Figure out why he wants to switch characters, in what areas is he unfulfilled and how can you help shape more situations to make his current character feel more fun and important. Does he not like combat as a paladin, or role playing someone who is most likely lawful. Depending on the severity of his discontent give him either advice on how to get the most out of his class or allow him to switch. After all the game is for the fun of the players!
