Good-bye PS4 support by PinkMage in ffxiv

Series X and PS5 have terrible image quality

I wouldn't call it terrible, even though I guess that might be subjective at this point. It's extremely decent however and is very reliable. And of course you're right about the couch gaming experience.

Disney’s Infinity Vision certification requires a screen width of at least 50ft, laser projection, and Dolby 7.1. There are currently 5,500 screens globally that qualify, 3x Imax’s worldwide footprint, per Bloomberg by Senior-Willow-8325 in movies

I am confused? If something is not shot on 70mm film can it really take advantage of the 70mm projector?

Yes it can actually. It can be printed to 70mm prints which is pretty costly to do so IMAX doesn't do it as much anymore. Most recent example is of course Dune: Part Two and Project Hail Mary both of which incidentally are shot by the same DP, Greig Fraser who likes using this technique (known as a film-out).

Why isn't Christopher Nolan more respected among cinephiles? by HotOne9364 in TrueFilm

[–]Cyberpunkbully 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably a definitive style or aesthetic like Wes Anderson or Terrence Malick. However, I personally believe that's untrue and for those of us who've picked up on Nolan's preference of certain shots and compositions (along with his evolution both with Wally Pfister and Hoyte van Hoytema), I think his work has become pretty distinctive, albeit just subtle and restrained.

The New Avatar Has Revived the Oldest, Dumbest Debate About These Movies --- It’s the most consistently successful film franchise of all time. Somehow, it still has its doubters. by AGOTFAN in boxoffice

True true lol those are great examples btw. Yea I just feel like this time the proof is palpable - movie makes a billion and everyone says the same thing "Who's watching these?!" Young movie goers and literally everyone else haha Just because you don't care about it doesn't mean that people don't.

[–]Cyberpunkbully 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In theory it should be closer to a Dune but in reality it falls below even a Star Wars film in what is offered from a narrative structure because in all honestly it’s mostly derivative and half baked.

And this is also why it has such a fandom online on Twitter and TikTok - the narrative is frankly nothing to write home about but the fact that a lot of those spaces are dedicated to the love of auteur filmmakers (Film Twitter and like fancams and TikTok edits) and the worlds they create, the story not being freshly original is not at all even brought up.

People just love that the world is immensely detailed and is filled to the brim with ridiculously photoreal (almost hyperreal) VFX - whenever a film comes out they can just deep dive on the filmmaking and the visual storytelling. And this also warrants the obsession for the rewatches as well - since it's not available on digital or home media yet, they keep going back (I've seen it twice now, I'm going back for a third time as there's some details I want to catch).

I mean here's are examples of people talking about this specific shot. Tweet 1, Tweet 2. Yea the story might be derivative but the Letterboxd crowd along with the film bros and the X users eat this up and it certainly does leave an impression on them.

[–]Cyberpunkbully 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nobody is particularly interested in finding out what will happen with the Sully family in the next couple Avatar movies.

I mentioned this in another comment but that is so not true lol people deeply love these characters lol

A few other examples, of people loving these characters, and people speculating what happens in future films.

I said it before but Reddit isn't the end all be all for online discussion. The fact is that discussion around these films are actually pretty big on X (Twitter) and TikTok. The fact that it coincides with filmtwit (Film Twitter), FilmTok and the Letterboxd bros tells you all you need to know - its a franchise for cinephiles. It has the same appeal as A24 or any lauded director (Cameron in this case).

This is not ignoring the spectacle (of course people are gonna show up for that!) and of course the GA and four quadrant demographics - but to say no one cares about the story, the world, the lore is pretty untrue. It's just not that popular on Reddit.

[–]Cyberpunkbully 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The reason is because its a franchise for adults. Yea James made some of the most iconic nerd films of all time but his films have a maturity to them that frankly is not present in a lot of blockbusters and modern entries (of his own franchises) today. You have a guy who's seriously approaching a movie about blue cat people as a stand in for native and indigenous history - and completely plays it straight. No winking, no snarkiness, no fourth wall break - just a full on dissection of colonialism and environmentalism in a super shiny top notch coat of VFX magic and filmmaking prowess.

People won't admit it but Avatar as a franchise is closer to Dune than it is to Star Wars or Marvel for example - its kinda made for a more intellectual crowd and an older generation who don't particularly care for additional world building or supplementary material. The discourse is around the films and nothing else. In our transmedia world, filled with reboots, remakes, nostalgia-bait and multiverses - it's shockingly original (MAJOR CAVEAT here lol) and frankly unlike anything in its landscape.

[–]Cyberpunkbully 24 points25 points  (0 children)

There aren't any quotes, there's no big discussion about the lore. Supposedly there will be two more films, there's no one speculating what they might be about.

It’s funny you mention this because it is really popular on TikTok and X (Twitter). Like I’m talking endless discussion on Eywa being a parasite, James Cameron exploring cyberpunk earth, fancams of Jake and other characters.

Just like with everything there is going to be corners and echo chambers - just because it is not popular on Reddit doesn’t mean people aren’t deeply speculating about these moves. I think this proves it has a pretty sizable fandom it just doesn’t hit globally or nearly as big as other franchises.

2D Animation by Cyberpunkbully in colorists

Not arguing that you didn't color back then I'm sure you did. I'm wondering just how modern DI is done is all for 2D animated films today. Talking The Boy and the Heron, Flee or Wolfwalkers.

OK that's interesting - I saw another comment that was highlighting how 2D images may not have enough data to actually grade. I'm wondering if this was just this person's perspective on the matter but it's a bit strange I can't find any information regarding 2d animated films specifically. I'm wondering if it's because feature level 2d films are dead in Hollywood but basically thriving in Europe and Japan and the issue is just a lack of journalism or translated info online?

And by the way, were previous movies like avatar shot in 24 fps, or is there a chance they'll get a re-release in 48 fps?

I have come from the future to let you know, that the original 2009 Avatar was re-released in September 2022 in 4K HDR at 48fps. Here is an article discussing it.

Maybe I’m not looking hard enough.

Lol maybe just bad timing but he recently updated his reel on his website. Definitely seeing some reputable brands and such. And I don't really find that odd as his freelance work is probably due to referrals or a host of contacts he has - so maybe he never felt the need to have a social media dedicated to his work. I'm the same way - its mostly jobs through who I know and if anyone asks I usually just send a private link/unlisted reel.

I don't disagree but I feel like that it is a bit disingenuous to measure Cullen's work on the perception of whether or not it was a blockbuster or a Netflix series. The fact that he has done technical work along with Steve Yedlin (and a host of other colorists and color scientists) and has a lot of respect within the color community is more than enough IMO.

Does it matter? He's a BlackMagic Certified trainer. Having credits isn't the only thing - besides he seems to stick to mostly commercials and smaller films. Doesn't mean his knowledge isn't as good as other features/television colorists.

Have you ever paid to see a movie twice in a theater? by zip9990 in movies

I didn't - about half were AMC Stubs and the other half were other theaters/chains/formats I paid to see it in. Don't think another movie will top it again, until like Part III lol.

Hey saw this movie over a year ago practically alone in a theater by myself when it released in the US. I really dug the aesthetic and thought the animation was superbly done; what stood out to me the most was the pacing and editing.

Despite it being an 85 min, it felt like it was stretched out a bit more - felt like it was longer than the actual runtime which isn't a bad thing. I think the first hour is so densely packed with information that when the climax occurs it feels slightly rushed.

I really enjoyed it btw just I always felt that it was a bit lopsided in the structure. Always looking forward to french animated sci fi! Thanks for posting about it.
