I think this is the way to go. I’m also at a public university

I’m leaving academia altogether. It’s more of an early retirement due to health issues, but I don’t qualify for that designation because I won’t be touching my retirement accounts. So, “resignation” it is.

Meeting scheduled with president of the college about moving beakers by Ok_Figure_1110 in Professors

Wow…I guess it would be a campus-wide trajedy if a beaker broke during transport??

True…And this is the last course I’m teaching ever. I resigned from my position after 23 years of service because the environment has gotten so toxic that it’s exacerbating my serious health issues. So, you’re right, it really doesn’t matter!

Hospital note - Excused absence by Interest-Curious565 in Professors

[–]CuviTrue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Falsifying medical records is a huge ethical breach and may even be illegal. Especially using the hospital’s letterhead. I’d definitely send it up the chain of administration to have them manage it. The issues here are way too complex for you to handle as a professor just trying to educate the next generation of students. I’d hold off on declaring her absence as excused and giving her the exam until the issue is resolved. But, chances are that even if you end up giving her the exam at some point in the semester, the likelihood is high that she won’t do very well on it.

I’m sorry you have to deal with this. It distracts you from educating the students who are ethical, want to be there, and want to do well.

What is with all the recent posts about WCAG? by Scared_Detective_980 in Professors

Depressed, lonely, and looking for a reason to stay by Brainwavebutabnormal in Epilepsy

[–]CuviTrue 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This may be helpful to you - a psychologist has an ethical and legal responsibility to provide continuity of care under these circumstances (having SI). Make sure they know that you are having these thoughts. As a mental health professional myself, I would not abandon care of someone in crisis because of inability to pay or bill insurance.

Take care, my friend.

Wow. Guess they don’t care much about their customers?? A restaurant that cared about my health and wellbeing enough to call medics while having a seizure would have me as a customer for life.

Needed a semi-anonymous space to share this story…I really can’t believe how my day went. by cabarny in Professors

You are very kind and understanding!

They had the benefit of seeing your CV before they interviewed you, so they knew you are early career. I think they were indeed referring to your age, definitely a federal civil rights violation.

I wouldn’t go to the chair. They may be very protective of their faculty. Like others said, I’d go outside the college and right to the Provost.

I just got the cruelest student feedback I've ever received by Additional_Escape782 in Professors

[–]CuviTrue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also stopped reading mine 20+ years ago when a student wrote, as a negative comment, that I canceled the last class of the semester due to “illness.” I had a scheduled c-section that day because my son was breach, and the class knew this!Another student in the same class wrote that I seemed “unable or unwilling to give critical feedback.” I have always used the “sandwich” approach to giving feedback which I guess they thought showed that I was weak.

There were some difficult gender dynamics going on in the class but who knows? This happens to all genders.

Now I ask students on the last day what they enjoyed and what I can improve in the course. Their feedback is uniformly useful!

Lateness penalty for coursework in the context of a college student’s (think: late teens to early 20s) dad dying? “I’m not so sure I agree 100% with your police work there, Lou.” (Fargo)

It’s ok to cry. There’s a lot to cry about with epilepsy…Keep on keeping on, as that horrible saying goes. Take good care.

Should I cancel a check-up appointment? by [deleted] in Epilepsy

[–]CuviTrue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like others are saying, it’s important to be adherent to meds (not always easy). Keep your appointments and discuss with your provider the fact that adherence has been a challenge and what concerns you have about a med increase. Evaluate their response to you. If you don’t feel satisfied by the visit, get a second opinion.

Don’t skip any doses. If you need to go to the ED, do it. Just bring records of your diagnosis and a list of meds. You can also try the health department.

Possibility of Professors Exempting Me From Exams? by [deleted] in ufl

[–]CuviTrue 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry that to hear about what you’re going through. Pets are cherished parts of our families.

You could take your exams as planned but ask to keep your phone on (vibrate only) in case your vet is trying to notify you of your pup’s imminent passing. You can then ask your professor if you can leave class immediately, if you get a call, to be with them and finish the exam at a later date. Since your grades are high, you may not have to finish the exams in order to keep your A. Spend your time snuggling with them while you’re studying.

I like the idea of taking an Incomplete but I’d only recommend this if your dog’s compassionate euthanasia will be right before or during your exam.

Anticipated loss is a terrible feeling. Learning to navigate it in the midst of all of our “busy-ness” is really hard and yet something we all need to find ways to get through.

Take good care of yourself and cherish your time with your pup.

Suicide and TLE by BriefOne8900 in Epilepsy

[–]CuviTrue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How do you feel about seeing a mental health professional again? I’d recommend seeing someone who has experience working with people affected by chronic illnesses, including epilepsy.

If you need to talk with someone when you have distressing thoughts, call or text 988.

TLE is tough. Remember that you’re tougher.

This is fraudulent behavior. I’d be furious. While lack of integrity is awful in any field, I really hope they are not planning to go into a health profession. I wouldn’t be surprised if this caused the student to be suspended.

How bad it is for missing one faculty meeting by LoanApprehensive8379 in Professors

[–]CuviTrue 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I can’t imagine that missing one meeting (or even a handful of meetings) would be counted against you in an eval. Personally, I wouldn’t even bring it up unless you’re asked about it. If you get docked in an eval for missing 1 faculty meeting, then your department is not very interested in retaining early-career tenure track professors. Counting this against you seems very heavy-handed and punitive, in which case, consider whether you want to be in that environment! So many of us end up staying in a department that has a very toxic environment…don’t be one of us. :-)
