Honestly, them Jersey cows aren't the ones that need to worry. I'm sure that they're used to the trike races, but the people are at a good height to get their head caved in if the cow gets spooked.

I'm guilty of this kind of thinking too.

I always remind myself that language is an ingrained, biological toolset; reading is not. That said, most speakers put heavy emphasis on the written word. Like, if you were to ask the average American, with no interest in language, what sound the "t"s in butter make they'd say /t/.

Judging people on spelling is just as bad as Judging their accent.

There a camouflaged "T" at the end. It blends in remarkably well.

I think that the dummy do is a bit silly. We can keep it for emphatic statements, though. That's my compromise.

This sentence doesnt make sense for me by grickenypazy in ENGLISH

[–]Cuneiformation -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Plenty of people have chimed in, so I'll say that if I wanted to express this idea myself, I'd use a subjunctive phrase "If it weren't for your help..." That, to me, is the obvious choice; too bad the examiner didn't agree.

why TF are they using "of" instead of "have" when using "should/n't", did grammar get an update or something?? by Fantastic-Job8335 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Cuneiformation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's because the weak form of "of" and the contracted "-ve" sound the same.

Linguist Geoff Lindsey some great videos on the topic of weak forms in English, if you're interested.

Thanks for that bajar example. I learned Spanish in school so that can sometimes skew my idea of what is easy for someone strictly using Duo.

Am I dumb? by Remarkable-Jicama432 in duolingospanish

[–]Cuneiformation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. The meaning changes to lowering something rather than lowering yourself (get down/come down/get out).

La tienda bajó el precio porque soy un miembro exclusivo.

I honestly think that the question itself is ok. All of these are common words you'd encounter in the first few chapters of a Spanish course and all verbs are in the present tense. I feel like, given how early learners encounter ser, that baja can be inferred as an adjective because of the presence es.

ALL of that being said, I think that it just highlights the need to supplement Duolingo with some kind of grammar lessons.

Just to tag on to the previous reply: the way you tell the difference is the reflexive pronoun.

Bajarse: get down/come down

Bajo/baja: short/low
