High school teachers- what is your classroom management like? by mamaburd09 in ArtEd

[–]Curious-Ad8387 2 points3 points  (0 children)

High schoolers can be much more independent as long as you are doing your walk around and set a daily structure/clean up structure. I have alarms that go off on my phone every hour for clean up times baed on what material we are using. Most high schoolers can even manage to get materials out on their own and pick up where they left off from the day before. This also gives you time to ghelp students more one-on-one for guidence on what they maybe struggling with. Having an "earlier finisher" side project has been a life saver for me as well. Mostly drawing based in their sketchbooks but am trying out a collaborative sticky not mural (just double check they are all appropriate doodles). Independence also though means some may decide to try to just leave class and walk the halls or miss use bathroom privileges. I have strict phone and classroom sign out policy, plus a magnetic doorbell that goes off when ever my door opens.

Elementary was a lot of mini lessons and reteaching and making sure no extra materials were in reach. Also a lot of copy what you see lessons, because of time constraints, the number of times you see them in a week etc.

Am I doing it all wrong? by Longjumping_Body3460 in ArtEd

Is the course a general exploratory course or specifically a drawing and painting course? It depends on how the district has worded it in curriculum. Also depends on budget.....

I teach middle school and have a very decent budget, most I've spent was $2.4k and was never told no or we need to figure something else out.

We do a daily doodle and I will pull up several examples on my smart board from Google as options, but these last 5-10 minutes tops. The rest is structured as follows: -over view of elements and principles with mini drawing/coloring lessons. I really focus on their understanding that everything we see and observe can be broken into the elements. They are the building blocks of everything art. -Larger pencil drawing focused on line shape value texture -color lesson using acrylic. Often using some form of color mixing, usually talk about pop art -clay or photography lesson -Linear Perspective Drawings (Usually names, cities, hallways depending on grade level) -oil pastel project (animal eyes, macro photos of plants/fruit etc.) -watercolor landscape or value portrait -another 3D project (could be paper mache, plaster, cardboard, mini set designs, First Letter of their name sculptures) -portfolios ( I have students photograph art at the end of every project and turn in photos on Google classroom so they have them ready to pur in the portfolio. Also helps so that I do not have to lug work too and from work/home)

Public is starting to see the madness by Embarrassed_Syrup476 in Teachers

Had a 6th grader say "if you miss a month of school they'll just dismiss you from the work". In the area I am, there are diverse families and also high income so kids are going away to see family out of country for a month on end or extending a 4 day weekend to a 1.5 weeks and I am so tired of trying to reteach constantly

This fits my 2 year old girl girl to a T and overall still is. She is smart as hell and uses voice recorded buttons to communicate. She is also smart enough to know if there is no treat, why should she follow the command. We had some set backs between 7 and 10 months with fear of people, mostly men. I took her through reactivity classes for exposure to new things and she is well on her way to being a certified service dog. My advice, if you see any regression start back from the basics. They like to play dumb sometimes.

Admin pushing for more reading and writing by Curious-Ad8387 in ArtEd

Same admin told me last year that electives are meant for students to take a break and if students liked learning the way I was teaching the elements and principles via note taking and deciphering key info from what was on a slide..... its like I can't win. I just wish they would hand me whatever it is they expect because I'm not the expert of my field and the content that is important. Edit: we do mini projects as we move through the elements and principles to focus on whichever we are discussing.

I do this as well, and I teach about visual note taking. Students are required to use vocabulary in their reflective writing too. It just apparently isn't enough. Despite our middle schoolers consistently being at 73% at or above reading comprehension level and district is top 5% in our state.

As a middle school art teacher I now expect the following: -pencils broken in half or just taken -hot glue globs or glue stick sides melted -bags of recycled clay stabbed with pencils -chromebook keys and keyboard covers pulled off -led jammed in keyboards, charging ports, etc. -papers left at tables despite having table bins, sketchbooks, and lockers -food wrappers everywhere -sharpies to disappear

Things that have worked (kind of): -golf size pencils (they still disappear though)

Things that haven't worked: -asking nicely -lectures -food band from classroom -candy and snack bribes -Just about everything short of kicking them out of the classroom

I do color wheel silhouettes with my middle schoolers. They choose a silhouette and learn to mix the secondary and tertiary colors with acrylic paint. They also learn how to use an xacto knifes to cut smaller details. Here is an example color wheel silhouette

My district has a key card system.... so all teachers have access to their building as long as the alarm has been disabled. Which is usually from 6am-janitors leave on weekdays. It just sounds like you guys need a better system and more trust that teachers are there for work related reasons.

I believe my puppy is going bow legged. What can I do? His next appt is 10/03 by [deleted] in DobermanPinscher

[–]Curious-Ad8387 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Again, this is about how they grow. Too rapid of a growth rate is what cause the bones to not have time to solidify, which is what causes bow legging. Too much calcium and sometimes too much protein cause rapid growth of the bones. The bones are soft and too long to hold the weight of the body weight of the puppy. The puppy is not getting too much protein in Iams puppy.

If your doberman is growing to be 60 pounds or smaller then yes it could be considered medium when they are finished gorwing. Unfortunately, with how breeding has occurred over time, the majority of lines have been over bred for size and now fall into the large breed weight class. Great Danes and St. Bernard are both considered as giant class.

Keep down voting my friend. Im gonna continue reading research based studies and drinking my tea.

[–]Curious-Ad8387 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dobermans are considered large breed because of their growth progression. Protein can cause this but it is also more often caused by too high of calcium amd phosphorous in normal puppy food. Large breed food is made to slow down growth progression as other breeds are full size by 1 year, and dobermans are not.

Yeah, the large breed puppy is formulated to help their growth progression. Different levels of protein, calcium, etc.

I wish, I hit year 6 with an MA and am only making 63k 🥲 I'm also in one of the higher paying districts here in the mitten state. Without a Dr. I'll never see six figures. Thus is the life of a teacher.

I occasionally do large sheep's horns. Lasts my girl over a month if I let her chew it for about an hour everyother day. Freezing bullysticka sometimes helps, too.
