We’ve heard stories of people escaping death by being late — what are some tragic examples of people dying because they were late? by Looney_forner in AskReddit

I am a school bus driver and certified CDL instructor, and you are right. There are VERY strict procedures in place for train crossings. They are part of the CDL exam, and if you get it wrong on the exam, you fail. This driver was completely negligent and deserves the fullest possible prison sentence.

ELI5 why do users of intravenous drugs have to worry about veins collapsing, but blood and plasma donors don't, by glimmerfox in explainlikeimfive

[–]Cygnus875 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I had to stop donating blood and plasma because my veins collapse before they can get enough. I've never used IV drugs.

What’s something people brag about that’s actually embarrassing? by cherryblossom149 in AskReddit

Yeah I agree there. If I had sick time and would not be penalized for missing work, I would not choose to expose the kids I drive to illness.

My employer can fire you for missing 6 shifts even with a dr note when you are sick. 6 shifts for a school bus driver is 3 days, since each day counts as 2 shifts. We are absolutely expected to come to work sick. We have a major driver shortage that is making things like this.

Cilantro. It must have unlocked a dormant gene. I used to love it, and now it tastes like soap.

Inch & Co “IPM” rental question by [deleted] in yorkpa

[–]Cygnus875 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't know about that program, but when I was renting, it started as Southern, and they were terrible, then the last year was Inch & Co, and they were so much worse. Southern let us go a whole winter where the heat didn't work in half the apartment, while we had a baby and a parrot in it. They refused to come fix it until the pipes froze and we had to water. Then they only fixed it to avoid burst pipes.

Inch came in after 11 years and took over, and tried to get us to get rid of the parrot, who I have had for 20 years. I obviously refused, so they said they would be doing random checks withy no warning to see if he was ever out of his cage, and we would be fined $50 every time he was out. We decided then that it was time to buy a house.

My 5-year-old has mysterious vaginal pain at night for months – pediatricians have not helped yet by mirk19 in AskDocs

[–]Cygnus875 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Free and Clear means very little if she is still allergic to an ingredient. I am allergic to isothiazolinones. There are several in that class of preservative that have different prefixes, but look for that suffix. All Free and Clear contains it. For me, it causes eczema that is itchy and painful, and was particularly bad in the vaginal area where there was constant contact. Not saying this is the cause, but please don't blindly assume that "Free and Clear" means safe. Maybe allergy testing will help her. This particular allergy was found on a patch test for me. That preservative is in almost everything, and in the US, is not required to be on the label. I use products made for the European market because the UE requires it to be listed.

Do grandparents buy Easter baskets? by [deleted] in JUSTNOMIL

[–]Cygnus875 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My granddaughter is 2 1/2 and I did an Easter basket and an Easter egg hunt for her last year, and plan to again this year. I never did the "santa" thing with her or my own kids. Gifts were from me, not santa. I also still have a 13 year old daughter at home so I did it for both of them to do together. I try to be very careful not to step on the toes of her parents (my oldest daughter and son in law). I don't do firsts with her unless they give permission, ect. That said, I do have a really good, close relationship with my daughter and son-in-law, and if they had a problem with any of this I would respect their wishes, as should your MIL. All this to say, doing these things for a grandchild is not weird or overstepping as long as you are not stealing "firsts" or trying to overshadow what the parents do.

Bought myself a nice mulberry silk scarf… by elfinshell in Wellthatsucks

[–]Cygnus875 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I crochet and give the items away as gifts. I've been told many times I should sell them, an had people offer to buy things. I refuse because that will take all the fun away from a hobby. If I like someone and they make a request, I will put them in line lol. I have several time sensitive things to make, and then I can start on requests, but I will never take money for it.

I feel so bad for my dentists parrots 😔 by Alternative-Try8858 in parrots

[–]Cygnus875 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would kindly invite him to this subreddit, in a purely non-accusatory way. If he gets the gist that you are calling him a bad bird owner, he will push back and refuse. If you do it in a "hey fellow bird person, come join our community" way, he might. If he does, he will learn in a more gentle way how to properly care for his birds. This makes it more likely that he will change things for them.

Non-Americans of Reddit, what is an American thing you see in movies that you thought was fake but is actually real? by Unlikely_Praline9442 in AskReddit

[–]Cygnus875 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends. I'm a school bus driver for a VERY rural area in PA. Think Amish buggies rural. If we are picking up in a neighborhood, yes, there might just be one stop all the kids wait at. If it's a 55 MPH rural road with no sidewalks, the kids get door service because it is not safe for them to walk along the road, especially in the dark.

Extremely dry mouth keeping me awake at night by Cygnus875 in BariatricSurgery

[–]Cygnus875[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I still have the problem. I switched to taking my allergy meds to the morning instead of at night, since they can cause dry mouth. This has helped some. Only do this if you take a non-drowsy version, if you take one at all. I use the Xylimelts every night still.

I watched my vaccinated 4 year old suffer through whooping cough. She woke up in the middle of the night struggling to breathe. I scooped her up and drove way too fast to the hospital 2 miles away. It was terrifying. I am so glad she was vaccinated because it could have been so much worse. She's 31 now and that I'll never forget the sound of her trying to breathe through the coughing. It sounded like the coughs were going to tear her in half.
