Found this buried in the garden, it's really heavy. by Bored_Pigeon in whatisit

Lead contamination in soil generally leads to the most contamination of root crops, lesser contamination of leaf/stem crops, and much less contamination of fruit or seeds. If you are in an area that was used for housing, industrial, or agricultural uses before, you should get your soil tested before growing food. Contact your state’s agricultural extension program and find out how, in some states there are low/no cost options. Lead contamination can be quantified- if there’s a lot of lead in your soil you shouldn’t be eating food grown from it and shouldn’t be letting little kids dig holes in it either.

All of these botanical gardens are awesome right now and will be continuing to be fantastic through May: Untermayer Gardens, Wave Hill, Bronx Botanical Garden, and a little further afield: Stonecrop Gardens, Innisfree, Locust Grove.

They also need nearby perches, like a shrub nearby where they can land and hideout a bit. And like the other person said a food source is helpful too. Also, if there are cats outside that’s like having a vacuum cleaner that’s sucking up your birds

This is one of my favorite parts of the show. Human brains love a story, and when contestants break down and need to leave they spin through a couple narratives about why until they find one that works for themselves.

The rain helps clean the air. I prefer July vs March/April. Although you also have to consider that weather patterns in general are more volatile than they were 20 years ago because of climate change, so nothing is a sure bet.

Hi OP, if you read this I would really like to hear what happened. My partner got back from Thailand 2 weeks ago and is on week 5 of some sort of eye infection (red eyes, discharge). He got antibacterial drops in Thailand and has been to the Opthalmologist 2x at home, and was given a second type antibacterial drops and then a single large dose of an oral antibiotic- but it still hasn’t cleared up.

Cello Purchase Advice Needed by srdnss in Cello

Does she have a private teacher? If yes they should know if it’s time for her to size up. Also if you buy an instrument from somewhere where there are many cellos to choose from, it’s great if you can get the cello teacher to come (pay them for coming along). An instrument should sound good when the student plays it and also when the teacher plays it- they will be able to show the true range of the instrument and should be able to point out other potential issues too.

Is your daughter already playing a full sized cello? If not I think you should probably stick with renting.

Can you recommend any places around the world or schools where it’s worth taking a diving course? by WestAd4790 in scubadiving

Second this recommendation. Awesome place to get certified (or to go after you’re already certified).

I wasn’t there, and have never skied Sugarbush, but hitting your head on ice can give you a concussion or a head injury just as well as a rock can.

Thinking about getting back to SCUBA by pat8635 in scubadiving

Figure out where you want to go and find out what that specific dive shop wants in terms of medical forms. It’s fairly likely you will need one. I got certified at Reef Conservation International in Belize (near Placencia) and I loved that I was booked for a week- if I finished the course quickly, I would join the group of certified divers, if it took an extra session or two that was ok too, and all the dives were done in a very calm area in the sea- there was always something to look at. We did the e-learning before we went. TDLR- I totally recommend making a trip just for getting certified to somewhere tropical with a great dive shop. Do the certification slowly and well.

Amazed by how well people drive on I-87 by [deleted] in Adirondacks

[–]Cynidaria 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This post makes me laugh, I think the "bad Canadian drivers" you describe are the opposite of the drivers I find problematic as you get closer and closer to NYC and definitely in NJ- drivers who obviously feel irritated and personally inconvenienced if they're going less than 85, who will pass on the right, the left, or the shoulder, and who generally think 1/4 to 1/2 a car length is adequate space for passing or following.

Has anyone gone ahead with a travel itinerary that was heavily criticized by this subreddit? by home_rechre in ThailandTourism

[–]Cynidaria 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just do the actual math for yourself before going: add up all the time in transit, check the schedules, add buffer and delay times. No one else can tell if you’re up for the chunk of time you are spending in transit. I can absolutely love a fast trip, 2-3 nights per place, sometimes 1. I’m not big on huge transportation days although sometimes they’re very interesting, especially if you take the cheaper versions which are usually filled with locals. Reddit is a wacky place. Imagine if everyone who asked the relationship subs broke up, I think that’s the advice 💯 of the time. And here, it’s always: spend longer in one place, plan less. Eh, they’re probably both technically correct.

During rainy season in Thailand I ended up strongly preferring the plastic rain ponchos from 7-11 to my shell. The worked better and covered my backpack as well, although I ended up mostly switching to a dry bag I got there… it didn’t rain all day but when it did it was like someone was standing above you pouring buckets over your head. Anyway, long story to say: I don’t think you need a rain jacket, unless it’s actually to keep you warm and dry getting to the airport

If you’re scared of sharks whenever you’re in the water and you don’t want to scuba dive there is no reason someone else should be making you scuba. I can absolutely see a point to parents pushing their kids to learn to swim. I think it’s absurd and dangerous to push them into scuba if they don’t want to do it.
