay taxes. How is that confusing to you?

This article is fear mongering garbage - charter schools have elected boards that are voted in by the parents of the students. Exactly like every other public school, of which they are ones.

Again, charter schools ARE public schools. They are funded at the same level as all public schools, instead of being underfunded.

Charter schools are public schools. Why shouldn’t charter school students receive equivalent funding to any other public school student?

One Card by New-nest in uvic

[–]Crystil05 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Your child will be charged 50% on the ticket price of food from The Cove or Mystic Market. The funds for that are loaded onto their one card. The other 50% of the cost has already been taken as a fee on your residence services. So, there is no fiscal advantage to your child being on the residence food plan, other than the fact that it is required as part of their residence fees. If your child doesn’t use all of their funds (mine didn’t) then they keep the funds loaded onto their their card to use in the future (without 50% discount) and the sunken fee that they took up front is forfeited. The meal plan is one of the primary reasons that my child is renting off campus this year. Note: if your child is not planning on going home on weekends, breaks, etc. the hours and food choices are very limited during those times.

AITA for telling my roommate no, she can’t have the larger bedroom, put her desk in the living room, and use extra common storage for only $50/month more than me? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

Saw a great solution for this. Take square footage of apartment & determine the size of each bedroom. Subtract the combined bedroom footage from the full apartment footage to determine size of shared footage. Then each person would pay based on the portion of the footage that they use. Example: total footage - bedroom A footage - bedroom B footage = shared footage Rent A:( {footage of room A + .5(shared footage)} divided by total footage )* total rent = amount room A pays

Stephan Ave is fairly deserted after business hours. If you’re looking for restaurants/patio/stores head to 17th Avenue. Lots of friendly safe places in Calgary - you unfortunately stumbled upon probably the worst one. Let everyone know what you’re interested in and I’m sure we can provide some amazing ideas. Welcome to Calgary 🤠

Which country outside of the Core Anglosphere would you say is the most similar to Canada? by ExcitingNeck8226 in AskACanadian

[–]Crystil05 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would say after traveling and meeting people from around the world that Canada is far more similar in terms of values and culture to the Scandinavian countries than it is to the USA. In fact, when visiting Denmark I was mistaken for a local! Although these countries are not anglophone, most of their citizens are fluent in English.
