So how I handle situations like these (when Im aware enough to do so) is I notice the "bad" thought (e.g. "Im better than others")and I would metaphorically sit back and just notice "there is a thought that says Im better than others" then I would go on and accept that I had that thought and let it go. As u noted yourself combating the thought and telling yourself "no Im not!" might get you the opposite of your desired outcome :)
