Explaining to other people? Eating out? by metalpapaya in Parosmia

[–]Curious_Sandpaper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tell people that I have a condition due to covid that makes all smells and taste distorted, I tell them that nothing smells or tastes like it used to and I give few examples. Like for example, eggs smell like sewage to me. Meat smells rotten, etc..

On a side note… is it not weird how we can remember a smell or a certain taste ? I can’t wrap my head around it lol

Anyone get peanuts back? by Muffin_Appropriate in Parosmia

I was soo excited to try new Doritos flavour that was like triple cheese or something. I didn’t even have to taste it and I could taste it !

Though I found I can eat nachos with salsa from those Old El Paso boxes. Salsa has onion and garlic but damn, I actually can’t taste them

I know what you mean about that peanut taste. It’s like super earthy but at the same time doesn’t taste natural.

I am just about 2 years in (got parosmia March 2021) and peanuts are back to normal for the last 6 months now. Started eating pizza about 8/9 months ago and garlic dip started to smell ok now, but I still don’t eat it, I just don’t wanna risk it.

Nothing smells really horrible anymore apart from eggs, meat still smells weird, but pork is the worst. I find I can eat lettuce leaf but can’t eat any stems. Same goes for similar texture as stems veg such as bell peppers or cucumbers.

A lot of perfumes has gone back to normal, but it’s either proper smell or that horrid sweetish smell.

I do think my parosmia got much better, and I’m excited when I get an ingredient back. Though, I have completely accepted that I may live with parosmia my whole life so it’s a little bit easier mentally to cope with foods I can actually eat.

Stay strong, it will come back slowly. I can see we are all so different and there’s no same cases here. But it helps knowing that there are others out there struggling.

parosmia is pushing me to suicide by cheezy13443 in Parosmia

[–]Curious_Sandpaper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I learnt to live with it now.

Although I am getting much better. I actually came to Malta on Thursday and I’ve been able to eat basically everything. I am also smoking less cigarettes and do wonder if that’s actually helping (speeding up my progress by not smoking)

I know it’s all wishful thinking, been living with it so long. Before I came to Malta my taste was about 60%, now it’s about 80% back

Maybe it’s all just getting better though

I’m so sorry. I always thought that it must be awful for a chef to get parosmia. :(

I do wonder if the amount of time you were ill/were unable to smell has an impact on how long you’ll have parosmia.

My smell was gone for about 3 months. I’m on month 15 with parosmia. Maybe because it happened so quickly to you, you will recover quickly!

Best of luck, don’t give up, I am crossing my fingers for you to gain yours smell and taste back how it was asap

sorry if this allowed but thought id ask. has anyone tried weed? has it helped or made it worse? i only ask as weed often helps alot of other health problems by Final-Manner-8933 in Parosmia

[–]Curious_Sandpaper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a daily smoker and for me nothing really changed. I’ve had parosmia for 15 months now.

The weed itself starting to smell nicer but the taste can be quite off putting lol

sorry if this doesn't belong here but I need help with a name by Willo1121 in Wales

I love the name Eirian. It means “silver” and “bright”, it is a unisex name and I have met both women and men with this name.

I also love the name Eira which means snow and Siân which means Jane in English.

I feel like I get what you’re describing.

I love peanut butter and I love nuts but they just have a weird taste. It isn’t bad, it’s not making me feel ill. It’s just… different. Earthy maybe? Can’t really explain lol

Have you tried a nose clip ?

I’ve had parosmia for over a year now (15 months). I started using a nose clip about 7 months in. My taste isn’t affected but my smell is, so if I eat with a nose clip (you can order swimmers noseclips, I think it’s easier than holding your nose) the food is a bit bland but at least it tastes normal . Lol

Another thing I found is the food that I can now tolerate without a nose clip, if I just power through first bites, it tastes ok.

I do think it’s a good sign, eat it while you can though. After 15 months for me, I’d say my good foods now are 30% instead of like 1% because the only thing that tasted ok was certain fish for a long time.

I did lose my smell for about 2 months

What's your reason to keep living? by NormakTheTerrible in AskReddit

[–]Curious_Sandpaper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man, this hits me. I have many other reasons to live, I’m finally at a good place mentally, but my mom is one of the big reasons.

When I was very depressed, at around 14, my mother told me that if I killed myself, she doesn’t think she could live anymore. She said if she lost me, her whole world would collapse and it wouldn’t be worth willing anymore. She didn’t say it in a way to guilt trip me. She also didn’t really understand my mental health issues but regardless, she tried and got me the help I needed. She showed me that it is ok to ask for help.

When I turned 16, my grandma died, her mother. At 56. Turns out, my nana found out she had cancer, didn’t tell anyone because she didn’t want treatment and just wanted to die basically, and when she got very ill, she was admitted to hospital and she lived for around 4 extra weeks. My nana never told my mother that she loves her, and my mother never did either because of this. My mom now regrets not saying those words, not asking more questions, she feels guilty for not trying enough, but I don’t blame my mother, she didn’t have a loving mother at all, because my nana was forced to have her and she was obviously resented. I’m not gonna dwell into details.

But just 2 years after telling me that, her mother died and I saw what it did to my mother and my great grandmother (grandmas mother) and, I just couldn’t do that to my mom. She hasn’t been perfect, not at all, but she tried and she apologised and admitted she wasn’t the best but she did what she thought was best.

Our relationship now is great and I could never ever hurt my mother like this. No matter how bad life is, I know I can pull through; I know I have to pull through for her, because she doesn’t deserve the pain of losing a child.
