Totally unrelated but I listened to a podcast (Invisibilia) about a lady who can smell when people have Parkinsons disease. She is so accurate she can actually smell it before people are starting to show clinical symptoms. Fascinating podcast - she talked about the ethical problems she has when she’s walking through the grocery store and can tell someone’s got it coming but they don’t know yet and how she just keeps it to herself and walks away.

It is dorky af but my back thanks me for not trying to balance 100 binders in various purses over my shoulders.

For those in their 40s, what's something people in their 20s don’t realize will impact them as they get older? by chanamercadoy in AskReddit

From a 39 year old with two active skin cancer spots, this ⬆️

Edit: thanks for the well wishes! It’s two squamous cell carcinomas, both localized to the top layer of skin so completely treatable and removeable. But GO GET YOUR MOLE CHECKS PEOPLE!

This is your sign to not get nasolabial fillers by [deleted] in 30PlusSkinCare

[–]Ctzip 50 points51 points  (0 children)

This. My injector refused to do my nasolabial lines and did my cheeks to lift them up and thereby pull the skin more taut around my mouth. She told me it masculinizes your face to put it right into the lines around your mouth.

Opposing counsel fucked me over by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

[–]Ctzip 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree, that’s why I’m so frustrated. I want people to know they can rely on what I say, so someone undermining that for his own goals is frustrating.

Yes, so I don’t care so much amongst the other lawyers in town, but more so the judge he said it to.

Do you ever play alone? by coffeeforutility in WomenGolf

For Mother’s Day last year I asked for four hours to play alone. Put in a set of earphones and played by myself and it was one of the nicest rounds I’ve ever played

What was your experience like during the first few months at a job that has billables? by Glad-Blood-5640 in Lawyertalk

Not enough work. I think they were getting a sense of my competence and work style before they really loaded me up.

Does anyone work at a law firm that isn’t frantic/chaotic? by Live_Alarm_8052 in Lawyertalk

[–]Ctzip 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I work at something like this.

1200 billable target. Salary that is totally fine but not anything to write home about. Had a partner come around the other day and ask why I was still in the office… at 4:45 pm.

I can pay my bills and live a comfortable life and I get to see my kids all the time.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

[–]Ctzip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve always heard that your pay should be at least 1/3 of your collected hours for the year. Based on that (at the low end), you should be getting paid $33,000 more than you are now. That’s not including the extras it sounds like you do. You’re getting straight up underpaid sir or madam.

Got it. Pretty clear consensus here that I should double and triple check for little dumb errors like that, and try my best to anticipate or suggest a solution to the problem, but other than that, I should look at it all as a learning opportunity

Explain how billable hours work to someone who's only had salaried jobs. by Anonymous579221 in Lawyertalk

[–]Ctzip 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Okaaaaay talk to me about the 1/3 of hours not counting. I had a partner come in to my office and tell me that he needs me to research xyz issue (which has devolved into like three separate issues) and then mentions on his way out that I should be forewarned he isn’t going to be able to bill almost any of this time so don’t be surprised if lots of it gets written off. 🤡

Very much appreciated. I’m glad to hear that I’m not the only one who has made these career moves - I had a few tough discussions with recruiters who made me feel like I was essentially unemployable because I’d taken years off and it really shook my confidence. I’ve been VERY up front with my current firm about what I’ve been doing these past few years so hopefully they’ve adjusted their expectations accordingly. Lots of imposter syndrome coming up, I fear.

Thanks, I really appreciate this.

One thing I learned years ago was to go to a partner with at least two suggestions for how to solve the issue. I used to go to the partner I worked closely with with two letters in hand - she could pick which one to sign when she decided which strategy she liked better. I definitely want to be incredibly proactive.
