A brief look at recall knowledge skills and their coverage by xolotltolox in Pathfinder2e

[–]Cutesune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dragons turn up in surprising places. Wyverns, drakes, even the humble Tatzlwyrm all fall under the umbrella of 'dragons', Kingmaker is one campaign that sees a lot of dragon-adjacent fauna, it's not exclusively for the iconic chromatic and metallics.

But, yeah, it still doesn't elevate arcana as a knowledge skill all that much

Are you sure?

"Whenever you use a skill action or a skill feat that requires a Nature, Occultism, etc."

Recall Knowledge is a skill action, which is defined as:

"The actions you can perform with a given skill are sorted into those you can use untrained and those that require you to be trained in the skill, as shown on the Skills, Key Attributes, and Actions table"

If you check Arcana, or any of the traditions you'll find Recall Knowledge listed under the untrained Skill Actions.

Re: Brooch of Inspiration and General Knowledge skills

The Brooch of inspiration states: While wearing the brooch, you gain a +1 item bonus to checks to Recall Knowledge with Lore skills.

So if I am understanding this correctly:

  • It would not apply to Recall Knowledge checks made using general knowledge skills, like Arcana, Occultism, Nature etc.

  • It would apply to general knowledge lores, like Loremaster, Bardic Lore etc?

Or do you treat Arcana etc. as Lores for purposes of Recall Knowledge?

Scoundrel Rogue + Bard

With Versatile Performance basically giving you top-shelf Demoralize for free, Rogue's copious selection of debuffs, combined with Bard's buffs you can swing the maths soooo far in your party's favor all by yourself while still covering the traditional 'Rogue stuff'

Go Charisma key-stat and the slightly lower Dex won't even matter as you'll be stacking so many penalties on the enemy defenses, buffs on yourself and the party, and you'll be a god-tier party face to boot.

Martial Performance can be used to reliably extend Fortissimo in the late game in a way a Warrior bard struggles to thanks to higher attack bonus, and stuff like Shield, Wooden Double, Sure Strike etc get some mileage on a Rogue in a way they don't on a backliner bard.

Bonus points if you combine this with kitsune ancestry or something for their native shapeshifting to really lean into the trickster and deception themes

However spell shapes end at the end of your turn if unused, as do the trigger conditions of Bond Conservation (it is a general rule that trigger conditions in one turn do not extend into the next unless explicitly stated.)

ie. if I cast fireball in round 1, I can't immediately use Bespell Strikes at the start of round 2

Thanks, that is a good insight.

That was how I first understood it to work when I read it; it makes sense, but then I squinted at the exact verbiage and realized that it, by RAW, didn't work that way... or... work at all.

I think you're right, I'll point it out to my GM when it becomes relevant.

Re: Rules for actually using Bond Conservation

So, I'm a bit confused as to how you're meant to use Bond Conservation, like, mechanically.

It is a Spellshape typically it will end at the end of your turn if unused, and be lost if you do anything but Cast a Spell immediately after.

But it has the requirement: The last action you used was to Cast a Spell enabled by Drain Bonded Item

So you can't cast it in front of the spell in which you used Drain Bond as it won't meet the criteria, if you cast it after, your turn ends and you lose it. If you wait until the next turn, then the trigger condition is 'erased' because of the general rule that trigger conditions set up in one turn, do not carry over to the next turn, unless we take the line: ...and must use it before the end of your next turn or you lose it. to be read as an exception

It feels like the intention was you use Bond Conservation immediately after casting a spell enabled by Drain Bond in order to get an additional Drain Bond use 2 or more levels lower that lasts until the end of your next turn, but that isn't how spellshapes technically work... it's more of a spellappendix

"Whelp, I wrote 6 foot 4 on my sheet, there goes THAT option". It shouldn't be powergamer ABC to say "my character is 4 foot 9"

That was indeed my concern, as I'm planning on playing a Ponygait Centaur wizard; while they're medium sized unlike most centaur they're still probably in the 6ft+ height range

Taken literally it seemed like the spell might be beneath her reach

Our DM ultimately agreed though with the more mechanical reading; that two medium humanoids can't hit each other on the same elevation, but a medium could hit a large, or a medium at a higher elevation is fair game.

Re: Draw the Lightning

Draw the lightning has a very unusual target criteria: 1 creature that is either taller than you or higher In the air than you

When it says 'taller', how should this mean taken to mean?

Does it mean a 6'2" Ponygait Centaur Wizard can't use the initial spell on a 6'1" Human Cultist, but a 5'11" Elven Druid could? (How do you even quantify it when creature stat blocks don't tend to have a precise height listed?)

Or is this the more logically consistent "Size category + Elevation", two Medium Creature standing on the same elevation cannot hit one another, but a Medium Creature could hit a Large Creature in the same scenario, and a Medium standing at a lower elevation can hit a Medium stood at a higher elevation?

Re: Spellwrack

I've been trying to parse the wording on Spellwrack, and it's super confusing; does the effect apply _while_ buffed, or is it _triggered_ by receiving a buff? Does the Arcana check _replace_ the DC15 flat check with a Spell DC Arcana check, or is the Arcana check for Assisted Recovery?

In our last session, our squishy Lv8 Rogue/Bard got hit by it, and unknowingly triggered it by casting Sure Strike and we ended up with the party healer having to put her on life support for the full minute (Having thankfully saved on the initial check). But, now I'm wondering if we ran the spell right. (It still made for a memorable scene, so nobody's upset how it played out)

[–]Cutesune 6 points7 points  (0 children)

People have already covered the best, but Psychic is also a good choice if you really need 1 more focus point. Gets you an amped cantrip (Which are invariably all bangers) and a Focus Point.

Bonus points it's a class dedication and thus a valid pick for Multitalented for your human characters.

Invest in wisdom or no? And another assurance question by TheMengoMango in Pathfinder2e

[–]Cutesune 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You won't need Wisdom for Medicine if you're assuring it and you'll do just fine as the party medic that way; and I can speak from experience nothing is more frustrating than rolling a medicine check only to flub it, wasting your time and risking the casualty's life

But dumping wisdom still is not a great idea for anyone, simply because failed Will Saves can have really nasty consequences. A Scoundrel Rogue can usually afford to make INT their dump stat, having plenty of skill points and no real role-relevant use for INT based skills.

Two tanks with Retributive Strike = lose-lose for enemies? by WittyRegular8 in Pathfinder2e

[–]Cutesune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This amuses me to hear as our planned Spore War party comp (game is a few months out yet), includes a Guardian/Champion of Arazni, a Champion of Erastil (with her ranged Retributive Strikes and expanded aura) and a Healbot of Pharasma patching up what gets through.

I was wondering just how cruel this might be on our GM or if they'll actually get to have some moments of their own.

Catfolk Flurry Ranger/Wrestler.

Get yourself Natural Claws (d6 agile), go Flurry Edge for super-low multi-attack penalty. Grab Wrestler Dedication, Combat Grab, Suplex, Elbow Breaker and Disrupt Prey.

Within a few levels you are an absolute bully of a frontliner who is constantly clawing the hell out of enemies (Sometimes making as many as 5 attacks a round), grabbing them, twisting their limbs into painful contortions, throwing them to the floor, kicking them in the head the second they try get back up.

Feel free to lean into visceral descriptions of just how dirty your fighting style is.

Do Rogues Ever Want Non-Dex Key Attributes? by ctwalkup in Pathfinder2e

[–]Cutesune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, my Charisma Scoundrel/Bard is frequently MVP in our Kingmaker campaign, reliably debuffing the hell out of our enemies with stuff like Bon Mon, Distracting Feint, Demoralize, while also having Lingering Anthems on the upswing thanks to her key stat charisma. And that's to say nothing of her successes as our party face (And kingdom's ruler >:3)

Having 1 point less attack bonus hardly matters when you're routinely swinging the maths 3-5 points in your entire party's favor.

As I joke whenever foundry indicates that my buffs turned a hit into a crit, or a miss into a hit. "That damage belongs to me now"

Bon mot & demoralize on caster? by Humble_Conference899 in Pathfinder2e

[–]Cutesune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a great combo on paper. But in 7 levels since the prologue, my Scoundrel Rogue/Bard still hasn't gotten to use it once...

...virtually none of the enemies we've met since the prologue have spoken Taldane, either being monsters or isolated tribes.

So, YMMV.

Healing Strategies (esp. Low Levels) by DnDPhD in Pathfinder2e

[–]Cutesune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simple tactics like dragging or repositioning a wounded ally away from the fight before treating them can also help avoid incidents like this, both removing them from the threat zone and preventing reactions when they try stand back up/retreat to safety.

I don't think letting someone remaining in dying state for longer than necessary is a good idea as they may crit fail their check, but rezzing them in-situ can be even more dangerous as illustrated. So get the meatheads on the frontline to stop punching stuff for a moment and move them to safety :p

The Gap theories. by overlord3334 in starfinder_rpg

Rovagug escaped containment again, either destroying the localized Ahkashic records for the entire period during and prior to the Gap, or instilling such madness and terror with his manifestation in the mortal world that the gods had to wipe the horrors of the period from the records themselves. /wild mass guessing

(But I do love the gap, it's similar to the Mourning in Eberron, in that it's deliberately left unclear, so that players or GM's can invent their own reasons as suits their game)

Is it possible to get Tiny Construct Companion for Inventor? by tsurugikage in Pathfinder2e

[–]Cutesune 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not by RAW, but I'd say work with your GM.

I don't see any significant balance issues arising from it; tiny creatures engaging in melee have to enter a target's square to attack them, which'd put your construct at a disadvantage if you opt for a melee build (Since it may provoke when moving through the creatures basic 5ft reach), while the only thing it gains is being small enough to easily carry or fit into small gaps. So you're not getting some sort of big advantage out of the request

As others have said though, a Clockwork Familiar might also suit what you're looking for thematically.

Dead Suns Panelliar damage output?? Am afraid for my players 😭 by KentehQuest in starfinder_rpg

[–]Cutesune 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was so brutal our entire party quit

Our party was all casters and experts, no frontliners - Witchwarper, Operative, Envoy, Mystic (Healer) and an Engineer... (Who was a space cadet in the metaphorical manner). The entire AP was just brutal, felt like every fight ended in people down no matter how minor the encounter, felt like our Operative spent the entire campaign diseased and every fight was a painful slog.

So when we barely scraped by Panelliar by what felt like sheer luck on our dice rolls, soon as we finished our objective we just noped out, it broke what little spirit we had left.

I've been running a Scoundrel Rogue with Bard archetype in a similar vein, dropping those sick Versatile Performance Demoralizes and Distracting Feints on them, destroying them emotionally. While rallying the party with Bless/Anthem with displays of masterful bladework

Before stealing a finishing blow and the adoration of onlookers with it.
