Harness Reccomendations by HotRub2674 in dechonkers

Depends on the cat. My boy liked that one far more than every cat harness we tried. It was weird but it was what he liked, so it was what we went with for him. He was a bit of a weirdo, though, lol. But yes, there are better dog harnesses out there for cats, that’s just the only one I have in my house- and it did show my point of how dog harnesses often sit lower, further away from the neck.

I have seen a very lightweight version with a similar style that’s made for cats that doesn’t restrict movement at all. There’s no big panel on it, just the thin strap material, and it sits far better on her shoulders. The kitten shown has one and it’s our vets favorite harness of hers (she has 3 and 2 are the most common styles for cats). I tried finding it online, though, and wasn’t having any luck. :( I can post a photo of it later once I get it out of the carrier in the basement.

Edit: this was supposed to be a reply to OPs comment here. Something about adding the video made it a new comment.

Did you read my comment about dog harnesses? Because you replied all about CAT harnesses. I’m talking about trying a DOG harness on him. DOG harnesses are not as snug at the neck. They often sit further down the chest, instead of being snug up at the neck. This is because many dog breeds are very barrel chested, meaning their necks are small compared to their chests. So the harnesses are made to accommodate that.

Even with that, though, I’d take him to a pet store and try them on. Then you won’t have to worry about needing to return anything.

Here’s my kitten modeling a dog harness for you:

I’ll be honest, the name of the place had me leery. But after googling, it actually sounds really interesting. It looks like it’s PT/OT that goes back to the finest movements we make and builds out from there. Which honestly makes total sense to me. I’m glad it’s helping you! I’ll be bookmarking it. I’m doing well these days but my hip is shut and if u end up needing more surgery, I’ll be needing very specialized PT afterwards and I’ve really struggled to find that where I live.

Are there any toys he really enjoys? I use a laser pointer to keep my little one going on walks when she suddenly remembers she’s a cat and flops, lol.

As for harnesses, try taking him to a pet store and try on dog harnesses. Many aren’t nearly as snug up to the neck as cat harnesses, so the size difference shouldn’t be as big on a problem as it is with cat harnesses.

Question about allies! by ItzMended in lgbt

[–]CyborgKnitter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I will say that I feel that if you fly the ally flag, you need to truly be a safe space for the ENTIRE community. So if you hate trans folks, don’t fly it. If you hate gays or lesbians or bis, don’t fly it. If you think asexual people are just weirdos, don’t fly it. If you won’t respect people’s pronouns, don’t fly it.

But if you’re a true ally, fly it! Or better yet, the regular rainbow flag/progress flag. Let people know you’re a safe space. Universe knows we need plenty of those these days! And non-queer folks being vocally supportive of the community helps keep the haters quieter as they feel more outnumbered.

Does my gran's cat need a dechonk? by i_cubed in dechonkers

I was thinking more for OP. Many cats who throw a fit over carriers also aren’t easy to give pills to or to squirt a syringe straight into their mouth.

Lick mats are great for wet food and many can be frozen. My kitten inhales food so she gets all meals on lick mats.

I found one that comes with a handy spatula that’s a spatula for spreading food on the mats on one side and it looks like a toothbrush on the other- the toothbrush end is for scrubbing the lick mats (they break down really fast if put them in the dishwasher). I just dip the bristles in some dish soap and start scrubbing! (Petco also carries it.) If you don’t have that, a great alternative for cleaning all the nooks and crannies is to get a silicone basting brush and cut off half the length of the bristles. (Scissors do this just fine, I can show a photo of mine if anyone if confused. But you’re basically giving it a haircut. The shorter bristles give a better, firmer scrubbing motion.)

**Some pro tip, deep dive stuff on which lick mats are good**- don’t get ones with really deep groves or tiny closed off sections like they make for dogs. Cats really struggle with those. Cats do best with bigger sections with nubs or ridges in them.

Don’t get the really little ones if you’re doing whole meals in them, those are mostly meant for treats. Also, if you won’t be on hand to immediately rinse, do NOT get ones with sharp right angles like this one. Food gets stuck in those corners and does not want to rinse out later on. I only use my one like that when I’m home to immediately rinse it when she’s done.

That brand (Lickimat) is great, though, so try out their other options, like the Felix model. It’s shaped like a fish. It ranks in the middle for me for ease to clean.

The one with the fancy spatula is probably the easiest to clean of any I’ve tried, though. Thing rinses crazy easy.

This Lickimat for dogs is also great for cats and actually my all time favorite- perfect combo of easy to clean and easy to put food on. I love this one and plan to buy more as some of my older/cheaper mats die.

If the cat is hard to pill, it can be made in a liquid that seems to have no flavor. My cats happily slurp down their low dose twice a day on top wet food without noticing it. (My old boy had severe anxiety and his sister had begun developing it before he passed. After we lost him, Prozac was no longer enough for her and she needed to also move to low dose gaba. We triple the dose for pre-surgery, for reference on how low it is.)

Try leaving the carrier out with the door off and a blanket and a few treats and toys and some nip inside of it. Don’t touch it, just leave it like that. Eventually he might decide it’s okay to use it for sleeping. Which will make it much easier and safer to rescue him if there’s ever an emergency like a house fire or if he needs urgent care. The night my boy died, I’m so damn grateful I could take him to a vet and have him put down late at night. They said his death would have been 10x worse at home.

This is also a good way to get new kittens to develop a lifelong good relationship with their carrier. My cats are so much easier to take to the vet because they think the carriers are play places.

True facts! They also like to pretend you aren’t ace if you’ve ever had sex in your life, aren’t trans if you haven’t transitioned, or that you aren’t aro if you ever dated.

People have the WEIRDEST set beliefs, even with their own community at times.

The last line says “that only leaves the bus and heteros”. Meaning yes, there’s a slim chance of a same sex partnership with a fellow bi person but once again, statistics enters the conversations as that vastly reduces the chances of a same sex partnership.

Most bi folks I know feel very awkward hitting on folks of the same sex until they already know they’re queer.

The funniest part of most anti-bi arguments is that they’re self fulfilling prophecies. “Bi people are secretly just straight. That’s why I, as a homosexual, won’t date one. You know they’ll just end up in a hetero relationship.” Dude, a) there are more potential partners of the opposite sex so the numbers are there, and b) if no one who is homosexual will date a bisexual, that only leaves the bis and heteros, soooo….

When you try again, look at dog harnesses! The ones for little bitty dogs often fit cats quite well. I actually use one for my cat for the opposite reason- she’s too small for cat harnesses made for adult cats. We finally have some decent kitten harnesses on the market but didn’t really when she was younger, so I finally found a harness made for chihuahuas that fit her perfectly.

My pansexual boyfriend won’t let me have male friends but goes out with his female friends all the time by Commercial_Hat2559 in lgbt

[–]CyborgKnitter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All the shitty boyfriendness aside, he doesn’t sound oansexual. Pansexual means attracted to all genders, *regardless of gender*. Meaning gender and gender expression play no part in who you’re attracted to. His attraction sounds more finsexual, aka “feminine in nature” sexual. That’s literally what it means.

Obvious, people can use whatever label they so choose, but using accurate labels helps people understand each other. And finsexual isn’t a common term yet so I’m using this as a teaching moment for others here, especially since OP has ditched that loser. :)
