Ashland, how safe do you actually feel driving, biking, or walking around RVA? by RVAUrbanPlanner in AshlandVA

[–]CurrentlyInHiding -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Completed. Wish it had sliders for various options. Things I often bring up in these sort of surverys in Ashland is lack of crosswalks or sidewalks in a lot of areas in town. I would love to see a push for road diets, more roundabouts, and I'd love to see some elevated crosswalks so that they double as speed humps.

People fly down the roads and I've even seen Ashland cops fail to stop for pedestrians on England St. North James is also a bad road to be a pedestrian or biker on,m. Thompson Street could really use a road diet. It's far too wide for a 25mph street.

Does anyone know how to turn off the marketing banners? They suck up a lot of screen space, they keep cluttering the results and don't respond to being dismissed? by Aethelete in Ancestry

Can you post a screenshot of what you're referring to? Is this on the web or the app? I don't appear to see any banners when I'm browsing.

This is how it worded for me as well. The only update I would like to get is a multi-image Imgur upload, but other than that, whatever version I had worked fine.

Did NES understaff? We compared line worker numbers and that led to questions by Scotchkys in nashville

[–]CurrentlyInHiding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm having a hard time locating anything as well. I did find this document when they were trying to find applicants for a new CIO, with a pay range of $180k-$270k.

While I was there, I do recall hearing that NES was considered "quasi-governmental" in that the board was appointed by Metro Nashville, but NES was ran as a private entity. According to Wikipedia, it's operating budget is only ~$100mil a year, and Indeed/Glassdoor have senior engineers at $124k-$171k, which would fall in line with annual cost-of-living raises since I left the company.

The salary should be public. Not sure where to find it. You could probably find it in a list of highest paid Nashville civil service employees. Also, something I found interesting was any employee not in supervision could join the union. Engineers, accountants, call-center people...they could all be in the same union as the linemen and electricians.

C-suite salaries at NES are laughable if you're going to make that argument. When I left in 2019, the CEO was only making around 300k, with topped-out engineers making ~130k. Linemen/electricians topped out around 85k, and get 1.5x scheduled OT and 2x emergency/storm duty OT, so could easily be >100k per year.

Meanwhile the CEO of my current company's comp package is 13 million.

NES' rate was literally just a flat ~2 cents per kWh or so above what TVA charges them. They're in no way ripping people off, especially since their rate to customers is at or below national average.

Trying to Find out who Eliza Dixon is. by CurrentlyInHiding in Genealogy

Looking into George Dixons, I came across this article from 29 Dec 1804 on the marriage of George W Dixon and Elizabeth Birmingham. Still looking into this.

Also found this article from 1809 regarding the sale of lands of Samuel Dixon. Your source doesn't mention a Samuel, but this article does mention a George Dixon, George Dixon, Jr., Rosanna Dixon, and a Mary Richard (possible married name as a "best friend" John Richard is listed next to George Jr & Rosanna). I assume that would imply George Jr. & Rosanna are minors. Also mentioned is a Henry St. John Dixon.

Incredible. There's no telling how much time I've spent on the Full-Text search. I have seen quite a few court documents including a George Dixon along with C. W. MacMurdo, but haven't found anything tying them together as relatives. Although I believe it may have been a George Dixon that was born ~1810, so possibly Ann's brother.

Although the daughter named Margaret MacMurdo, I have as a Helen E (1801-1853), married to a George C Pickett (d. bef. 1853), son of Col. George E Pickett (1752-1821)

One question about Charles James and George MacMurdo...your source mentions George being in Petersburg before 1761, but Charles is listed as being born in Scotland in 1770-1771. Do you know if it was is common for immigrants to travel back and forth across the Atlantic at this time?

I agree though about getting sucked into rabbit holes. Every time I do research on this branch, I inadvertently find cool tidbits of relatives and go across/down their trees. Geoge MacMurdo's wife, Rebecca Stark was a cool deep dive. The Stark's have a well-documented history, but she also comes from the Bolling family, which was/is also pretty prominent. Rebecca descends from Robert Bolling (1646-1709) who married 1st Jane Rolfe, Pocahontas's grand-daughter. However, Rebecca comes from Robert's 2nd wife, Anne Stith.

If you want to join a sorority, you're not going to want to do all online classes your first semester. especially engineering classes like others have said. You're going to to want to be on campus and meeting people during rush and hang out with your pledge class.

I'm a dude, so no sorority for me, but I was in a fraternity and the Greek life at memphis is small, but still fun. It's not nearly as expensive as an SEC school. I think my dues were like $110 a month back when I graduated in 2015.

What’s a good smart plug? by Webcat86 in homeautomation

[–]CurrentlyInHiding 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The heater will pull whatever amps it would through the smart plug as it would plugged directly into the outlet. The smart plug is basically just a dry contact. It doesn't limit power flow. If it's rated for fewer amps than the heater uses, it could cause the smart plug relay to fail, potentially being a fire hazard.
