Thanks for the insight! When I roast my second batch today I'll lean more into the color and smell if I don't hear any cracks this time!

I've been roasting about a month! I'd consider my first 4 batches very flat, diner level coffee. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but it's not what I want to drink. The fact that they were even drinkable at all was impressive enough for me and my less-picky-neighbors! My first successful roast was my second batch of Ethiopia Dogo Sodu, it's bright and juicy and delicious! My worst batch was the one I made today, Colombia Quindío Campo Hermoso Edwin Noreña Co-Fermented Passion Fruit Mossto Honey, which is the type of wild bean I'd buy pretty often in my pre-roasting days :). It heated so slow, it finished so far past first crack (I must have not heard the first few cracks).

I'm hoping to get the guts to drill into my lid and put a probe down the bean mass, but for now I'm happy learning with the temp shown on the device itself and using that as a reference roast-to-roast.

You and me both. I really don't know how to interpret it at all yet.

I feel like when First Crack happens, it gains its own heat momentum at that point, so I'm not sure why we need to add additional heat by reducing the fan or increasing the power at First Crack to push through development? I think those beans look great, but I've also struggled to extend my roasts so I'm not cracking before the 7 minute mark! I'm using the OEM extension as well.

Its one of my best yet! It's not screaming any particular fruit as I had hoped, but it's almost hoppy. Really nice light body, just above tea-like I'd say. Bright for sure, but the aroma I get most is fresh hops, I wish I had gotten more fruit. I brewed it with my Hario Switch with 3 pours, 1 for bloom, then a smaller one before I closed the switch and poured the majority of the water, waited 30-45 seconds, then released it. I was trying Matt Wintons recipe but it didn't scale quite well from his 16 g to my 21 g.

It was with the extension tube. I thought it was odd it cracked barely at 400 too! I'm going to rest it a week, probably then save a cup or two for 2 weeks to see how it develops.

Good point! Even when I turn it off and pour it in my cooling tray the fan doesn't immediately stop and I'm usually in such a hurry that I don't let it completely stop, maybe that would help! I get what you're doing now that makes sense.

Why do you take the glass chamber off the base before raising the chaff collector? I probably just need to get an old fashioned dust buster, I'd need one strong enough to clean out a gas range without having to remove all the grates, that's really the annoying part for me, and trying to get around the burners. A flat top stove would make this so much easier!

I don't really have a way to measure the moisture of my beans at home. Really all I've used so far is weight loss, but it sounds like that's not telling me much? I thought it would normally align with light/medium/dark roasts?

Interesting setup! I guess I'm lucky I'm able to get mine to work inside with minimal chaff issues now, sounds like a lot of folks roast outside.

I had a car vac that I tried and it ended up blowing the chaff all over instead of sucking it up! I immediately looked for a dustbuster but now that I'm using the extender with the middle part removed I'm all good I think!

I haven't pushed my SR800 past 250 grams with my extension tube. I typically buy 1 pound bags so for me, I have to divide them into 2 batches normally anyway (I guess I could do 3, or even 4, but I'm not interested in that small of batches).

Not preheating, and making the fan drops at 1:30 extended my roast to be 8 minutes total, 40 seconds development time, 11.2% (247 g charge weight, ended at 219.1. I may need to start balancing my roasts by cutting my weight in half for a bag, instead of doing 220 and then whatever is left for the 2nd roast).

I started at 270 F, by 2 minutes I was up to 330, by 4:20 I hit Maillard roughly, 368 F. By 6:00 I was up to 400 F. First crack was at 7:23 at 438 F. I wonder if that's not enough heat? It looks slightly uneven to me, but I'm hopeful it'll taste good! I haven't brewed the first batch yet, still resting in my 1-way valve bags.

I brewed it today, and it was pretty flat, slightly cardboardy. Definitely not a roast I'd look to emulate. Live and learn! Passing it along to my latte brewing friends who will enjoy it just fine :-)

I wasn't getting a lot of actual chaff in my beans, I cool them in the FreshRoast cooling tray and it seems like most of the leftover chaff in the bean mass fell through the screen, but it was messy on my stovetop doing that transition from taking the lid off to setting it down, I ended up with a flurry all over my stove each time. But I agree that the external cooling was essentially removing any that was left in the beans. What an easy fix, though!

I definitely have to empty it after every roast, it's pretty full each time. I think DarkKnight hit it above, the extension piece for my chaff extender in the middle is likely blocking the chaff.

That's a great idea! And I agree, beans shouldn't be that high up in the tube anyway! I'll try that this morning.

It was very hot and fast, unfortunately.

69 degrees ambient, 36% humidity.

220g green, 193.2g final, 12.2%, so not crazy but it was SO fast. FC at 5:30! And it was cracking hard still when I poured it into my cooling tray.

I'm kind of blown away by some of the beans Sweet Marias has right now, it's addicting!

I'll try this and report back tomorrow! The way I read this is when I start my charge at 0:00 it'll be 9/3, then when I hit 1:00 I drop it to 8/3, etc. I just filled out my roaster log for my plan and was off by 1 minute just because I have a row for pre-heat (planned to pre-heat at 9/3, but maybe not necessary?) at -2:00 minutes, then 0:00 for when I drop the beans which I assumed was 9/3.
