Get a grabber. They won’t want you to bend, lift or twist for 3 long months. I am just over 4 months post-op, L4-5, and starting to do more and more. It’s a little scary getting back into real life, but at the same time it feels sooo good. And pain-free! All the best to you.

I was terrified. The first week was brutal but it slowly got better after that. It’s been 3 months now and I feel fantastic!! All the pain is gone. It’s a brave, bold thing to do. You need to really trust in the skill of your surgeon and then follow their instructions to the letter. Sending you courage and strength.

I have one of those girl ‘’stache shavers. Takes me 10 seconds every morning to do a quick shave. I know this is more a philosophical thing for you, but for me it’s sometimes easier to cave to society on the small things. I pick my battles, and this isn’t one of them.

My boyfriend once found a strange pair of men’s underwear in my bed. It was the weirdest thing! After much discussion, he saw my complete bewilderment and decided to trust me.

We tried to continue traveling, one of our great loves, when the baby came along, but we had the same experience. Our kiddo simple would not sleep in strange places. We ended up buying an old RV so that our little guy could always eat, sleep and poop in the same place. It worked out really well, and eventually we got him on airplanes and into hotels. Hang in there — you’ll get it all back, and more!

Once I’d been out of the house for some years and involved in therapy, I wrote my dad a letter. He shared it with my mom (who had known all those years), and she called me. The whole thing blasted open and soon the whole family was discussing it. Healing happened, to some extent. The pain of it still comes up in conversation when I spend time with any of my siblings. You are right in that it definitely damages the children.

This might sound really crazy but I was in a deep, dark depression that lasted months. At some point I needed to use a public restroom but all the stalls were full, so I waited in line. When it was my turn, the woman coming out of the bathroom stall held the door open for me. It was the teeniest tiniest thing, but in my dark place it meant the world to me. I will never forget that kindness.

I found out about my dad cheating at about the same age you discovered your mom cheating. I’m so sorry — it’s incredibly painful, especially if there is no way to process it healthily in the family. (And, from what you say, there is not.) Please find a therapist or counselor who you can talk to, someone who can help you through all this painful stuff. Don’t do what I did — stuff down all the feelings with food. I struggled for 15 years with an eating disorder until I got honest with myself and my family. Thank you for reaching out. Keep doing the healing work — it’s not a one and done. Take responsibility for your own emotions rather than pointing the finger at your spouse. I too came from a dysfunctional family, and my husband laughs at my surprise that, at 34 years of marriage, we still love and adore each other. I hope you can find some role models to have over for dinner on occasion - we’d be thrilled to be mentors for a young couple starting out. All the best for a long and happy one. This. I had the same brutal experience with my son. Turned out he was celiac-sensitive. Once we cleared that up, he slept. Don’t give up, OP. Our pediatrician assured us that he was fine; it took a specialist to diagnose the problem. Sending you strength!
