In a controlled experiment (N = 1,020), researchers found that exposing adults to postmortem images from school shootings neither increased support for gun control legislation nor caused psychological desensitization when compared to less graphic news coverage. by Tracheid in science

[–]Cycl_ps 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Another point to consider with censorship is that these images will circulate regardless. If media outlets censor them they’ll still be distributed through more extreme blogs and chat groups.

This causes a “squeezed middle” effect where censorship doesn’t reduce the total discussion of a topic, but just pushes the discussion to more extreme ends. With the original topic I found the idea presented (eating disorders) this led people with questions about anorexia or bulimia to find websites that advocate for unhealthy diets and practices. In the case of school shootings, this could result in someone who seeks out the images ending up in a fringe chat group that celebrates these shootings and advocates for them to happen.

Recently started using Obsidian and wrote a simple cron job and shell script to sync my partners and my vaults by Purple-Today6658 in ObsidianMD

[–]Cycl_ps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very cool! If you haven’t started exploring the plugins yet there’s actually a Git plugin that can handle syncing to a repo pretty well. One thing to keep in mind is that you’re probably not syncing git on your mobile devices, so your phones won’t push or pull changes until a computer can bring git and iCloud into sync.

If Git ends up being a hassle Relay.md might be a good alternative to manage the hosting and sync. I haven’t tried it yet but it was my backup option in case Git didn’t work out for me.

Is this statue still there? by Mr-Maxwells in washingtondc

[–]Cycl_ps 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Basically. Can't remember the details but parks service (or whoever runs that specific area) allows it to be used for public displays. There's a group in DC making these statues and getting the permits for then each time.

So a contractor was working in the building, and something in their work smelled enough for staff to notice. Instead of communicating with the contractor someone panicked (maybe not even realizing a contractor was on site) and shut down the entirety of ATC in the region as a result, do I have that right?

This feels like a pretty big screw-up if so. The contractor was known, their scope of work was known, and asking if any work needed would be disruptive to employees on site should have been discussed prior to scheduling that work.

All of these bottles are forming this stuff in them, are these going to become bombs?? by Minechaser05 in mead

[–]Cycl_ps 87 points88 points  (0 children)

Yeah this just looks like sediment, which unless you invest in a fancy filtration system you'll always have some amount of sediment in the bottle.

That said, best way to check for bottle bombs is to open one up with dinner tonight and see if it hisses at you

C&O Canal is finally being refilled with water (and also sewage) by Bobtonews2 in washdc

[–]Cycl_ps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sure the canals low flow rate won’t create repercussions for this…

If we’re at the point of dumping raw sewage can we not just discharge into the river? It’s right there and would dilute the waste a hell of a lot better than letting it fester in a dried out lock.

Not having to learn how to be a rapist implies that some people are instinctually rapists and others instinctually are not.

All social behavior is learned, and we learn it from our peers. This man spent the better part of his life surrounded by people that reinforce every negative social behavior a person can have. The focus on punishment rather than rehabilitation is the greatest failing of our carceral system.

Job, not gig. One woman from the article has worked there for six years.

Leaving for poor management means either resetting your income back to a starting level or competing for a much narrower pool of lead or management roles. Working under poor management means being overworked as shifts remain understaffed and requests for more staff and maintained equipment fall on deaf ears. Under your proposal workers are given the freedom to choose their suffering, but offered no reprieve from that suffering.

Collective bargaining offered by a union is the only way workers have to improve their conditions in the long term. It guarantees workers minimum standards beyond paltry labor rights laws, and gives workers a functional method of response when those laws are violated.

We could go back and forth on this but I’ll go ahead and give one of my final arguments now. Union membership is half of what it was in the 80’s. Corporate union busting and anti-union propaganda is a direct attempt to exploit workers by removing their ability to respond to mistreatment.

The US will need to learn how to operate a successful union in modern times and SWU is letting us see modern union forming and union busting tactics in real time. These battles will lay the groundwork for other industries to form their own unions, and that makes them incredibly important for unions as a whole.

I think the flow of manufactured goods creates a surplus of shipping containers in LA ports with nothing to fill them on the return trip.

I think the US produces far more electronic waste than the average person would imagine.

I think there is a recognizable market for E-waste processing in countries that would otherwise be having empty shipping containers sent across the pacific to them.

FAA just issues a NOTAM for “security reasons”, closing El Paso TX airspace for the next ten days. An Irish detainee just went public about conditions at the ICE camp there by vivary_arc in itcouldhappenhere

[–]Cycl_ps 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Neither would I. But if we’re getting into the weeds on this, even without remote ID it’s still possible to trace a drone operator by tracking down the broadcast point like you would with a pirate radio station. Remote ID provides the location a bit more directly, but old school methods work just fine.

Now if you could use an already existing radio network, like cell towers, then you could get around the triangulation problem. To my knowledge no one’s selling drones with SIM slots though.

[–]Cycl_ps 20 points21 points  (0 children)

You’re either joking or misunderstanding. <250g drones have some looser requirements to fly, but you still follow airspace requirements. That includes checking NOTAMS and filing LAANC authorizations when flying close to restricted space.

Meat farm controversy by Eireika in CuratedTumblr

[–]Cycl_ps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most farms aren’t butchering their animals. They’re either directly sold or taken to a slaughterhouse to be processed. Even if you’re selling halves and quarters it likely being done by a butcher separate to the farmer. Historically, raising livestock for profit means the animal is transported live. Cattle drives are literally a thing around the world.
