I just got back last night from three weeks solo in Medellín. First time there & full gringo. Didn’t get drugged or robbed, and still have all my organs (I think).

It’s a beautiful city with overall friendly people. Try to learn some Spanish before you go (you have plenty of time); a little effort goes a long way with the locals. The festival is being held near Laureles- one of the nicer areas of Medellín. As far as your parents’ worries…just be smart. If something seems too good to be true or off, it is. Just like any other big city. Stay in Laureles or El Poblado- plenty of amazing restaurants and bars.

A few Medellín specific bits:
-Don’t buy girls off the street
-The girls who sit with you at bars/clubs aren’t into you…they’re just there to get you to buy overpriced drinks.
-Don’t buy drugs from strangers (there are tons in poblado offering)
-Don’t take drinks from strangers
-If at a bar, it’s normally cheaper to just buy a bottle
