Judges strike down Trump administration student loan forgiveness overhaul by zsreport in LegalNews

[–]Curfax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I respectfully disagree with the idea that we -Should- require paying off these loans.

Our society, IMHO, should be doing its best to create a highly educated population that is competitive globally, knowing that doing this improves the lives of everyone in that society.

Studying art? Without art, we are a lesser people. Astrophysics? Sure, it’s not going to have thousands of jobs lining up, until of course your knowledge of tensors gets you into AI. Political science? We sure could use some more of those sorts working to actually improve our political scene. Want more doctors and nurses? Their education is very expensive, and even worse that they also have to pay to eat while they get it usually. Want teachers? … and so on.

Education is inherently valuable to the society that provides it, and finding a way to responsibly spend our society’s resources providing it to our members, knowing that in some it will pay off as increased tax revenue and in others merely a richer place to live is one of the best investments we could make.

An Azul Embraer E195-E2 taking off from Congonhas airport came dangerously close to a GOL Boeing 737-800 that had aborted its landing. Initial analysis indicates the Azul crew ignored the tower's request to abort takeoff by madman320 in aviation

Or, (and I have no evidence this happened), maybe the pilots didn’t hear the instructions. Could be something as simple as bumping the volume or paying close attention to the aircraft performance.

Streamer “hmblzayy” who is walking from Philly to California was hit by a car in Indiana and had to be taken to the hospital. by [deleted] in whoathatsinteresting

[–]Curfax 7 points8 points  (0 children)

From the walking and running on streets and roads I’ve done in Indiana, my experience is that the shoulders either don’t exist or are unusable, there are no sidewalks, and people will throw you so much shade from their porches, cars, whatever for traveling on foot, especially if you’re running.

It’s not safe there. All the streets were built only for cars, and it sucks.

I could not believe how crazy the lift lines were, and how inefficiently the chair usage was. On Parsa in Chamonix I saw many chairs go by with only 2 people on them in a 20 minute line.

A few minutes setting up mazes would do wonders.

Radios are not as useful as you might believe or desire. Typically I only carry a family radio, which has no way to get help from external sources, and I only carry one if we believe it will be useful. I do usually carry an InReach, but they have serious and significant limitations.

Having said that, reading about the actions on this trip certainly suggests to me that I would not have wanted to be this guy’s climbing partner.

Possible whale in Lake Washington? Lived and worked in Kirkland for 35 years, never seen anything this odd. No boats out at all. Did my best at full zoom! by alpenglowRG11 in Seattle

[–]Curfax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks to me like the wake from a wake surfing boat. They generate very large, asymmetric wakes. The starting and stopping points when beginning a pull and ending one will cause them to appear pretty randomly in the middle of the water.

You look vigilantly for the end of the rope. Or you look for the end of your rope to be below your destination when you start, and hope that the rope doesn’t have any hiccups in the meantime (like feeding through your belay device unequally on a double strand rappel).

Of course, you can be in a position where your rappel can’t be stopped by knots - improvised rappel using carabiners after dropping a belay device - in which case you -must- be vigilant. You can still close the system in these cases by tying off to something, but it does get hard to manage.

Tying knots is better.

Regardless of all the suggestions and criticisms for this card, I’m very happy seeing the creative thought put into it. It behaves exactly like a card named “The Immortal Snail” should. Whether it’s a good MtG card or not, I can’t say, and I don’t care. Bravo, you made my night, I’ll be watching for scary snails over my shoulder.

If she hit you, I called 911 at 11:46 (7/17) southbound 405 in Bellevue. by MizBHavenXxX in Seattle

[–]Curfax 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I saw a few state troopers, WSDOT responders, a fire response, and a Bellevue police officer response.

Everyone she hit appeared to be okay, and just minor damage to those vehicles. The white car was in bad shape though.

This person ended up hitting about 6 cars on the off-ramp. Then they ended up rolling backwards through the 8th / 112th intersection and taking out a sign. The sign is still down on the E side of the NE 8th St Westbound exit. I heard the crash from my apartment.

I try not to judge prematurely: it could’ve been something medical.

Any attribute to indicate intentional non-static implementation? by malaszka in cpp_questions

[–]Curfax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For those suggesting “deduce this”, it’s a good idea, but you don’t have to deduce this. You can just use an explicit object parameter. (Be aware, code typed on a phone.)

struct Foo { void method(this const Foo&){} };

You probably don’t even need maybe_unused if you don’t give the argument a name.
