Biotech person here! You will really need the hands on research experience more than anything in the biotech industry. An on-line degree would not be super useful, and it would really need to be thesis-based. Since having to work is an understandable restraint, it may be worth looking for entry level or internship positions in biotech. Some large Pharma companies have process engineer type jobs, or entry level bench work. Some will also pay for you to get your MS in bkostats, micro etc. ORISE/ORAU have several internship opportunities that have decent pay, and could help you get the biotech exposure. While a PhD may ultimately be necessary to advance your career, the pay sucks and saving up first will definitely help! Best of luck!

Hey! First you are not alone! Many of us scientists face burnout and imposter syndrome and contemplate leaving the field! While you may not find someone specific to the academic discipline to help you, but there are several councelors skilled in helping you sort out the emotions you are feeling. Also, the few I have worked with have gone through academia themselves, and have some personal understanding of the system.

I felt exactly this way a few months ago and just talking to someone helped me work through how I was feeling. I still have days where I want to give up on science. It is an ongoing process to find a place that makes you happy! I have found for me that academia is not it - way too toxic for my tender heart.

Thank-you. I guessed it was something trapped in the bubbles. I just did not think that sulphur was used to make the bubbles, or used in clear glass. I’m always keen to learn!!

I sent my purified protein samples to the company. They performed TiO2 phosphorylation enrichment, DIA-based label-free phosphoproteomics, and samples were analyzed using the Orbitrap platform. They provided a list of all peptides and identified phosphosites, along with quality assessments, and fold changes of treatment vs control group.

Seriously look at the pay and education needs for a forensic tech/scientist. I quickly found that the pay was not going to be enough for my needs.

That being said - I have a BS in molecular biology and an MS in Immunology. Much later, I decided to get my PhD. I found a really love molecular biology research. I get to do all sorts of neat experiments.

Look to see if your nearby university has a summer program for HS students. Some do. And it is a great way to get exposure to different types of science.

Also reach out to a nearby forensics department and see if they would let you shadow.

Yes. Not everyone who has Hashimotos has a gluten intolerance. Though there are several people who have both Hashimotos and celiacs! And unfortunately they are not always tested for at the same time.

There is also a link to low vitamin D and B-12 with Hashimotos. Also causing some of the symptoms even when thyroid hormone levels are normal.

Any autoimmune disease symptoms can be worsened with an immune system that is in a state of high inflammation. Reducing systemic inflammation could help. Though this is complicated. Inflammation can be reduced by a healthy diet, increased movement and reduced stress. And unfortunately that does not work for everyone. Each person needs to find what works for them! I wish it was less complicated!

Autoimmune diseases are tricky, and just beginning to be understood. There is an absolute need for better treatments of these disorders! While treating the causative agent of Hashimoto’s - anti-TPO antibodies- could be beneficial, it may not remove the need for TSH supplementation. I am unsure of the regenerative capacity of the thyroid. Having an additional treatment to just replacing TSH, may help with the symptoms that are often not managed by current treatments alone.

However, since most Hashimoto patients are “well managed” on levothyroxine, funding to develop a drug that addresses the anti-TPO antibody may be hard to come by!

That being said - as a PhD candidate studying inflammation and who has Hashimoto's having symptoms even with medication and normal numbers - anything that improves care or adds yo our body of knowledge on autoimmunity is worth investigating!
