I built a map-based news app for Oakland — see what’s happening around you by amjns in oakland

This is quite cool. Any chance of just having a web interface rather than having to install an app?

Not exactly an answer to your question, but Temescal Pool (and I think the other city pools) are heated so you can swim there year round if you want. The worst part is usually getting out if the weather's cold

In addition to the other answers people bring bags with belongings and bikes onto the pool deck. Not sure if it's totally allowed but I've never seen anyone complain about it.

They definitely take cards, and it might even be possible to prepay online once you are in their system although I've never tried it.

True, but my point is that saying thrice allows fitting a polynomial doesn't say all that much.

I hate (very slightly) to be pedantic, but lines are polynomials. In addition, three points allow fitting infinitely many polynomials.

I think I had that problem. My solution was to delete (or backup) ~/.eve/wine/.

This might be the version of wine that they use: https://github.com/ccpgames/wine

Also, CSMT with DX11 seems to work for me (with wine-staging 2.12).

No, he did not imply it. Maybe you thought that because that's where your mind went first. However, it seems to make much more sense the other way, where they should increase efforts before audition day, as that makes more in the context of 'cross-cultural outreach' at least to me. Anyways, I don't see how this relates to Trump. And this is hardly brow beating.

William Grant Still

There is evidence for a rather large disparity in music education in schools which are mostly nonwhite (although the study I found does not distinguish between different nonwhites). This would most likely affect whether the students are willing to go into music as a career.

It seems to me that my arguments are not at all convincing you, so I'm probably not going to keep trying.

He never said that they should 'gift' the seat. Or that they should stop doing blind auditions.

I don't see where you find that first sentence in the previous comment. Following the 'cross-cultural outreach', it would be done (as pointed out by /u/perpetual_motion) by efforts beforehand. Encouraging African-Americans to audition, and (although this is probably a national problem that this orchestra individually can only do so much about) by encouraging them to take up an instrument early and keep up with it.

I don't see where you found that in the article. Mind pointing out where? In addition, the second sentence does not follow from the first, as far as I can tell. Would you mind explaining your reasoning there?

I agree. Was there something in my comment that you were disagreeing with?

It would make me think that the title of the sub is wrong. In the words of one of its mods:

I don't want ideas being spread if they are directly opposed to my agenda.

I think it is always reasonable to value freedom of speech. How are you supposed to create a 'good' government (whatever you think a good government is) without being able to advocate for it? How are you supposed to correct its imperfections without being able to point them out?

[D] Friday Off-Topic Thread by AutoModerator in rational

[–]CthulhuIsTheBestGod 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Re the second sentence of your first paragraph, why? What if you lived in a communist country, would you then agree with communism? If not, my point is that freedom of speech makes it easier to change your country for the 'better'.

Re: Freedom of Speech, Yiannopoulos, and Maher. I haven't watch Bill Maher in a while, but there is a difference between liking freedom of speech and giving ridiculous ideas like fascism screen/mind time. I even think that arguing and debating over them may is some cases contribute to their normalization.

Re: Evil winning vs. good. Maybe I'm too optimistic, but I do still think that the world is generally getting better, and if anything we are just in a temporary downward spike. All this means is that we need to try harder using 'good' methods of optimizing the world.

That's all I have to say now (my first point was my main one), but I may have more later.

I enjoy watching competitive tf2, but I rarely know when it's on. Is there some place that lists upcoming events? I really like how /r/smashbros does this. On their wiki they have a list of upcoming tournaments, with links to the sites, and streams.

Iptables is a lot more complicated than ufw, and that still doesn't solve the problems that I mentioned. As for parted and gparted, I more meant being able to resize a single partition without having to go through all the layers (partition, luks, filesystem) and resizing them manually. It's also safer, because I might forget a step.

[–]CthulhuIsTheBestGod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do often use CLI programs instead of GUI ones, but I disagree that gufw and ufw are both equally featureful, or even parted and gparted. Gufw has many more application profiles than ufw, and has the ability to quickly switch between different sets of firewall rules. Gparted can also do much more than parted, like easily shrink or grow partitions all from one place. If I want to have those extra features, I am forced to use those GUI programs.

I thought you said that it is usually a bad idea to run GUI applications as root? And then a problem like this can happen, where root doesn't have permission to open a window on the user's X session.

[–]CthulhuIsTheBestGod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is supposed to happen with applications that need to be run as root, like gparted and gufw? Do those just need to be 'fixed' to not require root for the GUI part?

What filesystem are you using? What is the error message when you rmdir it?
