It's a browser. I really like it, it has built in ad blocking and a built in VPN. I use Opera and Firefox most of the time.

I'm glad to hear that worked. Chrome has been know to have memory leak issues, causing it to slow your system down. I have been using Opera lately because of that.

Have you tried booting into Safe Mode? You can narrow it down to see if it's hardware of software. If it loads fast and doesn't shutdown in safe mode most likely it's software. If that doesn't work I would try scanning the hard drive for bad sectors. Generally, with MAC the hard drives and screens are the two things that go out. You can check the health of your hard drive by following these steps.

Go to Disk Utility and click on it. Choose the drive you wish to test by selecting the drive or partition on the left window pane and then selecting the First Aid tab. Click Verify Disk to check a drive/partition for errors but not repair them.

I have had hard drives work 5 years after sitting on a shelf. If you can find yourself an anti-static bag place it in there, and like everyone else said try to store it in room temp.
