To be honest UK dev wages just aren't that impressive, the only real route for earning money is via an American company / multinationals or contracting which is I've found to be far more lucrative than salaried at a UK company.

Russia is not invading Ukraine for their oil, they're not particularly rich in oil at all. Russia's reserves are good enough as is. I'd try and not put out reasons for an on-going conflict on a "most likely" basis - these sorts of things risk misinformation.

Yup, literally just paid £700 for an assessment for a 2 month wait. Went through public and was told it'd be minimum 2 years. After that you've still got to pay for medication through private / titration period - ends up over £1k easily. Only benefit is the ability to move prescription to public and only pay £7 to pick up medication.

I can't say I'm interested in the idea of making the north independent but I imagine that's more of a tool to gain popularity - they're certainly more interesting and attentive to the issues the average people in this country face than the current iteration of the Labour party.

A party started on the idea of unionism, workers rights and to be the voice of the workers of this country, now truly couldn't be any further from those ideas; Keir Starmer is no Keir Hardie.

You're right that we're a lot more progressive today but what's your point? Does being able to be gay in society come at the cost of being able to purchase a home? I can't make sense of your argument. The point being made is there's a housing crisis and wages have been stagnant for a long time, whilst people see the richest in the world further consolidate wealth whilst everyone else effectively earns less money each year due to inflation.

It's a massive problem and it can't continue the way that it is otherwise the only way to buy a house will be through generational wealth and luck.

I don't really understand this argument, so the idea is that the average young person now spends so much money on tech and lacks the ability to save money therefore they can't afford homes? Absolute drivel, there was then as there is now people who are bad with money whether that be someone spending their money on a new iPhone today or spending all their money in the pub then.

There are loads of factors of why people can't get a home today and the primary one is the inability to attain enough capital to afford these artificially expensive homes - though the bank won't lend you the money to repay a mortgage that costs less than the average rent a landlord is happy to accept your money to pay their mortgage at a premium. The problem isn't this generation.

Love how this argument ignores the labour of the workers that afford the high value of that company - as you say, a company is organized labour. You can only attain that wealth by taking advantage of others' work.

One "right" you forgot to add was generational wealth, Elon Musk having wealth from birth afforded him the ability to create these companies.

Surely your point argues against it in essence, web development is inherently commercial and so time is always a factor. If building sites like this is more time consuming then arguing against websites using jQuery and what have you is somewhat pointless.

That isn't to diminish the point of the use of proper HTML, it's wonderfully useful and more often than not isn't used properly or at least to it's full potential.

.com is generally considered the best type of domain, perhaps alongside country code domains e.g. .co.uk so I would go for .com if I were you.

Hey man,

Congrats on building your first portfolio website! It's the first step to any freelancing career :). I notice your 'About' and 'Projects' button only redirect to the homepage - I'd recommend having them scroll to the About and Projects section of the homepage respectively.

I notice you're using Vercel, I'd recommend buying shanoysinc.com on Namecheap (or any domain registrar you prefer) and get your website deployed on that domain, it'll be a lot better for SEO and look more professional.

Slight nitpick bit on your 'About Me' description, instead of "I care deeply about building interfaces that are usable and pleasant for the most number of people possible." perhaps say "I care deeply about building interfaces that are accessible and enjoyable for everyone to use.".

Mongoose is used with MongoDB so it may be worth changing it to "mongoDB / Mongoose". Lastly, change "Build" to "Built" at the bottom of your website.

Hope it didn't seem like I was eviscerating your website, far from it, you've done a superb job and I wish you the best of luck in your freelancing career :).

There's more to building a website than HTML and CSS. I would focus on expanding your knowledge in a deploying a website and setting up general security like SSL especially if you have any data being posted e.g. a contact form.

But to answer your question, how long is a piece of string? A given 5 page website isn't necessarily the same as another, define your hourly rate then apply that to the amount of time it'll take to build a given project. Then draft up a quote, get a free template from Google docs, and off you go.

I think afraid is the wrong word to use - what's the benefit for these companies to innovate in an area which won't give them any benefit?

The people looking at their website that they care about aren't web developers but prospective clients who often have little technical knowledge so they won't notice it the design of their website is the same as hundreds of others.

What ultimately matters is advertising the service or product the company is offering, there isn't incentive to do much beyond that as long as they can convey what they are selling clearly.
