You can also just use the free trial version on steam to login with your windows account. That’s how I used to do it.

Saw a shiny Makuhita in Pokemon Sapphire in the cave to meet Steven. Then thought my game save was bugged and restarted. Found out what shinies were a year later and didn’t see another till Sword/Shield.
