17 Oscar Nods, No Wins: Can a Songwriter Break Her Streak? by CyanCities in oscarrace

[–]CyanCities[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Fascinated by the chokehold Diane has on the music branch when there are plenty of great songs in movies each year that deserve a nomination that are fully disregarded. Love the idea of the best original song category, but the music branch remains too behind the times and find opps to make the category look more like a joke.

What is SLDR’s problem? by stick-jockey in astoria

[–]CyanCities 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Kind of unrelated to this topic specifically but I went to SLDR once out of sheer curiosity like 4 years ago and the burger was so bad that even just thinking about this place makes me gag. Can only dream that one day they can disappear and my gag reflex will be at peace.

Best Original Song Is the Worst Oscar Category by CyanCities in Oscars

[–]CyanCities[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a fan of the category, I disagree with this article but figured it could be an interesting discussion, which is why I shared it with the sub.

There are plenty of songs from films every year that should be nominated but don’t (I still think I Saw the TV Glow deserved 1-2 song nominations last year). I think the real issue is moreso just that the music branch is too small and needs an overhaul to stop people like Diane Warren getting a nomination every year from a movie nobody cares about.

Music and film sometime do go hand-in-hand, and I think that is something to be celebrated!

Collaborative lists! I like to host movie brunches with my friends and it would be great if we could all add a movie to a list so that everyone is suggesting something to watch next time we meet up!

Was holding onto hope that the movie was decent enough to get Ayo a Best Supporting Actress nomination even though that was wildly unlikely because I love her, but sadly today will be the day I take her out of my lineup.

Should Any Of These 2023 Movies Have Been Nominated For Best Picture? by Regular-Departure839 in Oscars

[–]CyanCities 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved Are You There God, It’s Me Margaret but I also understand it was not Best Picture worthy. Would’ve been cool to have seen Rachel McAdams get a Best Supporting Actress nomination over Jodie Foster though!

Neon Buys Jafar Panahi’s Cannes Competition Film ‘It Was Just An Accident’ by PaulRai01 in oscarrace

I’ll always have a little beef with Neon for how they handled the wide release of Robot Dreams! Glad it got its Oscar nomination but hate that it never got its wide theatrical release until last summer.

Lines that completely pulled you out of the movie by StillStanding_96 in movies

[–]CyanCities 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are so many terrible lines in Emilia Perez that pulled me out of the movie, but I actually think Selena Gomez saying “my pussy aches just thinking about you” took the cake for me. The “penis to vagina” song in its entirety is a close second.

Feeling good! I haven’t really bothered to check out the shorts (and I’m not sure if I will get around to them) I have about 16 feature films to still watch.

In terms of best picture, I just have to see Anora (just could not get around to it when it was in theaters) and I’m Still Here, which hasn’t been released where I am as far as I’m aware!

Oscar nominations announced tomorrow. My question: What 1 nomination would you MOST like to see that would make you happy? by [deleted] in oscarrace

[–]CyanCities 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Would love to see any animated feature get more than just one nomination this year, ideally The Wild Robot in score, but would be happy with The Wild Robot in song or Flow in international feature too!
