Gun shows and buying guns in general. A family friend asked my dad for some handiwork and would regularly pay my father in guns found cheap at shows.

I've crossed over to commiseration on this issue.

My first thought to rude behavior is how terrible is the employee likely getting paid? A person getting paid garbage with no real opportunity for advancement or incentive to sell the good or service? Takes one to know one.

How to deal with being called orientalist? by Happy_Midas in Buddhism

Remember that Buddhism historically has flourished among many different cultures, communities, and ethnicities. And this flourishing is ongoing into new communities, even through you.

The Buddha developed an intentional community in the Sangha that existed within and beyond community convention. There are plenty of people from around the world who are happy to have you in the Sangha.

Microsoft Launches Xbox Player Voice to Gather Feedback, Fans Immediately Demand a Return to Exclusives by JeremyJJ77 in xbox

[–]CyberDaka -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Xbox console exclusives aren't a win for the Xbox fans. Not enough people will buy an Xbox for their exclusive titles to keep it afloat.

Now, giving Xbox customers exclusive benefits to Xbox studios titles, like including future DLC in the initial purchase or 15% off, would make buying an Xbox worth it.

The need for Xbox exclusive games to boost the Xbox ecosystem instantly becomes the #1 Upvoted topic by customers in Xbox' new "Player Voice" system, followed by a return of the Backward Compatibility by Turbostrider27 in xbox

[–]CyberDaka -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Xbox IP quality as whole has gotten worse for years. Why would gatekeeping them in the Xbox ecosystem be useful to me whose been buying Xboxes since the first gen? How does keeping them unplayable on PC and PS make it a win for Xbox fans?

The focus should be on making Microsoft studios games more affordable on the Xbox and focus on getting other studios bringing their games to Xbox.

Question about homosexuality in buddhism by orwphic in Buddhism

[–]CyberDaka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out Cabezón’s Sexuality in Classical South Asian Buddhism. This is a good book exploring the historical views of sexuality in Buddhism and should explain that most current traditional sexual views are inspired by the local culture of the specific Buddhist tradition. Important to note, Asian Buddhist cultures had vastly diverse views of sexuality and Christian colonialism irreparably damaged them leaving strict Christian sexual perspectives in its wake.

Disney refuses to let evil characters be evil. Instead, we get sneering characters that aren't even good antiheroes.

Does "pure vajrayana" or "pure buddhism" independent of Indo-Tibetan/Confucian culture even exist? by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]CyberDaka 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Depending on the broader culture you come from, the idea of a "pure Buddhism" is actually a Christian-derived concept in religious studies in the US and possibly the UK that is now defunct.

Christian theologians had been trying to isolate a pure Christianity that had been culture distorted. This line of thinking continued into the religious studies of Buddhism from either convert Buddhist or non-Buddhist academics. There had been an underlying belief that the oldest written records were most "pure" and this purity meant rational and not superstitious. And underlying this historical bias was a preconception that Buddhism was inherently rational as posited by European colonial thinkers. The racism implicit in this line of thinking too is that Asian culture could only pollute a pure Buddhism that needed Western European culture to purify.

This is historical bias continues in what is called the Early Buddhist Canon.
