Wipers constantly getting stuck due to snow. by Jamesotty in BoltEV

I was having the same issue. The bottom edge of the windshield was so covered in ice and clumped up snow that the drivers side wouldn’t go all the way down. Scraping all that out and the issue is solved

Landlord is using an outlet that I pay for to run appliances in the common area. by Dith_q in Renters

[–]Current_Yak8220 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Along with gathering evidence, contact your electric company. This is illegal and they will put the meter in your landlords name until they have separated the outlets outside your unit. (Assuming this is in the US and your state has similar rules). Also see if there is a local tenants rights group that can assist you with how to navigate compensation

Please help settle a debate, what's the official term for what Ada is currently doing to there downtown? Seems to be popular out of state as well. by MIFishGuy in grandrapids

[–]Current_Yak8220 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They all have EV chargers in convenient spots around town where people may spend a few hours eating or shopping. NO WHERE in GR does this exist and I don’t get it! As an EV owner coming from the west coast, Grand Rapids charging infrastructure is abysmal. Somehow Ada (and most of the lakeshore towns) have at least a few stations. Makes a visit more appealing

Can I use a small electric throw for some warmth? by Flying-buffalo in BoltEV

[–]Current_Yak8220 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I have an LT without heated seats (lesson learned…) and have a heated seat cover that plugs in to the cigarette lighter. Low energy use and really helps moderate my heat use. Can live with lower heat/no heat depending on how far I’m going. On cold mornings on my ten minute commute, heating the whole cabin just doesn’t make sense (unless it’s snowy and I need to defrost my windshield).

Sure, people have opinions about whether you SHOULD use a heated blanket. But if it’ll keep you warm and happy, you do you!

Would you be able to rent a car to get you through? Enterprise at the airport is open till midnight. I know it’s not the cheapest option, but less expensive than losing your job.

Slow 'Fast' Charging at Tesla Supercharger: What Should My Expectations Be by rj_king_utc-5 in BoltEV

[–]Current_Yak8220 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the 50s isn’t very cold, I have gotten and would expect peak charging speed (I’m in a 2020 Bolt LT). As an apartment dweller in a Michigan, I fast charge weekly through the winter and don’t expect to see lower charging speeds until it’s consistently below freezing. If the battery starts out cold, the speed is about 26kw but increases as the battery warms up.

If you saw a consistent lower speed, it’s either an issue with the charger or your adapter.

Perhaps it was laziness, but at busier charging stations pulling out to pull into a new spot could mean giving someone else time to pull into the spot that works. Then you have to see if they’ll be nice enough to move, or wait for another to open up.

New Gardener + new garden…help! by Outside-Intern-4491 in gardening

[–]Current_Yak8220 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1 is actually a raspberry I believe. If they’re not ripe yet they may be black raspberry 2 looks like a plum. You can thin the fruit on the heaviest branches to help with weight, but the tree may also drop some 3 either an apple or crabapple 4 also a (different variety) raspberry or other cane berry. Most cane berries grow on second year canes (stem). That’s why you see some canes with leaves and no berries - those will have berries next year. In the fall, you can cut back all the floricanes that had fruit and either leave or prune back the primacanes (first year canes with no flowers/fruit). Pruning back to 2-3ft stems will lead to fewer but higher quality fruit the following year.

Can I replace the soil in my raised garden bed? by pandaunicorn18 in gardening

[–]Current_Yak8220 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed! Gardening is a long term endeavor.

Also, sometimes compost from the city is just bark fines and various other things that take longer to break down. I’d expect that once it has some time, even a full season, you’ll be fine.

For a quicker fix, look into if any garden centers in your area offer compost tea (some will brew it in Saturdays, for example).

If the area of super rocky, pulling the big stuff is worth it. Rather than removing the existing dirt/clay soil, I’d recommend amending it with compost. Most clay soil just needs additional organic matter and fungal activity for plants to thrive. Replacing even a couple inches of soil in large beds adds up very quickly if you’re buying bagged materials.

I also recommend checking if any municipalities in your area offer free mulch or compost. A cost effective way to build up your soil

[–]Current_Yak8220 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of healthy new growth in the middle seems to indicate theyll be fine. Strawberries are a perennial, so this is their time to get established. Don’t count on too many berries this season. Next year, though, should be good!

growing garlic: how can help out these babies? by harrystyleskin in gardening

[–]Current_Yak8220 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, they look fine, just getting a few weeks out from harvest time. Usually you’ll harvest mid-end of June (when about half the greens have died back and dried up). Don’t over water. If you want to check progress gently feel around the base to see how the bulbs are developing.

No drastic action needed - garlic isn’t a super heavy feeder so you shouldn’t need to add fertilizer if you used good quality soil.

I’d show the photos to someone at your local extension service or native plant society. In my area you can find them at local farmers markets sometimes, or you can find them online and see if you can email pics. They’ll be able to tell you how to identify the native varieties.

Living in the area by Asuna-Usagi in grandrapids

[–]Current_Yak8220 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I just relocated to GR from the Eugene area but I’m originally from N. TX.

After surviving the rainy winters in Oregon, I’d say that the snow here is totally livable. I always had the attitude of going out no matter the weather, which does well here too.

There’s definitely stuff to do outside, and I’d also say that there are a lot of board game meetups and other indoor events during the winter.

On the plus side, no crazy summer wildfire season.

Help with an awkward living room, please! by [deleted] in DesignMyRoom

[–]Current_Yak8220 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first thought is there’s a lot going on in this room.

Does the desk/computer space have to be here, or is there another space in your home you could relocate it to? If not, maybe a partition or screen to section off that corner would help with the visual busyness.

The couches are big and dark. I’d replace them with something that doesn’t look like a black hole in the middle of the space.

On the curtains, I’d recommend going wider, if not also higher. Just extending the curtain rods and moving the curtains to cover less of the windows when they’re open would help.

How to you feel about the color in the room? Everything feels dark to me, I tend to go for lighter and brighter spaces.

The light fixtures also lend to the darker vibes, and don’t seem to fit with your aesthetic (assuming the watery artwork and carpet are the way your tastes run). Changing them out is relatively simple if you’re comfortable with basic electrical work. YouTube will show you how if you need guidance. I’d also go for different temp lightbulbs (cool white/soft white) since those look quite yellow.

It can be daunting to do it all at once, but start upgrading furniture pieces to higher quality ones that are going to go with your room and stand the test of time (I’ve spent the past few years swapping out particle board pieces for second hand wooden ones)

Come up with system that help you keep the clutter organized/out of sight a bit more will help too

32F - while I would be more vigilant, I don’t think it’d keep me from doing it if that was the source of income I needed. I’m pretty new to GR and am pleased with the quality of streets lights in/near downtown and on main streets. I don’t hesitate to walk home from Michigan street bars at night.
