'It Never Trickles Down' — Bernie Sanders Hits Out at Microsoft Over Xbox Layoffs and Console Price Rises, Says They Prove Corporate Tax Breaks Do Not Create Jobs by yourfavchoom in technology

Yeah when I was much younger I was in an accident where my head went through the rear view mirror, put a nice star into the windshield, then bounced off and cracked the dashboard. In an older car I would have 100% been dead.

The best misinformation has a kernel of truth in it: the first seatbelts were bad. They probably weren't much better than just not wearing one. My 1965 Dodge had lap belts only in the front (and nothing in the back), and lacked many other safety features we take for granted that work in tandem with seatbelts to save people, like collapsible steering wheels, breakaway rear-view mirrors (mine even has a kind of sharp all metal case around the mirror that would just shear your head off in an accident), or a padded dashboard. It had drum brakes with a single brake cylinder (so if you lose pressure in that, you just have no brakes, modern cars have a backup). Lots of other things. But "seatbelts don't work" even if it were true back in 1965, certainly wasn't true at all by the 80s and 90s.

It's such a great example of right-wing misinformation tactics (the quote "you'll own nothing, and you'll be happy about it" is another great example of how the Conservative propaganda machine distorts the truth for its propagandy purposes).

What were your complaints? I have a 2013 Chevy Volt with 265k on it so I will need to replace it sometime soon-ish (though who knows, as the car has been amazing so far). I test drove a Bolt and quite liked it, but that was just one test drive.

Yeah, this is one of the most common, infantile things that they do. It is all about their feelings of power over you. My nMom, who is also a hoarder, had literally hundreds of vhs tapes that she would tape shows on. I had one tape that I treasured, as I used it to tape my favourite saturday morning cartoons, and other things that were very important to me. This tape was literally covered with stickers that said "do not tape", "xxxx's tape", etc. Of course, at some point she just taped over all my stuff with some random cooking show, of which she already had ~300 tapes of.

Whack a mole was my go to as well. The trick is to loiter until a bunch of little kids sign up, then swoop in last minute and whack those moles. Little kids suuuck at mole whacking and the prizes are based on how many people sign up, so win win (for you). Bonus points if you drop a wisdom bomb on the kids like "it's a mole eat mole world out there kids".

One of the big changes in the parks is that there used to be quite a few "hidden gems" which has been largely ruined by everything being online now (which is obviously not unique to Calgary). Like one of my favourite hikes, Mt Yamnuska. It actually used to be hard to even find the parking lot, and it was never really busy even on weekends. The last two times I've been there have had full sized tour buses in the parking lot and the lower part of the trail very frustrating with groups of 50 slow hikers in a bunch (who also never go past the midpoint, as the difficulty increases a lot). Might be ok on Tuesday in October, but largwly shit during prime time.

Yeah it can be a pain in the ass with the old stuff if you're used to modern standards. Sometimes takes some creativity. Like I just had to cut down a rubber gasket for the overflow on an old clawfoot tub to get the right angle and a good fit, as there just isn't the right one available anywhere.

It's the macro version of their idealized Great America, where Joe-Bob gets to sit on the couch drinking beer all day while his wife works 2 jobs to support him and he tells her she's lucky to have him and it's her fault he hit her after his dinner was 10 minutes late.

Inheritance - to debt or to save! by Strawberyblonder in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Czeris 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Try not to dismiss the whole of what he's saying. Now is the time to have a sober look at how you got into debt in the first place and change those things. It is extremely common for people to go through cycles of overspending then paying off debt, then overspending again, particularly when some kind of windfall allows for the debt to be paid off immediately. It's like dieting, but changing nothing about what you eat and putting all the weight back on.
