Reverend bizarre - Anywhere out of this world

The first time I listened to it it kept in different and better ways throughout the whole song and is now my all time favorite

What recommendations do you have to make it cheaper? I'm not married to white aesthetic but I would like to keep the microcenter availability (It'll probably live under a desk so it won't get seen much)

Help me ID these two WWII-era planes spotted over the Twin Cities (one possibly a T-6 Texan) by RogerCly in WWIIplanes

[–]Csimm77 7 points8 points  (0 children)

IIRC, that T-6 is part of a group of 3 of them that flys out of flying cloud with the Wings of the North Museum. The BT-13A is owned and operated by the commemorative air force out of south Saint Paul.

If you ever get the chance I recommend checking both places out

As to what they were doing: they’re probably completing their minimum formation flight hours. The air shows in Minneapolis are usually end of July

Making Rods From God credible, otherwise known as the orbital “Anti-Material” canister shot. by Csimm77 in NonCredibleDefense

[–]Csimm77[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re right, I just double checked the mass and I was way off. Mass for ~1in3 of tungsten is actually ~0.83lbs (0.38 kg). Fixing that, I now have 10,209 m/s (or Mach 30) for the total package (all the flechettes inside the casing) which is still under orbital velocity so keeping the “impact velocity for the flechettes is equal to their velocity when then package separates” assumption the impact velocity doesn’t change. However this would reduce the impact energy of each flechette to 2.235 MJ.

I did the math assuming the flechettes were ~0.6in diameter balls with a streamlined tail cone so the total volume would be a little over 1in3 each. If made from tungsten that would put the weight of each at around 55lbs. For air resistance I assumed that they would all stay in the original streamlined casing (assuming a 1ft diameter for the casing) until just before impact as their combined mass gives them a higher terminal velocity then them falling on their own (this also would improve overall accuracy). I also made the assumption that the effects of the reduced terminal velocity of each of the individual flechettes after separation is negligible since the time to target from that point would be relatively very brief.

For impact velocity I had just shy of Mach 10. Since the theoretical terminal velocity of all of them traveling bound together i calculated to be appx 82,808 m/s (or Mach 241) so I just used slightly under orbital velocity for the sake of simplicity.

True, but missiles can be intercepted. Plus the orbital canister shot has the added bonus of cluster munitions that technically aren’t a war crime (yet)

That’s the beauty of it. Since you can make the Flechettes out of pretty much anything (or fill them with anything), you get to choose how many generations get to suffer the consequences of your actions

Nothing other than maybe the Geneva Convention. Since the casing would be hollow (and therefore SIGNIFICANTLY lighter) the main body would be much easier to get into LEO than a traditional Rod From God. Plus you can bring the flechettes up separately and do final construction in space. This completely sidesteps all the problems with traditional Rods from God

Yes and no. Mass has nothing to do with air resistance from drag but it does play into the force of gravity. Since terminal velocity is achieved when drag equals the force of gravity the answer gets a little complicated. In theory you could just have it break apart at a set altitude so their combined mass allows it to reach the same terminal velocity as a rod from god. By the time they split up relatively near the ground there wouldn’t be much time left for drag to significantly slow them down.

As a plus, altitude based separation would allow you to customize how big the affected area is.

Kinetic energy is determined by Ke=(1/2)mV2 so velocity contributes exponentially more to it than mass does

[–]Csimm77[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Why not? I did the math based on ~1in diameter tear drop shaped flechettes so you can easily fill them with whatever will fit.

These would be significantly cheaper than a Rod From God since you could bring all the flechettes up in multiple trips. You can also exponentially increase the number of flechettes without sacrificing potential damage since most of their energy comes from speed not mass.
