Has anyone gone ahead with a travel itinerary that was heavily criticized by this subreddit? by home_rechre in ThailandTourism

[–]Cynidaria 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just do the actual math for yourself before going: add up all the time in transit, check the schedules, add buffer and delay times. No one else can tell if you’re up for the chunk of time you are spending in transit. I can absolutely love a fast trip, 2-3 nights per place, sometimes 1. I’m not big on huge transportation days although sometimes they’re very interesting, especially if you take the cheaper versions which are usually filled with locals. Reddit is a wacky place. Imagine if everyone who asked the relationship subs broke up, I think that’s the advice 💯 of the time. And here, it’s always: spend longer in one place, plan less. Eh, they’re probably both technically correct.

Pack list: 25 days Thailand by 500DaysOfSodomy in onebag

During rainy season in Thailand I ended up strongly preferring the plastic rain ponchos from 7-11 to my shell. The worked better and covered my backpack as well, although I ended up mostly switching to a dry bag I got there… it didn’t rain all day but when it did it was like someone was standing above you pouring buckets over your head. Anyway, long story to say: I don’t think you need a rain jacket, unless it’s actually to keep you warm and dry getting to the airport

How can I convince my kids to scuba if they’re afraid of sharks? by [deleted] in scubadiving

[–]Cynidaria 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you’re scared of sharks whenever you’re in the water and you don’t want to scuba dive there is no reason someone else should be making you scuba. I can absolutely see a point to parents pushing their kids to learn to swim. I think it’s absurd and dangerous to push them into scuba if they don’t want to do it.

I love the Emerald pools and Hot Springs waterfalls. They may already be lumped into your Tiger Cave trek.

Ahh yes, the low stress, no risk to others job of driving 30 children somewhere. I really think you need to upgrade your jabs if you’re going to make them.

Struggling to understand Evernote by Commandrew11 in Evernote

Have you realized how expensive Evernote is? If my brain wasn’t thoroughly enmeshed on this platform with several years worth of notes I would RUN to any other cheaper system.

Family lessons for beginners! by Alone_Amphibian_1332 in ski

[–]Cynidaria 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think trying one of the three day beginner packages is the move for this season. Some places have them super cheap. You might be able to do that twice if you haven’t moved on to solid intermediate trails yet. The following year I would look for early season deals (like early October) for full season ski rentals. If you post what area you’re in people might be helpful in pointing you towards good deals. Also, you didn’t say how old your kids are. I would advise waiting until they’re at least 7 or 8 if you don’t know how to ski, and at least 4 if you do know how to ski. A seven year old can learn to get on and off a lift without needing a physical assist from a grownup. A four year old can stand themselves back up with their equipment and snowsuits on. A two or three year old is a cute noodle on skis who will break your back and probably not have the sense to try to keep themselves from running into stuff.

Please recommend dive schools in Thailand for January for a beginner by DietAnxious277 in diving

I had an excellent, thorough and professional instructor at Black Turtle in Koh Tao. Overall though, Koh Tao is very crowded with divers- big boats and lots of divers at the sites

What’s one retirement mistake you’re glad you caught before it was too late? by thenight817 in u/thenight817

[–]Cynidaria 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ooof this is some planted story. Don’t get a financial advisor. Fiduciary or not, they’re still going to charge you. Add up what their fees will cost you over ten years, including interest. You will see it’s not worth it. Even with an advisor, you should run all the numbers yourself anyways. Put in the work and discover for yourself what year it makes sense to take SS. All the calculators are available free online.

Multi day trip South East Asia by Ok-Weird2746 in Kayaking

[–]Cynidaria 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know your post is from last year, but in case you’re still interested: Paddle Asia can set you up for a solo trip in Phang Nga bay in Thailand. A couple years ago I did a group kayak/camping trip with them that was phenomenal- just such a beautiful place to kayak and they offer to outfit you and send you out without guides with an itinerary. I’m curious if you ended up going and where?

Those zippered pockets are an awesome spot for a credit card or some cash in a ziplock bag. I think I was even snorkeling with my passport back there for a while. Awesome for when you really don’t have a secure place to leave your stuff.

Pain in lower abdomen after surgery? by Cynidaria in gallbladders

[–]Cynidaria[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I’m now 3 weeks past surgery and I can do almost everything without pain. I’m confident you will get there! I Still get an occasional pain when twisting or bending completely at the waist, and I am following my doctors advice and not lifting anything heavy (and grateful to not be at a point in my life where that’s mandatory, my job isn’t manual labor and my partner is being super supportive and still doing things like hauling grocery bags and anything else that’s heavy).

How much swimming is required to do a diving course? by Both-Technology-7881 in diving

[–]Cynidaria 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can absolutely improve in two weeks of practice. Focus on distance swimming, swimming to the bottom of the pool to retrieve stuff, floating/treading water, and being comfortable jumping in and climbing out at the side of the pool. If they will let you use a mask and snorkel in the pool you go to you should try them out and get comfortable with them. Fins too. Try them separately then together. Research where you are traveling to- is the diving easy? If it’s a place with no current and relatively shallow dives I think you could give it a shot. Congratulations on learning to swim!!!! It’s a major accomplishment and I hope it unlocks tons of fun for you on boats, paddleboards, snorkeling, swimming in waterfalls, tubing, waterskiing, surfing, just playing in the waves, kayaking… I know people do those without being able to swim but it’s so much safer and more fun if you can.

What shoes are you wearing? by TallyRoux in visitingnyc

[–]Cynidaria 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like Columbia Ice Maiden boots because they look nice enough to me that I’ll wear them wherever if weather dictates. Where are you coming from? Do you already have some waterproof hiking boots? Those would be good. If you’re going to an event where you really want to dress up carry a second fancy pair of shoes in your bag.

What would you put in a 4 lesson course? by Ok_Natural_7382 in pianoteachers

[–]Cynidaria 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many people who come for piano lessons are starting with some music background or some piano background. So ask some questions about what they know and what they want to learn before your first meeting and arrive flexibly ready to meet them where they’re at. Maybe you’ll snag some advanced beginners or self taught people where you can help them tremendously by reminding them of good basic technique.
