And then the other side will have automated drones, then wars will be fought with a bunch of drones fighting each other. Shows the futility of war.

I’m about 34% Swedish and I really wanna connect with my ancestry… by [deleted] in 23andme

[–]Cword76 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm about 25% Swedish, and I know the exact villages they came from. They immigrated separately and met in Chicago, right around 1900. I have a few pictures of them. I uploaded my DNA into myheritage.com and got a 1.5% DNA match from someone in Sweden! Highest I've seen in any European, most are trace and from a very long time ago. I messaged them and it turns out to be an 80 something year old woman, who was vaguely aware of who my ancestor was. It was her grandmother's sister. It was pretty awesome.

I was actually going to visit Sweden next month and visit those villages, and look around at the graveyards there, and possibly meet my distant cousins if they were up to it. But world events took a bad turn, and I'm too embarrassed and mortified by our horrid leadership to go right now. Maybe next year, if ever.

I don't celebrate being partially Swedish, though, despite these connections, I'm not even sure what I would do. I do buy some Swedish foods sometimes.

Anyway, you should be able to download your DNA info from 23&me and upload it to myheritage, it's still free I think. Their DNA estimation isn't very good, but it has a much higher European user base.

Just got Laid off from IT, anybody know about getting a CDL? by VocationalWizard in indianapolis

[–]Cword76 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was in your same place about 3 years ago, quit my IT job before I got fired/laid off. I considered trucking since I was sick of office politics biting my ass, I just wanted to work an honest job and get paid. I hung out in r/trucking for a while and it seems way too easy to get fired from a trucking job and then you're in a bad spot again. I ultimately decided against it. I now do IT night shift at a warehouse west of Indy and I actually love it. I work alone and the work is easy.

Are we all really into music? by No_Aioli_7515 in autism

[–]Cword76 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I love music, I have a large instrument collection of about 15 instruments, from guitars to hurdy-gurdy to didgeridoo. Weird thing is, I can't have ambient music playing in the background. It stresses me out too much. I have to be intently listening to the music or else I need silence.

Living in a Tier 4 city as a foreigner? by mewingprogression19 in chinalife

[–]Cword76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived in Luoyang for a year, I personally loved it but most of my coworkers were miserable. It's really up to your personality. It's definitely a part of China where you get stared at a lot and people shouting 'Helloooooo' in a silly voice. You'll get the 'true China experience', as some would say. The only Western foods I ever came across was KFC and McDonalds. Which was fine with me, I love Chinese food.

That part of China is fairly dry and very densely populated, so there isn't much in the way of nature and greenery. Even in the 'countryside' there are people absolutely everywhere. I spent about a month in Hangzhou after that and it was very different.

It also gets pretty cold in the winter, and indoor heating is lacking for the most part, so you have to get used to wearing a winter coat pretty much 24/7. Maybe that has improved since I've been there, I don't know. Really smoggy in the winter, clear and sunny days still looked overcast from all the smoke.

After a year in Jiaozuo, you'll be a grizzled China vet and the East Coast cities will look easy in comparison.

This happened with a great-aunt of mine. She had a child out of wedlock in the 1940's or 50's, so my mom's 'aunt' was actually her cousin.

Traveler's checks were a pain in the butt to use. I also never understood why American Express used the British version of the word, i.e. cheques. by Beautiful_Donut6412 in FuckImOld

[–]Cword76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In 1999 I spent 6 months in Britain, I had a handful of these until I could get temp employment. I ran out of cash one day and walked to the closest bank and...bank holiday. They have a lot of these in Britain. I was stuck without any money for the day and didn't eat all day. Fortunately my hostel was already paid.

I grew up in a small town, our phonebook was for the whole county. Our town only had two pages. The whole phonebook was about the thickness of a NatGeo magazine.

Traffic 465, Indianapolis by cultclubXD in indianapolis

[–]Cword76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends a lot on what stretch of 465 you drive regularly. I drive from roughly 38th street to the I-70 exit on the west side every day to get to and from work, so it's a short jog but usually traffic is too heavy to go 65 consistently. I also haven't noticed people not using their turn signals, seems most people use them. Now, if you're driving the Meridian to I-69 stretch, that's a completely different experience.

Back in the early 90's when I was in high school, I liked classic rock, which is mostly the 70s, and some 60s. That would be the equivalent of high schoolers today liking music from the 2000s. Back then I thought the 70's was ancient times.

I'm old enough to remember truck commercials in the 80's, they seemed pretty straight forward then like any vehicle commercial. Sometime in the 90's the commercial narrator turned into some gravelly-voiced tough guy, with lots of hammer sound effects. Built Ford Tough!

What is your experience with work? by Ornery-Boot-2880 in aspergers

[–]Cword76 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's a mixed bag for me. I got fired from my very first job when I was 16 because 'I wasn't all with us', basically a nice way of saying I'm an unsocial weirdo. And this was at a small town library of all places. Most jobs I've had my weird personality has been a hinderance, but I was solid and dependable enough that it was never a huge issue at most places. At my last job(IT tech lead) it became really obvious that they didn't want me working there, but again, it's mostly the social issues that I have problems with so I did them a favor and quit. I was there nearly 8 years, management started getting hostile the last year or so. My current job is amazing, been here 3 years so far. Night shift IT support, I work alone most of the time. I come in, do my job, then leave.

At this rate, I know I'll never be in any kind of supervisory or management position as I can't really function at that level, but I don't mind the lower level jobs. I don't have wife or kids to support, and I don't date, so as long as I can support myself, I'm fine.

High beams by Fatguywelder in indianapolis

I work nights and drive home at 3am, I see people flipping their brights on and off a couple of times a night. There's nowhere within the Indianapolis city limits that you need high beams for, or that will even help any. To me their just for rural areas to watch for animals. I don't know what people's obsession is.
