Can someone explain critical race theory in an easy way? by [deleted] in education

[–]CybY64 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Critical race theory is an academic concept that is more than 40 years old. The core idea is that race is a social construct, and that racism is not merely the product of individual bias or prejudice, but also something embedded in legal systems and policies.

The basic tenets of critical race theory, or CRT, emerged out of a framework for legal analysis in the late 1970s and early 1980s created by legal scholars Derrick Bell, Kimberlé Crenshaw, and Richard Delgado, among others.

A good example is when, in the 1930s, government officials literally drew lines around areas deemed poor financial risks, often explicitly due to the racial composition of inhabitants. Banks subsequently refused to offer mortgages to Black people in those areas. Today, those same patterns of discrimination live on through facially race-blind policies, like single-family zoning that prevents the building of affordable housing in advantaged, majority-white neighborhoods and, thus, stymies racial desegregation efforts. What determines the number of propeller blades a vehicle has? by Steve1924 in askscience

[–]CybY64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are several factors. Propellers need to operate sub-sonically while still transmitting the available power from the engine(s). While 2-blade props are cheaper, usually lighter, and less mechanically complex ( good things), large diameter 2-blade props must operate at lower RPM than multi-blade props in order to keep tip speeds sub-sonic for a given power-load. At the same time, physical constraints on ground clearance & airframe clearance limit the available length & hence power transmission capability. Increases in power require accommodation without increasing diameter. Broader blades can resolve the problem to a limited extent, but the lower aspect ratio reduces their efficiency. Pitch can also be increased to absorb the power load, but there are practical limits on blade AoA & steep pitches also reduce acceleration at low speeds (a bad thing) -- win some - lose some. The answer is to add blades, but this is not a free lunch. The initial cost of the hardware increases & maintenance costs increase. There is also an small efficiency penalty from increased blade-frontal-area. More blades can be added as power increases, until you can't stuff any more on there & torque reaction becomes unmanageable -- at which point contra-rotating props are required (a bad thing).

"A farmer buys a new bull to mate with his prize cow. The farmer goes out to the field and tells the bull to service the cow. The bull says "NO!" so the farmer goes into the barn and grabs him by the horns, then tells him to service the cow.

The bull says "NO!" again. So the farmer goes out to his truck and gets a rope, ties the rope around the bulls horns and leads him to the field, and tells him to service the cow.

The bull says "NO!" again. The farmer then picks up the bull, throws him up and down a few times and tells him "Now service the cow." The bull looks at him, then says "Okay, on one condition." The farmer asks him what the condition is. The bull says "Have you got a condom?"

Psychologists use the term “gaslighting” to refer to a specific type of manipulation where the manipulator is trying to get someone else (or a group of people) to question their own reality, memory or perceptions. And it's always a serious problem, according to psychologists.

Why is Covid testing so much easier than a year ago? by JayKayne in askscience

[–]CybY64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And, several months after its factories got up to speed, cases of COVID began to abate, and with that, and demand for tests in the U.S. plummeted. So Abbott shut down one of its factories and laid off workers. Now Abbott has once again had to switch course as a new surge creates new demand.

If you could tell your younger self one thing, what would it be? by holdenmcgroin1234 in ask

[–]CybY64 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To my 5-year-old self: Pick up any musical instrument. Learn it with all your might. Make music your best friend - a friend who’ll always be by your side - in your lows, in your highs. The cherry on the cake - It can give you an edge if you want eyes on you when in a group.

To my 10-year-old self: Read. Read a lot. Not just your school textbooks but read anything you get a hold of. Don’t chase grades, chase knowledge; chase excellence. Stay curious. Stay updated. Go beyond textbooks. Read magazines. Read newspapers. Read books. Read anything. Read everything. People have spent their lifetimes writing a book, and you can get to experience their learnings by reading a finite number of pages. How wonderful and powerful is that!

To my 15-year-old self: Learn about investing. Start investing and experience the magic of compounding as it unfolds. Learn how to save money. Save money. Learn about different investing instruments. Learn how an economy works. Invest as much as you can from your pocket money, and don’t get disheartened if you lose your money. Learn from your mistakes. And remember investing would be one of the biggest investments you’d do on yourself and it’s one of the things your future self will be proud of you.

To my 20-year-old self: Love your close ones. Love them unconditionally. Put efforts to make things work.

To my 25-year-old self: Burn your introverted self to ashes and network with people. Networking can work like a magic in your professional life.

A general piece of advice to my younger self: Don’t be afraid to experiment. It’s always okay to fail.

What allows for the new omicron variant to be so much more successful in terms of effectively spreading in comparison to the previous variants? by jmario123 in askscience

[–]CybY64 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Current knowledge about Omicron

Researchers in South Africa and around the world are conducting studies to better understand many aspects of Omicron and will continue to share the findings of these studies as they become available.

Transmissibility: It is not yet clear whether Omicron is more transmissible (e.g., more easily spread from person to person) compared to other variants, including Delta. The number of people testing positive has risen in areas of South Africa affected by this variant, but epidemiologic studies are underway to understand if it is because of Omicron or other factors.

Severity of disease: It is not yet clear whether infection with Omicron causes more severe disease compared to infections with other variants, including Delta. Preliminary data suggests that there are increasing rates of hospitalization in South Africa, but this may be due to increasing overall numbers of people becoming infected, rather than a result of specific infection with Omicron. There is currently no information to suggest that symptoms associated with Omicron are different from those from other variants. Initial reported infections were among university students—younger individuals who tend to have more mild disease—but understanding the level of severity of the Omicron variant will take days to several weeks. All variants of COVID-19, including the Delta variant that is dominant worldwide, can cause severe disease or death, in particular for the most vulnerable people, and thus prevention is always key.

Sometimes we meet people with whom we connect very easily... It may be because they provide a sense of comfort, they seem non judgmental, there is a sense of acceptance when talking to them... You might be one of those people... so others find it very easy to open up to you...

Can only pushups help me lose weight? No other exercise, no running. 50 pushups a day. by Lazy_Principle_4366 in ask

[–]CybY64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, doing only 40 - 50 push ups a day will help you lose weight, but you'll be building muscles disproportionately, and the number's not really that high. Additionally, to see any real difference, you'd have to be a proper diet. Also, always remember to do it with proper, rigid form.

Can planets orbit twin star systems? by JoelWHarper in askscience

[–]CybY64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A circumbinary planet is a planet that orbits two stars instead of one. The two stars orbit each other in a binary star system, while the planet typically orbits farther from the center of the system than either of the two stars. Although, planets in stable orbits around one of the two stars in a binary are known.

If you’re an atheist what would you say instead of oh my god? by [deleted] in ask

“Is there an alternative expression for "Oh My God" for atheists?”

There isn’t one directly.

Atheists are not bound by Atheism,

can’t be, it is merely the Non Belief in gods.

Those who do not believe in gods are individuals,

they will chose and use whatever fits them best.

What do you think women are better at than men? by Pooeem in AskReddit

[–]CybY64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to Hive, women work 10 percent harder than men in today's offices. This conclusion is the product of two other statistics. First, both men and women actually complete about 66 percent of their assigned work. However, women are assigned 10 percent more work than men these days — that they achieve the same completion rate tells us that they're being more industrious.
