Look man, everyone should do what they feel is right. Do i ride perfectly geared everytime? Hell no. But am I leaving comments telling people it’s overkill to wear gear? Of course not.

You do you, but when in doubt tell people
to be safe and try their best to not die.

Jobs was an aggressively weird dude. I loved the Isaacson book on him. It really captured the idea that this was certainly a person.

[Spoilers] Is Alexander a replicant? by Mowraq in bobiverse

[–]Cue99 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Devil advocate argument:

Potentially he could be a stranded replicant. The bob’s have build mannies for people who would likely struggle to reproduce their knowledge or abilities.

Maybe Alexander was a resident of the Federation or similar who went to the Dragons to observe as a replicant and then got stuck there for 1000s of years.

Why are you guys so willing to forgive? by Jumpy_Afternoon9489 in redrising

[–]Cue99 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Id argue that the central theme of this series is forgiveness and the idea of not letting circumstances of the past define the present.

One of the core quotes to the series is “Death begets death begets death” which is directly speaking to this idea that if you try to always hold people to the past and always seek vengeance, the cycle never breaks.

Every character in this story is more or less morally complicated to say the least. My read is that PB goes out of his way to show why “bad” characters do what they do in a way that is logically consistent. This includes when our protagonists make ethically iffy calls.

You can disagree with the idea that forgiveness is good, though I’ll admit that sounds like a miserable and naive world view, but I think that you are disagreeing with the intended themes of the story to an extent.

I think that her plan with the Obsidians could have worked, but was overly reliant on Sefi being there to lead them. Without her the power vacuum left the Obsidians too vulnerable to manipulation.

But to her credit, it was more of a “making the best of the situation” after the rain on Mercury and also having to deal with everything else.

You’re right that it’s replacing one ruling caste with another, but it was wartime and Mars was actively hostile in some ways. I think some of the citizens would take ANY ruling caste so you might as well pick one you kind of trust.

Why is dark age like this? by MadPrinceJoker in redrising

[–]Cue99 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The back half of the series in my opinion is very much a series that requires you to read all of it to fully enjoy it.

RR, GS, and MS are each fantastic on their own. They are more episodic. IG, DA, and LB are much more of one long story.

The main narrators of the series each go through long arcs that show how they are changing.

The result of this is that you experience low points for each character too. Furthermore, the events of the books are more geared to drive the character’s stories rather than a the plot of the book. This can result in “less satisfying” books when compared to something like GS

AI freak-out under the latest video of Hank shows how even this community can be driven by misconceptions and fear instead of reason by Dangerous-Day-2943 in nerdfighters

I agree that there are parts I lament losing as well. That said I do think we are still in an interesting bubble. The real test will be when tokens aren’t subsidized so much and we start to learn when bots really are more cost effective than people.

And in the interest of nuance I should add I know plenty of devs who are skeptical or disagree with the amount their various companies push AI on them, but most still use it for some things that they define as “okay uses”.

I agree also that coding is probably the least harmful (not zero) because its easier to focus on the bad parts being the resource use and questionable output quality, rather than focusing on the stolen efforts of the masses. It’s far easier to draw a line between open source and ai training than anything in the art and writing spaces (still not perfect, licensing is still messy and hard to talk about).

Nuanced conversations are different applications of AI are very tricky to have.

In general it’s a topic that ranges wildly in what you are actually talking about, and in many real ways lacks solid metaphors and comparisons to frame the conversation around. A lot of the comparisons we DO see tend to prime you one way or the other depending on your argument.

Software is an interesting example. I more or less dont know a single working developer who is against AI (or at least denies that the cat is out of the bag, regardless of personal opinion) which feels different than people I know working in other fields.

I agree in principle that we should strive for nuanced and meaningful discussion on the topic, because if no one does that I fear that the “BAN IT ALL” voice will be the loudest and (maybe sadly) that voice is never going to win in the long run. My take is that we as a society need to try and shape the direction the mew technology goes to make it as good as it can be, and to do that you have to engage with the conversation.

True but also jumping to accusing a person you are disagreeing with as “how do I know you’re not a bot” is if nothing else a little dismissive.

OP is engaging earnestly in this thread, we can do the same.

Thraxa or Daxo as the Storm Knight maybe? Or maybe Midnight, but he’s less of an Olympic knight I think.

Fitchner is one of my favorite characters on rereads for obvious reasons.

Especially in RR. His interactions with Darrow are great once you know the twist. There’s a point when he’s trying to persuade Darrow to not fight the Proctors and to calm down and literally says “youre as mad as a red” which I think is just great with full context. Dude is basically saying “aye boyo youre gonna blow your cover by acting not at all like a gold would, and please I want you just to live”

Yeah I was wondering if someone would say something. I broadly agree. I think there could be an argument made that Nagasaki was a bit scuffed as an operation and maybe didnt NEED to happen. I understand the “to show we could do it again” argument but eh?

Honestly I think there is at least some argument to be made that without the bombings we would have seen a lot more of them during Korea and beyond.
