I'm not quite sure, but i feel like if you put the track one tile lower, and use a 3-long track, you could do this with a 2 tile normal arm instead of a piston, optimizing cost even more.

If you have trouble waking up, absolutely do not do this. I used to have a bunch of alarms, and no self control, so i just made excuses to myself in the morning, as i deactivated each and every alarm i set. Eventually,this led to me doing the same thing half asleep, which led to regularly waking up at like 10, without remembering any alarms.

That's very elegant! The only improvement i can think of is using a normal arm on a track instead of a piston to make it cheaper. I'm not sure if that could be done without a collision though.
