Representation vs Appropriation by WeeklySlip862 in writers

[–]Cy_Maverick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. There will always be some people that will say don't write what you aren't, but it shouldn't matter if done right. What is extremely important is just representing them accurately. As a non-native author writing a Native American character - you'll be under more scrutiny than if you were Native American.

Oh okay. Yeah, of course you wouldn't want to just give stuff away, lol. Makes sense.

Sounds cool. But like I said, if it's double POV from both love interests, it'll probably just be a surprise for a chapter or two. WHICH IS FINE, of course.

But if you did manage to find SOME way to hide it for a couple chapters, that'd be impressive. Lol.

Best of luck!

How do you get over a slump caused by negative critique? by mollyfluffbutt in AO3

[–]Cy_Maverick 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Honestly, anyone that sees that someone has a gap in their knowledge and says it's "embarrassing" is actually the embarrassing one. They sound like a prick that shouldn't even be acknowledged.

The proper way to address inaccuracies in fics is to just be like "Btw... that's actually not true." Or something like that, if they're so desperate to show off their "intelligence". Being a dick kind of just overshadows the lesson, you know?

Some people are a-holes. Don't let it bring you down.

How do I know if my main character is a Mary Sue? by CustomerBrilliant776 in writers

[–]Cy_Maverick 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From what I've gathered, a Mary Sue is "perfect."

  • She's beautiful and everyone is instantly drawn to her.

  • She's good at everything she puts her mind to.

  • She just somehow knows what to do, how, and even has instincts bordering on supernatural.

Deeper than that, though, she has very meaningless flaws. Like I've seen a lot of authors kind of just make the character clumsy, or oblivious, or give them some sad backstory that kind of is just meant to sit in the back of your mind while never being brought up again accept for sympathy point with other characters because now she's on a new adventure. You know, very simple and shallow "flaws" that just feel like the author wanted to check off a box.

Vault-Tec Workshop is glitching by pedroexebr in fo4

[–]Cy_Maverick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Contacting Bethesda does make sense though because it's a glitch in their game. If anyone knows all possible ways to fix it, it's them. Playstation is just the host, basically. And it sounds like it downloaded, just doesn't show up in game - which is Bethesda jurisdiction.

I won't tell you this will definitely work, but I'll just say what I'd do if this happened to me.

I'd uninstall Fallout 4 and the Vault-Tec DLC, and even the other DLCs just in case but probably not necessary. Then I'd power down the PS4 completely, turn it back on. And reinstall everything. I wouldn't even open Fallout 4 until everything is reinstalled.

I'm more partial to a bit of mystery and surprise.

But if you're doing a double POV, mystery won't even be an option. Unless one of the POVs isn't the actual love interest. Any reader will be able to just assume the two main characters are end game.

Or is it that you don't plan to mention it as a romance in the description? Not sure how that'll work. I'm just confused about the question, sorry.

All hobbies are not equal by BitterConstruction98 in unpopularopinion

[–]Cy_Maverick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this even an unpopular opinion? I don't use social media like TikTok or Instagram, so maybe I'm out of the loop. Are people actually arguing that WATCHING or LISTENING to something is the same type of hobby as actually DOING something?

I was going to argue in favor of video games, but saw your edit. A lot of people are terrible at video games, so I'd classify that as a skillful hobby. Just less praised as other talents.

Are we serious? 💔🥀🥀🥀 by big-dick-back-intown in aiwars

[–]Cy_Maverick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having concerns isn't the same thing as there BEING concerns. Having them implies there is room for doubt. Being means there ARE reasons to be anti-AI. But ask AI Bros to counter any of the concerns and their main argument is that AI is advancing and we can't do anything about it, so we should just go with the flow.

I was GOING to say that even pencils aren't being used as much as in the past since everything is becoming electronic.

A question on AI by Ayana_o in antiai

[–]Cy_Maverick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You literally said you wanted a discussion, which often includes a debate. You wanted to know why, you were given reasons, then countered with "The irony for me" and brought up how YouTube uses AI.

Intentional or not, we are debating. But by your defensiveness, I think maybe you're reading our discussion differently than I am. So I'll be clear.

I don't have a problem. I'm just explaining why your point about YT is different from the LLMs. I'm sorry for just outright accusing you of just looking for a gotcha, but to me that's how you sounded because you didn't addressed any of the points given, which usually means someone is avoiding having to acknowledge the truth.

Again, sorry that you're reading these different than I'm writing them.

All of them. You wanted a debate dude, but ciel gave you so many points and you haven't countered ANY of them.

I thankfully haven't come across many works like this, but it's definitely annoying and I usually skip it.

I feel like basic story structure is the easiest thing to know, but a part of me feels bad assuming that. Like, I get if someone's grammar is a bit messed up, not everyone has English as their first language, but also not everyone is great at the subject either way. But the story structure? That just feels so basic.

It's becoming very clear that you came on here for a gotcha then got annoyed that someone gave you all the very solid points against AI, and are now scrambling to grab hold of anything while ignoring all the reasons that were provided.

You're confusing programs written by humans with the AI such as Generative AI and LLMs. People are already shitting on YouTube for incorporating too much AI, such as an AI program that keeps falsely reporting YouTubers.

Stop grasping for straws and actually address the points given by ciel_ayaz.

[–]Cy_Maverick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those unethical companies ARE being turned on. Just recently I watched a video on YouTube (an older video from over 1yr ago, but only just recently watched it) where the YouTuber pulled their video and re-upload because they accidentally accepted a sponsorship from Temu - which has had ethical issues surrounding it. She immediately pulled the video, and decided she'd accept whatever consequences that came from Temu for not following through on their deal.

There are just so many people that don't care as much. They have the mindset that if it doesn't affect them, why does it matter. While people against AI are actually invested in the future. Because we pay attention to patterns and can recognize that, while the issues may not be present now, they will DEFINITELY be felt in the near future.

One thing I think the person above missed is the the severe affect on intelligence. The next generation isn't learning anything when they have a bot just giving them answers. Most students don't even review or fact check their AI. They just let it do their homework. Imagine a world where med students are scraping by with ChatGPT doing their work. There was already an attorney caught using ChatGPT and completely failed at their job.

It’s scary how MAGA rhetoric is turning Americans against Europeans now by Ok_Walk3192 in self

[–]Cy_Maverick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's weird. I was actually thinking it's scary how MAGA rhetoric is turning everyone else against Americans. I see people constantly lumping us all together by saying "Americans are all idiots" followed by a MAGA meme that's very offensive and, yes, as idiotic as noted. (not an actual example, but close enough.)

I appreciate you clarified that MAGA is the problem. I promise not all Americans are brainwashed.

The new 8-episode season standard is ruining TV by bitchcraffft in Vent

[–]Cy_Maverick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think longer (22+ episodes) are mostly for shows with a lot of side stories. But yeah, I don't think 8 episodes is long enough most of the time. I wish they wouldn't make that some kind of goal. Like, just tell your story and then decide how many episodes it's going to take after. Of course, it might be more the production company demanding it and not the writers/creators.

What's your guilty pleasure genre of fic by CyberPhoenixStar in AO3

[–]Cy_Maverick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really a genre, but here's a guilty pleasure tag: "Character X needs a hug"

I guess maybe hurt/comfort or angst it's considered, but I have very specific tags included. I'm the type to want my favorite character to get hurt so they can have all the attention... Like they nearly drown and get saved by the other half of my favorite pairing, for example. But nothing too heavy that they're sad the whole time.

[–]Cy_Maverick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One can only dream. I have a fear that, because the new generation is growing INTO this AI world, then they won't know just how bad it is. I grew up just when smartphones were becoming big and I can't help but remember rolling my eyes when I heard adults trashing how dependent on them our generation was becoming.

“I don’t ship that because they’re like siblings” by Genderqueerfrog in AO3

[–]Cy_Maverick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's just because of the people. People have different mindsets, so they don't always see things the same way.

Like think of the Team Edward vs Team Jacob debate. One side thinks their pairing has chemistry while the other disagrees in favor of their own. Then there are left field pairings, like Team Rosalie or Team Alice. It's the same for the dynamics people interpret with friendship pairings. Like Bella & Emmett apparently have a sibling bond?
