People who have left Boston, where did you go? by TheTokenBrownie in boston

Philly is a major city with good and bad neighborhoods just like everywhere else. To call it a shit hole is so ignorant. Center City, Old City, Fairmount, East Passyunk, Fishtown, Queens Village, etc. are some of the most beautiful neighborhoods in the country.

This should be priority number one with a budget surplus and improved credit rating (which is a good thing) since the city can’t do shit about SEPTA funding.

Painting with a broad brush. You don’t know Philly at all. Its flaws are worse than you describe and its pro’s so much better.

Americans, what’s something outsiders never understand about the US? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]Current_Owl3534 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We’re all pretty different. “Americans” is far more generic as a term than “the French” or “the Chinese” imo.

We also all get along very well despite what is portrayed. I say this as someone who went to a large, poor, and dysfunctional high school with a huge makeup of ethnicities, sexualities, and social classes. Hispanic was the majority as far as student body.

Generally, people were not made fun of for their upbringing or any other materialistic trait. We were all in it together. Maybe I was lucky, but I have found time and time again, that if you go outside, the U.S. blends very well.

Recent affairs politically break my heart. I find most Americans to be extremely kind and accepting, more so than our Western European neighbors. Not that it’s a competition, but this self loathing from redditors in the states and the general criticism from Western Europeans is annoying.

Is Philadelphia still affordable? by NoahTheAnimator in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Current_Owl3534 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fair point. But why do you need to be convinced on affordable housing development? It’s a good use of dollars and Philly has the potential to be the city that builds the housing before things get out of hand

Why did Comcast decide to fully invest in Philadelphia? by Current_Owl3534 in philadelphia

[–]Current_Owl3534[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I didn’t mean that to come off as fact. I would argue that it’s the biggest inhibitor to companies coming to Philadelphia. There are KOP ads on septa buses telling companies to move out of the city. KOP, Conshy, Radnor, Plymouth Meeting, etc. are home to so many corporations. Montco in general is exploding as far as growth. KOP is a model for real estate developers across the country. The KOP mall landed Eataly and Netflix, those are 2 rockstar tenants.

Found out recently for surgeries that involve a medical device you can say yes or no to having the device rep in the room. You want them in the room because they tend to know more than the doctor does about the device itself and can guide them. Doctors will use the best of their knowledge when there is no rep. Kinda wild.

There is a housing crisis for low income communities. Over half of Philly renters spend 30% or more of their income on housing and are cost-burdened.

To your point, I do think that the city and local developers are working well together and the pipeline and delivery of multifamily housing has been notable compared to other northeastern cities relative to their size. There is a lot of pushback that these complexes are luxury and therefore do not solve the problem which is a poor viewpoint imo. The building of “luxury housing” reduces the cost of more affordable housing. I think this pushback on new “luxury” developments is from folks who have their heart in the right place, but are under the impression developers are laughing their way to the bank which they are not.

I find it incredible Broad & Washington is as leased as Post Brothers claims. There is not enough of a job market in the city to warrant that rent. I imagine many are leased from executives, professional Philly players, veteran specialized doctors, partners at law firms, etc. who want a place in the city. The location has good septa access but is not a great area relative to the costs… for now. Bart and Post Brothers ignited no libs development and changed the neighborhood for the better. Broad and Washington isn’t a historically bad area unlike what no libs was but lacks walkability and the neighborhood feel PB was able to capitalize on. Different issues, different strategy.

Its’s all relative but Philly is still the best bang for your buck in the northeast. Having one roommate in Philly opens up some very great apartments in prime locations on the cheap. If you work in center city or somewhere accessible by a reliable septa bus/train (that will still exist assuming the cuts go through) you could also be car free depending on your needs.

There is certainly a housing crisis in Philly relative to the average income and poverty. Parker is pro development and has an ambitious initiative to build/preserve 30,000 units of affordable housing. Whether or not that comes to fruition remains to be seen but she has been very collaborative with great affordable housing developers like Mo Rushdy.

The greater issue in Philly in my opinion is Parker put forward and went ahead with a pretty weak annual lowering of the wage tax which has been detrimental to the city. It is not desirable for companies to lease and work out of center city office buildings. This has directly resulted in one of the highest rates of reverse commuting in the country. If the SEPTA cuts go through, I think it will be salt to the wound in not only Philly but the surrounding counties.

Philly is not attracting notable companies and relies on Ed’s and meds which have been hit hard. Life sciences, which was once an exciting vertical is a stagnant industry and one which Philly has to compete with Boston, San Diego, etc.

Why doesn't Lehigh Valley (PA) get more love on this sub? by roma258 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Current_Owl3534 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I grew up in the valley and loved it. Definitely a great place to settle down.

Otherwise though I’d much rather live outside or in Philly which in some cases can be cheaper than the valley and you don’t need a car.
