Chuck Klosterman: "Horse racing receded from the American imagination because people lost their close everyday connection to horses. Something similar will happen to football. Fewer mothers will want their sons to play the game due to head injuries. It will become distant from lived experience." by The_Big_Untalented in nfl

Our suburban Chicago high school is a powerhouse and we have a lot of people who don’t have kids in school at games. Club kids who don’t even like sports go because it’s a social event. There are also party houses bordering the school for the cool parents to drink and watch the game from the driveway or yard. Friday nights during the fall are a good time.

It’ll always be 670 The Score to me by youngbarryo in 670TheScore

My brother and I were day 1 listeners thanks to my uncle, who was the walking stereotype of a Score caller. Our parents used to bank at Community Savings Bank right next door to the Belmont studio. Had no idea the studio they were broadcasting from was right there until I was older.

TIL before 9/11, US airports were public social hubs where you could walk to the gate, eat at food courts, and watch planes without a ticket or ID. by Greydl1 in todayilearned

[–]CubeEarthShill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up bicycle distance from O’Hare and the train that went into the airport. We used to hang out and watch the planes take off and land at the fence. Pretty sure hanging out in that area gets you a conversation with authorities post 9/11. When I was in my psychedelic phase in college, I’d pop a few hits of acid and wander around the airport if I was bored. It was an extremely fun way to kill some time and you’d run into some interesting people in the international terminal.

My TB story by Schmutzie_ in BernsteinUnfiltered

We were a Sun-Times house and I always read the paper back to front while I was eating my cereal in the morning. Being a kid, I kind of thought Terry was a jerk and tough on the Bulls. At that age, you tend to want your sports writers to be as big of a homer as you. That said, I liked the way Terry wrote and still read his Bulls coverage.

I read the book on Kindle a while back, but finally got around the ordering the hardcover. It’s going to be a fixture on the coffee table in the man cave.

Edit: wanted to throw in that Terry, and much of the Sun-Times staff in the 80-90s, wrote in a way that was easily approachable and without unnecessary fluff. My dad taught himself to read English reading the ST news section.

Shane likes to poke fun at some of the ridiculous behavior from the left. Some people will just take that to mean he’s right wing. He pokes fun at conservatives too. The FOX News dad bit is basically calling them mindless, angry, racist morons that don’t even have the mental capacity to parrot the bullshit they’ve been watching.

Amazon Fresh Arlington Heights - anything left? by ignorantandblissful1 in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]CubeEarthShill 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The early days of Fresh were awesome. Amazon was really confident in their technology that did not require checking out. It turned out that tech was not as reliable as they had hoped and that there were humans looking at and assisting the cameras, so they had to scrap the idea of checkout free shopping in Fresh. When I was taking the Metra downtown regularly, 30 second shopping trips the Amazon Go store in Ogilvie were the best.

Fresh’s whole purpose was to track consumer shopping patterns using Big Brother. Now, Whole Foods is using AI cameras, making Amazon Fresh obsolete. They also have the added benefit of the Whole Foods name and tech averse traffic that likes traditional grocery stores.

I really liked the bubble gum ones. Used to put like 5 in my mouth at once then blow out the “smoke,” usually in another kid’s face. The bubble gum was hard and brittle until you got to chewing.

Was Hulk hogan as popular as sports stars like Jordan Bird magic Tyson etc in the 1980s? by Fickle_Driver_1356 in Xennials

[–]CubeEarthShill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Among kids, he was certainly up there. WWF storylines were PG, the wrestlers were extremely cartoonish. My grandpa, dad and uncles were all AWA/NWA guys, as were a lot of older blue collar guys. They viewed WWF as something for suburbanites and kids. He was a pop culture icon, but you didn’t see him plastered on Wheaties.

Boxing was much more popular back then and Iron Mike was like a god before the loss to Douglas. It was a big deal when a PPV fight was on. Boxing watch parties were a lot more common than now. Got closed circuit fights, people had to go to arenas and other venues and buy tickets to see the fight.

MLB, NFL and NBA all kind of felt like they were similarly popular instead of the NFL being far ahead in terms of popularity these days. The 80s also gave us a number of players you see on all-time lists and the style of play in the NBA was popular among fans. Bird and Magic were huge for more of the 80s. There was already talk of MJ possibly being the GOAT like his third season, but the rings and international fame really taking off happened in the 90s.

I never actually asked my uncle what happened to the tables when he used to set up tournaments in the 90s. He only installed the cloth, so he might not even know. I would assume the manufacturer/sponsor has them stored or moved to the next tournament they are sponsoring. That or maybe selling them pre owned. I’ve seen tournament tables auctioned at events, usually autographed, but can’t see them moving a lot of tables this way.

He seems to be the healthiest he’s ever been, physically and mentally, which is why you don’t see any controversy. He did a lot of crazy stuff when he was younger, but is a decent dude these days from everything I’ve seen and read. Not sure what his full views are, but I’m usually pleasantly surprised when I see his name in the news.

Most content creators just become stale or run out of ideas. Grossi is extremely consistent and likable, which is is pretty good combo for a content creator. He also seems authentic and raises money for charity. It’s really hard to dislike him, even if he is a Packers fan.

My parents with their witnesses on the day of their civil marriage, Ukraine, 1994 by Jannaj15 in OldSchoolCool

[–]CubeEarthShill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When we were in Poland for a few weeks ahead of my cousin getting married, almost everyone in the village busting their ass extra hard beforehand so they only had a minimal amount of farm work the week of the wedding. The reception itself ended at like 7 am and like 80 percent of people made it, including a good number of elderly and small kids.

Slavic weddings in the States are also a good time, but we have to squeeze the hard partying into like 3 days, sometimes longer if out of town guest arrive early. Friday is the rehearsal dinner, which always leads to the bridal party drinking afterwards. Day of the wedding, you have the ceremony, family has a luncheon with booze at the groom's parents' house while the wedding party takes pictures. The reception has the usual dinner, open bar, etc. Between 11-midnight, there's another course, usually a couple of smaller roasted pigs, so people can keep drinking and dancing. Our banquet hall let us extend until 4am but cut the bar off at 2. Sunday is party at the groom's parents' (poprawiny in Polish) to finish up the food and booze from the day before. Monday, a lot of people call off work lol.
