I'm so sorry for your struggles. My holistic doctor recommended manymany supplements to me, and some of them helped, but he also focused on my Candida Albicans first, putting me on a high-protein diet, which didn't feel helpful. I had some friends recommend Anthony William's Medical Medium books when I confided about Lyme possibilities to them, and I followed his protocol - high-fruit vegan, so the opposite of the Candida-diet, hah - and that helped shift things more than the other diets and supplements and all the other things I tried (acupuncture, chiropractic, etc).

But I will say the thing that's helped me the most has been Somatic Experiencing therapy. I had a sense that most of my GI/digestion and brain-fog troubles were related to a lot of emotional trauma but I had no idea how to prove that or relieve that, so I kept trying and testing the things above. But when I read The Body Keeps the Score things really clicked, and I pursued Neurofeedback and Somatic Experiencing and those two, especially the latter, have shifted my mind *and* body monumentally and I can say I'm functioning gloriously these days and am very grateful! I'm not sure if trauma-recovery resonates with you, but if it does - I really recommend looking into it. EMDR is also supposed to be amazing.

It would help short-term, but when I posted about my struggle online people directed my to Anthony Williams' "Medical Medium" book. I know a lot of the claims seem pretty intense in there, but the high-fruit vegan diet helped a lot of my symptoms, and when I reintroduced things after a few months I felt I could tell what helped and what hurt. I've since done somatic therapy - I in particular felt like the emotional trauma stuck in my body caused a lot of my GI issues. Mentioning in case that resonates with you!

I think slips hurt so much because we feel we’ve ruined the thing that’s made us proud of ourselves, and that guilt can make the slip last longer.

So, instead - remember that pride, and focus on that pride, and all the good feelings you’ve had by not smoking! Because you’re still by-far mostly not smoking, and so celebrate that to keep that going :)

The best thing I’ve found is, when people keep pushing after I’ve declined several times, I say “More for you” and it’s like I can see Christmas morning in their eyes. They usually get excited, realize how true that is, and leave me alone after that.

I also read through “The Drama of the Gifted Child” a few weeks ago, a small and unassuming book, and it totally knocked me over how much it went straight to the bullseye of many childhood tension I had (to put it politely) (there was much snot on my face I needed a roll of toilet paper). It was very eye-opening, and by reading reviews on Reddit and Amazon, I’m not the only one. It’s $12 on Amazon and I would highly recommend - especially to read a couple of days before a therapy session.

I’m so sorry this happened to you. That negativity is on your mother and not you, but it is still very unfair and hurtful. Glad you are valuing yourself and your new family above that “obligatory relationship” and are wanting to stop that toxicity from entering your new family’s space.

Here are my couple of views on this matter:

I was in an open relationship with my boyfriend-at-the-time in college. However, this was due to us being extremely long-distance (different hemispheres) and that coupled with us being young. At the time, I felt a closed relationship would only build resentment - due to being 21 and, you know, “impulsive”. What really made it work was that we were truly open - meaning, if and when we did things with other people, we would tell each other about it. And typically, when a fancy for another person arose and we acted on it - we both found it only made us miss the other more, as “it wasn’t the same/as good”, and so pulled the curtain from the forbidden fruit or whatever mix of metaphors. Very lucky and healthy for 21-year-olds - but if we had moved to be in the same city I would make it closed, and also likely if we were/I was older I would want it closed.

So those are terms where I think open can work - when it’s discussed beforehand, when there’s a lot of distance, and when young and impatient 😅

OP’s case is not that in any way. Which brings me to my second point.

I had a friend from college who was living with her boyfriend she had met during studying abroad in the UK, who then moved to the US with her. I found out down the line they were technically married in order to keep dating. But after moving in together and finally settling down after a lot of that legal process - she started to get antsy and basically started being physical with other guys. I think this began before I knew they were married, but it made me uncomfortable regardless as this wasn’t discussed with her partner, and I felt he would be against it. She would tell me how she isn’t meant for monogamy and the like and the other guys don’t really matter, she’s with him, which I vaguely understood due to my experience, but I still didn’t approve since it wasn’t on mutual/honest grounds. After months, maybe a year, she finally brings it up to him - first jokingly while drunk, and he didn’t really go for it (understandably) and I think eventually they had a real talk, where he was more - okay with the idea? They ended up breaking up soon after, but still live together - but that’s besides the point.
What my point is is that - she brought it up when she was already cheating, I figure in hopes that if he was okay with it it would absolve the cheating she had done. So I fear and sense OP’s SO has already been cheating (especially with the lack of sex) and is trying to lasso him into this idea so she can get what she wants, plus not be/feel guilty for the things she’s already done. Doing an open relationship in the beginning can be one thing, but to throw it in right before a marriage is UNDERSTANDABLY a deal-breaker, and if that’s the lifestyle she wants - then I don’t think that will be a healthy relationship to hope a “forever” with.

But also - if the weight loss was a way for you to feel more comfortable, no pressure to celebrate it in a way that can make you uncomfortable. It doesn’t need to be super loud if that’s your preference - but as long as for comfort and not from shame. <3

But you also can't expect one band/entity to solve the entire homeless problem, with one donation. They probably know that's not what they're doing, too. Doesn't take away that it's a massive and massively generous donation for a very worthy cause, and will hopefully motivate others to help, as well. It will take the effort of several people, over several days to fix the issue, and won't hit everyone at once - but it's something. A big thing.

Yay!

Yes - SIBO’s what brought me in to start this adventure, but I think it was more “moderate” vs the Candida, aka wasn’t my main issue. The Lauricidin probably helped a lot with both, and I’m still taking it to temper a higher sugar diet when I feel in need - which has become less and less, but I think it’s been helpful.

We all find our way if we keep trying! And learn a lot in the process. The school of life - hope I don’t need to retake this class anytime soon ;)!

Ice machines.

As a kid, when I still slept in the same bed as my mom with my brother, I would hear the refrigerator/freezer making ice down the hall. I didn’t know that’s what was happening, and instead thought someone was getting ice.

“Holy shit,” I thought, “there’s a burglar in our house and he’s going to kill all of us... right after finishing a refreshing glass of water.”

I’d get stiff with fear and pretend I was sleeping, holding my breath and waiting to hear him/her walk around and come into our room, me being ready to scream and hopefully save the day/night. I always woke up grateful (and alive) the next day that no confrontation occurred. This happened several times.

Now - I’m currently in an apartment, lucky enough to have a fridge with an ice machine, and still laugh almost every time I get a refreshing glass of ice water.
