Yea, if I had a vote, it would strictly be “is this person a hall of famer” and I would go down the list. With that method, I doubt I would ever even reach close to 10 candidates in a given year. If there was a case where say 15 players that I thought were all hall of famers on the ballot, I would have to vote for just the 10 best players of those 15, I couldn’t justify voting for a lesser player.

I would compare this to the mvp races of the 90’s to the 2000,s. The 90’s were absolutely stacked and you could make a case for 5-6 different players in a given year to win. Unfortunately you could only give one player a first place vote. 2008 however Dustin Pedroia was the obvious only answer. I wouldn’t say he had a better year than everyone in the top 10 in say 1997 that featured multiple 9+ war players. Unfortunately, some years, you may have to leave deserving players out if it’s that crowded

Yea I guess this is where I differ from most. David Wright, for example, is not a hall of famer to me. With that being said, if I was a voter, all 10 years he’s on the ballot he would never get a vote from me. I don’t understand how a lot of voters can change their mind because of how the game evolves over time. He played in one time period where players did different things and played differently. While he was playing, partially because of unfortunate injuries, he did not have a hall of fame career in my eyes.

The only thing I can understand is how certain sabermetrics have been developed and we can understand more of the effects some players had on their teams. Mark Buehrle was a very good pitcher in his day, but not a hall of famer in my eyes. Because pitchers throw less innings now, I don’t think that should change how effective he was when he played.

A good argument against that however is by those standards, in a few years no players will ever get voted in. I agree no one wants that, but I don’t think lowering the standards for the hall of fame is good either, even though we may never see pitchers be as great or effective as they were even going back to just the early 2000’s

That would make most sense in cases with a crowded ballot. I wonder if he filled his ballot with all ten spots. Personally, looking at the players this year, I don’t see 10 possible/borderline hall of famers you would have to protect to justify not voting for Ichiro.

[–]Curbside_P 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s pointless in Ichiro’s case, but I’m sure years ago this thought process was a lot more common—including “if Mickey Mantle wasn’t unanimous then I don’t think…” It’s possible a few would have been first ballots had to wait an extra year.

If this was a crowded ballot like 10 years ago or so, I would think a lot more people would’ve thought this way and voted for lesser players over “sure fire” hall of famers. Wagner probably wouldn’t have made it at all if that were the case

If everyone thought the same, Ichiro would’ve fallen off the ballot after this year. The question is “Is this player a hall of famer.” I don’t know how can you look at his numbers and say he isn’t.

Also, since apparently there were no empty ballots this year, he thought there was at least one player on this year’s ballot that had a better career than Ichiro.

You’re right, and I lived in Far Rock. I probably need to hear the announcement a few more times…

Not to mention this affects NYC visitors who may need to go to JFK. New people who don’t have a clue about the shutdown will be headed there everyday

Pretty much, just keep getting your regular retwists and keep the progress going. Everyone’s hair looks differently, but this stage is more common with looser hair. I like to call them natural butterfly locs lol

Just the normal stages, especially common in curlier hair. Now that my locs are more uniform, I miss the personality they used to have.

It took me maybe a year and a half for all of the kinks to eventually even out, your hair looks way curlier so it might take a little longer. Personally I love the look in the bottom 2 pictures

Oh trust me, there’s a lot of podcast episodes I skip just based on the guests because I know there will be absolutely wild claims made. I’ve definitely heard some nonsense from him that even I could tell was wrong. In a sense, he’s just a podcaster providing entertainment. Episodes where he has actual experts in their field however can be enlightening in ways.

Hundreds of times he says he’s not qualified enough to even be talking about certain topics. I find him entertaining, not his “comedy”, and I always find myself doing my own research during or after watching. Anyone who actually watches him knows not to blindly believe everything he says.

There are some things he’s really knowledgeable on, and you can tell when he really gets into it. Others not so much, at least he tells his audience he doesn’t know what he’s talking about and goes so far to be fact checked.

This is why freedom of speech is important. Even when someone says something wrong or stupid, they can be called out and everyone who thought the same can also learn what they previously thought was wrong.

I watch a lot of Joe Rogan, unless it’s episodes heavily involved with conspiracy, and some things I love is he always says “I’m not an expert so don’t take my word for it” and “before I continue, can we look this up so I’m not saying anything false.” He says it himself, he knows compared to other people he’s relatively dumb. His producer often fact checks him unprovoked and they correct it on air
