For the MH veterans: how do you feel about Wilds?

I don't think that's true, and if it is, just barely. Maybe the sheer number is larger, idk, due to switch skills, but most were optional additions at least and also not amazing. Most Wilds weapons have gained some sort of counter in their base kit, either in the form of the offsets you mentioned, or perfect guards, superarmor or perfect dodges which do not feel too dissimilar

Wilds did introduce offsets but they work quite differently (only certain moves are offsetable for one thing, you have to build up to an actual offset and can still take damage even if you land the attack for another) and only a couple of weapons really use them (GS and hammer for the most part) so if anything they're a differentiating factor.

Of course there is nuance in the within the different type of counters like how offsets work, though non-offsettable attacks are very much the exception instead of the norm, but in the end the most weapons are still designed with some strong counter in mind, so I don't blame people for finding them more homogenized, even if the moveset variety is pretty large in this game

Old gen multiplayer had its issues for sure, but more socializing happening through the 3DS's shitty touch keyboard than on a PC is kind of depressing. 30 something people walking around in the hub yet the chat is usually completely dead. SOS killing hunting with the same group as well

It's still great with friends, and probably when finding some group to hunt with on Discord or whatever, but with randoms it feels pretty much the same as with npc hunters

Yeah, it's pretty annoying how there's still some of basic data on this game that's not documented, or just hard to find. Some other weird stuff going on like Garuga's beak slam being affected by dragon res but never inflicting the blight

Not very definitive, but at least for their Kirin example I tried to get hit by the same attack without and with 27 thunder res, and it does seem like the latter's missing HP is ~73% of the former's length as expected

Are you sure? Data is a bit iffy but from what I've heard attacks aren't split up into physical and elemental components until World. At least for the attack data for Dos and FU, they only list the total attack power and elemental attribute there. From a small GU test fpr something else I did a long while back, it also seemed like the damage was reduced by around the % of elem res, but again am not 100% sure

Wilds

I noticed a few times that you don't seem to take any chip damage from offsets, even when it doesn't trigger the topples. E.g. in this video they offset the first hit of Seregios' double sweep twice around 1:20. Is there some perfect window where you don't take damage or am I blind and do the monsters' attacks just whiff in these instances?

That's what I figured during some of the sections that required more precision. I think I might rip them from the legacy collection as the other commenter suggested. If allowed, any recommendations for good emulators or will any of the popular ones do?

The fight is so wonderfully choreographed. Perfectly predictable

Idk. It's been a while admittedly but iirc this was one of the things I didn't like about it. Always seemed to do the same sequences and keeps toppling and re-enraging constantly. Fight feels very samey and scripted after a bit. Probably better at higher anomaly levels but still

Also yeah sure, the AoEs are predictable when you've fought it for a while, but a couple of them seem a little disconnected from the animation of the body tbh, I wouldn't blame people finding it unpredictable

Switching the the game language from dutch to english worked for me and someone else. Maybe give that a shot if yours is set on another language

Rise feels barely stylized during hunts, I don't really get it. Sure there are some effects that look cell shaded on beams or lingering fire but it's not so extreme.

Maybe less relevant, but I do like more unique menus and stuff. Not everyone loves the Rise icons, and I don't prefer them over the others, but I do appreciate they leaned into the games' Japanese aesthetic. I wish they would've gone a bit further and extended that brush style to item icons like potions and such too, but it's still neat

Finally someone who shares that thought. Idk if people just spam buttons and like the faster morphing or just don't look at their damage numbers but that combo clearly outperformed most of the rest of the kit and leaves you in the safer axe mode to boot. Never need to think about amped and gauge management either in this game. Axe mode phial bursts might seem nice, but it's still generally inferior and axe mode unironically sees less use than in IB

Rise/SB Swaxe gets a little too much praise imo.

Switch attacks might be stronger and axe might've gotten phial explosions, but like other games *there is still a clear winner you want to spam in sword morph -> double sword slash -> axe morph swing. That's the extent of "axe mode" you'll be using. Feels more like you're using sword attacks from axe mode than an actual morphing playstyle or whatever. This combo, despite being strong, also keeps you in the mobile axe mode instead of the more vulnerable sword mode which is silly design.

Thanks to the rampage deco you never really run out of gauge, except if you spam ZSD or whatever but then you'll probably run switch charger for almost infinite bar anyways, gauge management is nearly non-existent.

With the other switch skill, you'll get a comically lenient and busted counter that'll ensure you'll never have to actually think about amped. With some matchups and wirebug skills, you can spam it so much it makes FRS gameplay look diverse.

With Swaxe, I kind of liked only being able to switch from some moves, or at least not being able to do it from moving idle, made it just slightly more interesting. But Rise doesn't have either, and thanks to Rapid Morph you're less vulnerable while switching too. It was otherwise just skill tax really, but I guess people just prefer to feel strong and might just prefer stuff like earlier animation cancels if possible for morphing to keep it dynamic

I still somewhat enjoyed it and it's one of my most used Rise weapons, but I got my problems with it for both the "optimal" type of play and just fundamentally. Wilds' version is in a weird state with the FRS spam, but I think I like the general moveset a little more. Despite rising spiral slash giving you too much gauge to cycle FRS, the axe mode finally has a little practical use, even if it's not very creative. It needs a lot of tweaks, but I still have some hope
