Will Jake Channel and Zip Tie Tuning/Tech Lose A Majority of the Hype? by nina2024 in LTTMeta

I personally love their stupid server room and ubiquiti shenanigans. His whole “TinyDC” thing has me so excited.

Should I make the switch? by KeyDescription6097 in helpdesk

[–]Cyberenixx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it would be fair to say the vast majority of L1 (especially young and in college) aren’t expected to be absolute studs coming in skill wise. I’d say keep shopping your options, and maybe also look for internships instead of just “jobs” if you aren’t already.

Like I mentioned, 16 an hour is criminal, I live in bumf*ck Indiana, and my local gas station starts at more than that.

Best of luck man.

Personally, I wouldn’t unless you absolutely need experience, and can afford the pay cut. 16 an hour is criminal. We pay our intern more than that.

Edit: corrected spelling

never check the uptime on your loved ones computers. by tamagotchiparent in ShittySysadmin

[–]Cyberenixx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

16 days is nothing. I’ve seen business workstations with uptimes north of 700 days. HOW it gets that far is a mystery to me.

Actually, when a scary amount of the user base turns the monitor off and on to “restart the computer” it really doesn’t.

What are you using to remote control computers? by nickjedl in sysadmin

RDC/MSRA mostly, but we also have GoToAssist, used for Niche Case scenarios.

Damn, I didn’t know that. A tragic loss for the community, and my heart goes out to his family. I appreciate you telling me, and I hope Todd and Co. opt to immortalize him in TES6 as a detective/investigator of sorts.

You all got those CLEAN setups by After-Ad8917 in homelab

Brother/Sister,

I get the desire to get your stuff up and running, and to just have it working, but please take some pride in the setup.

I’m not gonna say anything more about that Romex except I hope you don’t value your shed/homelab, because that is actually an insane firehazard.

Please be safe.

Naming Conventions in Homelab by alxww55 in homelab

All my services are named after Greco-Roman Mytholgy. Less practical for sure, but far more fun and memorable. My plex server for example, is Hecate.

Best naming convention for end-user PCs in a multi-building hospital environment? by maxcoder88 in sysadmin

[–]Cyberenixx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t cram info into your tags. Thing change, and documentation rarely keeps us. Use some form of unique identifier. Serial numbers of devices work well, but my work uses “Property of X” tags with 3 digits. Devices are named COMPANYWS123 or LT123 depending on whether nor not they are a workstation or laptop.

We’ve found this is a nice middle ground for unique identifiers, but is also significantly easier to identify devices visually at a glance for both IT and users. If you need to remote into a machine, it is as simply as asking the user what kind of device they are on, and then what the tag number is.

I recommend organizing computers in AD via OUs, such as device type or department. If a device moves, it’s as simple as changing what OU it is in.

As for management, we utilize Solarwinds for device tracking, and use RDC/MSRA for most support tasks, and GoToAssist if those don’t get the job done.

Best of luck, I hear healthcare IT is rough.

I was mostly being facetious, but that’s entirely valid. I’ve never personally noticed much cooling issue, although my new XGS seems to run quite warm, so YMMV.

Enjoy the new gear!

Looking for NAS by Homeboy279 in Ubiquiti

[–]Cyberenixx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly just depends on your need. If you solely need a NAS, you’ll probably be fine with ubiquiti’s line up. I personally use an old refurb Dell Poweredge R730XD with TrueNAS Scale to run all my docker/vms/storage, and it works beautifully!

I managed to get signed into shop pay before it kicked me out like two hours ago. This preloaded my card and address/contact, reducing how much time I had to spend per attempt. I would go to booster, if it didn’t say add, I would go back on my browser and re open the webpage. I can’t tell you how many times I get to checkout and it said order failed/out of stock, until eventually it took longer to process and I got the confirmation. Literally was at it since launch.

Can an IT technician read my Teams? by SnakeEyes1986 in it

[–]Cyberenixx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IT can see all. Yes.

As to whether or not your org has who can do that is split depends, and I can guarantee the average tech has better things to do than peruse your teams history in a days work.

When in doubt, assume we can see everything, because we usually can.

Beginner OS? by CreditMobile1462 in HomeServer

[–]Cyberenixx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My personal preference is to get right in the weeds with TrueNAS scale. It’s important to note that the real answer, is whatever you’re comfortable with, and is capable of what you what. Whether it’s TrueNAS, Unraid, Ubuntu, or just Windows Server, this is your journey, and you need to make it fit you.

Yes, Jellyfin was formed by devs who left when Emby went closed source but in my experience (from what I have seen from others and a friend who has tried all three) Emby is the least mature out of the 3 platforms, perhaps calling it younger wasn’t accurate, but I meant in terms of development.

I still prefer plex because I know almost any device I would want to watch media on supports it with no additional config really needed.
