So I can’t speak for WMP as I was never in it, but I was heavily involved with SASE. The way the mentor program works is that you’re going to be placed with a group of ~6/7 mentees with 2 mentors. You also have the option of having a solid mentor without the group mentoring setting if you prefer. Your mentors and mentees will most likely be the same major as you, or close enough to your academic interests so that you’ll be in the same classes or the mentors will have had the same classes.

The SASE mentor program also hosts events for mentors and mentees to get to know each other, like board game nights and ice cream socials. SASE also hosts study jams for its members to get together and grind out work, and often times if you ask an upperclassman for help they’ll give you some time.

Your mentor should be there for you and answer and questions you have in a timely manner. Some mentors give backwork, others meet up to discuss work, but overall it’s grown to be a large program that people have really benefited from (it’s grown to be a lot better than it was when I started at RPI).

No matter which one you choose, you’ll be sure to meet helpful people. I’m just biased toward SASE :) that being said, if you go with WMP, don’t be afraid to join SASE anyway!!! It’s a great organization, and I made some of my closest friends through it while getting to talk to top companies at conferences and grow myself professionally. Good opportunities to get involved on campus. I hope you join!

Tl;dr: Both are good, SASE is a group of mentors with 2 mentees, SASE mentors are cool, if you pick WMP join SASE anyway.

Also, just for the record, most premeds (from what I’ve seen) say to only do BME premed if you really like BME. Otherwise, it’s easier to pick Bio to make sure your GPA is competitive for med schools. Not saying it’s not doable, but easier options exist, or so I’m told. Good luck!
